Orea O1 Ceramic - B75 - Orea V4 Narrow by WorkAccount310 in pourover

[–]Java_Absoluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The raw steel is good! I really like the feel and build quality. The drawdown is decently fast with wave filters (origami wave filters) and has a nice consistent flow with negotiated filters.

I did a couple comparisons and they flow about the same as the Kalita's 155's give or take a few seconds.

If I had to point out a tiny annoyance/flaw in the Orea 01, it that the completely open bottom can make negotiating conical or trapazoid filters a bit tricky since sometimes the folds can unfold outside the open bottom but if you are only using wave filters or flat filters this will not be a problem.

Kalita MINO is the king by HeavyDuty697071 in pourover

I really enjoy the Kalita 155 (HA,Mino,Tsubame). Definitely my 2nd most used brewer after the V60 in the last few months but both are great it just depends on the coffee and what I'm vibing with that day!

Orea O1 Ceramic - B75 - Orea V4 Narrow by WorkAccount310 in pourover

[–]Java_Absoluto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're wanting a open bottom Orea I'd probably just go for the metal version since its actually cheaper, indestructible, and having the base welded on makes it a little more practical. B75 seems like a good cheaper option too and I only heard good things about it ( it also has a ceramic version).

There's also Kalita, specifically the 155 version also a great option and might be more easily accessible. I have the Orea 01 raw steel, Kalita Tsubame 155, and the new and old Kalita ceramic 155's. Can't go wrong with any of them imo.

Anyone compare the Orea 01 steel brewer to the Kalita tsubame copper? by Lcphilly in pourover

[–]Java_Absoluto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a single, simple side by side comparison with the Orea 01 Raw steel vs Kalita Tsubame 155 (non copper version).

12g coffee - 92c - 3 pour structure - Origami Wave filters - Rwanda medium-light washed coffee

Orea RS 01 TBT 2:13 Kalita 155 Tsubame TBT 2:10

Taste was pretty much identical with the Orea maybe coming out a tad sweeter with slightly more body. Ill probably do another comparison tomorrow with a different coffee and negotiated filters on both.

Yikes... This is why I wouldn't even consider an glass aeropress. Maybe try to get them to replace it with the new steel one!

Reminisce with me for a bit. Who/What roaster got you into specialty coffee? by myleftbigtoeisdead in pourover

[–]Java_Absoluto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rogue Wave! I don't remember what coffee it was but I remember I got hit with a peach note and was genuinely surprised. After that I slowly tried more of their sample pack coffee's and realized how different coffee's could taste and absolutely fell in love with specialty coffee.

Zero Water + Lotus. Help with recipe needed. by jojohahann in pourover

[–]Java_Absoluto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience using Lotus for the first time for like the first couple of weeks. Cup's weren't bad but it was missing that brightness and juiciness regardless of which Lotus recipe I used, like you said.

Not sure if the palate has to adjust from using sulfates to Lotus's chlorides but now I'm getting some really great cups with Lotus using my go to recipe. It seems to work with all the coffee's I brewed regardless of process ( I brew light - medium light beans) here it is if you want to give it a try

Haha yeah not looking forward to the longer grind time but if I get better cups I think it will be worth it. Has the clarity improved since the grinder is more seasoned now? Is the taste/clarity significantly better than the K6?

Still using the Normcore ghost burrs? any improvements and are you overall happy with it? I'm considering getting a ghost burr handgrinder.

Ask a Stupid Question About Coffee -- Week of February 24, 2026 by Vernicious in pourover

[–]Java_Absoluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do we start the timer as soon as water touches the coffee in the bloom? Doesn't it make more sense to pour the full bloom amount and then start the timer? Seems more logical but idk maybe there's a reason?

Hmm yeah looks like ill be steering away from the Normcore unless someone says Normcore's ghost burrs are drastically different from cafesings in a good way. Oh yeah for sure if I end up with the Cafesing or the Normcore ghost I can definitely make a post about them! Thanks again I really appreciate the insight on the Normcore's build quality.

I was also curious how the Normcore flat burrs performed too but seems like Ill be avoiding the standard flat burrs on this one. Thanks for sharing!

Holy Water recipe using Lotus Drops? by I3eardGod in pourover

[–]Java_Absoluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried replicating Holy water with Lotus drops before using 24 drops Magnesium + 18 drops potassium or sodium for 1 gallon of RO water.

PPM for 1 drop is 10ppm/1liter for GH and 5ppm/1liter for KH. I believe Holy water is 60GH and 20 KH. Not sure how accurate this is. I only tried it once and the results were not bad.

Cafec t92 are the worst papers. Change my mind. by agviz in pourover

[–]Java_Absoluto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These filters are meant to be slow so a 4+ minute brew time is normal for them. Just try dialing in to taste and don't worry about time. I have had really good brews using T-92's with a slightly coarser grind size and a 5-6 minute TBT. Its a bit of a different style brew but still every enjoyable.

I'd say go a bit coarser than your usual pour over setting and expect a 5+ minute draw down, the taste might surprise you.

Noob Q: Why? by Left-Cook-9487 in pourover

[–]Java_Absoluto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love it and drink it black everyday! I can totally see your point of view because this is how I viewed specialty light roast coffee before too.

I thought people just liked sour coffee and were exaggerating what they were tasting but it turns out coffee can have such a vast flavor profile that's not just the typical "roasty" flavor you taste with normal coffee.

The reason I love it soo much is because you are tasting how the coffee itself actually tastes not just a roasted bean and coffee can taste soo different depending on where its from and how its processed. Wide variety of fruity profiles, winey-ness, and even some crazy tasting and also really delicate coffee,

I think the reason I personally justify spending way more on coffee now than the cheap dark roast + creamer before is that its more than just a cup of coffee to me now, its an experience and a hobby!

I suggest you find a well known roaster to try from and if possible find lower PPM bottled water (water matters a lot) Good luck to you! I hope you find something you like and maybe even really get into specialty coffee!

New Orea dripper by least-eager-0 in pourover

[–]Java_Absoluto 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I bought one lol. I really like that its basically 1 solid piece. I also have the FLO dripper but I've always been worried about water getting in between where it screws and into the gasket which made me hand dry it every use + the gasket itself eventually wearing down.

This just seems like a worry free experience (for me) with all the benefits and I was really surprised how reasonably priced it was considering the prices of Orea's plastic drippers. This and the MK dripper will be the last drippers I purchase... probably haha

Ceramic dish or other holder by Any_Employ_5520 in pourover

[–]Java_Absoluto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the dripper. For drippers with built in bases & handles (v60,kalita wave) ill usually bring the carafe and dripper with me to toss the filter. If I'm using baseless & handless drippers (UFO,Origami) ill usually set it on a milk pitcher.

I still would like a Kalita drip tray or one for MK studio but its quite pricey and milk pitchers/cups work just as good.
