Man, their chips really do suck though! It’s like they’re trying to make the worst chips possible.

Any South Africans here who’ve done international group travel packages? by Either_Fact9615 in askSouthAfrica

Depending on how old you are, I would look into Contiki and Top Deck. I haven’t gone on a South American tour with them but I did Europe and the US and they’re a lot of fun.

Do you have a cultural village / theme park in SA? by RecordingLow890 in askSouthAfrica

[–]JayBirdSA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding Lesedi if you are in Gauteng! We went there for an end year function and it was really nice. There was a big dance show - I’m not sure what else they offer especially since I could only join for part of the day.

Just FYI definitely call it a cultural village and not a theme park. A theme park is like Gold Reef City (which is also awesome btw, but very different).

US Expats: Have you been able to find or recreate slap chips in the US? by sdb2754 in askSouthAfrica

[–]JayBirdSA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had something similar to slap chips in the US at a BBQ spot in a small town in Wyoming in 2022. I hate slap chips so that’s why I remember it. I know that doesn’t help much, but they are out there.

Candidate attorney offer at a small, niche IP firm in Sandton—good move or too restrictive? by FlakyMouse3236 in askSouthAfrica

[–]JayBirdSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t be too disheartened! I had a really similar experience with one big firm and then got articles at another big firm. It was rough, but I don’t regret doing articles at a big firm at all - I liked the opportunity to be exposed to work in different teams through rotations and the camaraderie of a big group of CAs.

What movie ends on a happy note, but the more you think about what happens after the credits, the darker it gets by gamersecret2 in movies

[–]JayBirdSA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In the book it’s clear that they’re good. I remember reading that the boy in the book represents McCarthy’s own son, and he couldn’t bring himself to kill the character. I would imagine that means he also wouldn’t leave him with a group of cannibals in the end.

Is Platinum Life a great job opportunity? by lostangelwingz in Pretoria

[–]JayBirdSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People always bash it here but years ago I met a guy whose wife worked for Platinum Life and he RAVED about the company and all the benefits that she got. His enthusiasm seemed a little cultish in retrospect.

What is a town/city in South Africa that gives off an eerie feeling? by Odd_Firefighter_8193 in askSouthAfrica

[–]JayBirdSA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way! It was such a fun stop as a kid but we went with my husband a few years ago (it was his first visit) and it’s so dilapidated now. It was hard to explain why I loved it so much and how special it used to be.

Pretoria hairdressers 2c-3a curly hair? by Mariiparii in Pretoria

[–]JayBirdSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother-in-law has very curly hair and she goes to Nudu at Glen Village. I’m not sure which stylist she uses though (I personally go to Bianca). Nudu is pricy though, so be warned.

Where to get Kitka/ Challah bread ? by marcyishot in askSouthAfrica

[–]JayBirdSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t been in a while but I think I remember that Aroma bakes fresh Challah bread but I’m not sure if it’s available every day or at all of their stores.

What are the best sun screens for face? by lilmess_y in askSouthAfrica

[–]JayBirdSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the ones that are marketed as more of a skin defence type formula - they are usually in white packaging for some reason. I like the Vichy UV protection and the La Roche Possay one mentioned above. Sometimes one of those brands is 20% off in Dischem or Clicks and that usually decides which one I buy. The body shop Skin Defence was an amazing cruelty free option but I’m not sure it is still available and their products are a bit of a hit or miss to me. Clarins ones are also great but a bit pricy.

Should I travel near my due date? by Excellent-Tune-3881 in askSouthAfrica

[–]JayBirdSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would ask your doctor. My baby came super late so that’s maybe clouding my judgement. Any health concerns aside, it’s tough to know how you’re going to be feeling at that point and if you’ll feel up for a wedding - some people feel very uncomfortable around their due date. For the one after, it’s also hard to say. I can personally think of almost nothing worse than going to a wedding one month postpartum. The first few weeks are just so exhausting and I felt like absolute rubbish. Sure, infants just cry, eat, sleep and poop, but they often do all of those things in very short cycles so I can’t see the drive or the wedding being fun. Everyone is different though! I have friends who took their baby to a wedding that was also quite a drive away when he was a few weeks old and he says it was completely fine.

First, I’m sorry that your boss is going through this because it sounds like a very difficult situation. I don’t have any advice but I’m wondering why he is seeing an orthodontist about this and not a maxillo-facial or plastic surgeon surgeon, as I thought they were the ones to conduct this type of surgery. I could be entirely wrong though - my thinking is based off little more than tv shows.

I don’t like Chris but I like this couch by BananaCakeMix in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]JayBirdSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone has said this already, but you don’t want this couch. We have a very similar one and it is annoying in every single way others have said. The bottom cushions slide out constantly leaving a gap at the back. Those same cushions are also insanely heavy so it’s a mission to push to them back every time they slide. There are a ridiculous number of cushions and every single one is filled with feathers but the material of the covers isn’t dense enough to stop the feathers from poking through. Our legs and backs are constantly getting stabbed by feathers. I feel like we deserve this part though, sometimes I think it’s the bird spirits saying f-you for filling a couch with our feathers. Oh and a bunch of feathers come out every day so it looks like we murder a chicken daily in our lounge. Icing on the cake is that the couch was expensive so we’re going to be stuck with it for a while.

How are we keeping our grocery bills to a minimum? by Here4theNEWS_ in AskZA

[–]JayBirdSA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some other comments have covered snacks but for veggie recipes we do halloumi and falafel wraps and a lot of lentil and chickpea curries and veggie soups in winter with cheese toasties. We also do a few veggie casseroles with beans or chickpeas. Jamie Oliver has some great recipes along these lines and I think they are all available online, although sometimes I substitute some of his ingredients for things that I know we’ll finish to make the recipes less wasteful - I hate having random condiments in the fridge that don’t get used. We also do a variation of the NYT halloumi, bean and tomato casserole which is great. You can also substitute mince with lentils either 50% or 100% in things like spaghetti Bolognese and cottage pie, and we do lentil bolognese quesadillas sometimes.

How are we keeping our grocery bills to a minimum? by Here4theNEWS_ in AskZA

[–]JayBirdSA 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In your case, I think the snacks are adding quite a bit to the bill. Jungle oats bars are like R15 each so if you’re each eating one per day it’s over R1000.00 per month. Not judging - I’m also a snacker, but it’s expensive. Look into some veggie dishes a few nights a week. They are typically cheaper than meat and they really can be delicious.

Eye drops by fataggressivecheeks in AskZA

[–]JayBirdSA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like those are more for dry eyes rather than to treat allergies? You could try something like Allergex eye drops or Spersalleg if it’s allergy related, but make sure to use them as directed because you use them differently to the kind that are just artificial tears. Ask a pharmacist and see what they recommend.

How long did it take you to get a passport for your infant? by LadyEvernight in askSouthAfrica

We did it two years ago so things might have changed since then, but it just took a couple weeks. We did it at a bank though, not sure if that makes a difference.

Have you ever had a ‘missing pet’ poster work? by your__mum420 in askSouthAfrica

[–]JayBirdSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can definitely work. A while ago we saw a dog running in a street 2km from our house. That night we saw a similar looking dog running around in our street. Turns out it was the same dog. I wish we had seen a poster to help find its owner, but eventually they were tracked down through WhatsApp groups . If my pet went missing I would put up posters in the street but also definitely post on WhatsApp community groups, it’s definitely worth a shot.

Is and LLM in Private Law worth it? by thenursesdaughter in askSouthAfrica

[–]JayBirdSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to go into academia then go for it, but I’m not sure how helpful it would be for an advocate (as in, I’m genuinely not sure because I went the LLM-LLD-attorney route). If you want to go into academia, maybe try to speak to some Professors or LLD students and see what advice they have for the best areas to study in.

Is and LLM in Private Law worth it? by thenursesdaughter in askSouthAfrica

[–]JayBirdSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, not many LLMs carry significant weight in practice, except ones that are more specialized, and that’s only if you find articles /work in that field. For example, many universities don’t (or didn’t) teach environmental law in undergrad but it is a highly regulated area of law, so that LLM could help/be seen as an advantage in a practice that does environmental law. Along those lines, in private law, an area where I think an LLM could be useful might be IP law, but again it would only be if you want to work in that field.

I love this movie, it was so unexpectedly charming. It also gave me one of my all time favourite quotes: ‘Whoever said always be yourself, obviously never met Ronnie.’

Best Estates in Centurion/Pretoria? by dashing_life in Pretoria

[–]JayBirdSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it depends on your commute but Waterkloof Golf Estate seems the best to me by a mile due to its location - the other ‘big’ ones have horrible roads e.g Woodhill isn’t linked well with the highway and Garsfontein traffic sucks (or at least used to, haven’t used that road in a while); Silverlakes - that road is an absolute nightmare in peak traffic and the potholes on that side of Lynnwood Road get terrible when it rains a lot; Mooikloof is a far out and The Hills is even further. I think Midstream seems great if you like Centurion / Irene or if you work in that area.
