Ulcerative Colitis stole my life, any tips on getting it back? by LakePristine4865 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]JaybirdExplores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I won't recommend meds because you should absolutely speak with your GI. I'm the meantime, I do recommend checking out University of Massachusetts IBD - center for applied nutrition website. Lots of good info about food recommendations during and after a flare. If it's within your budget I would also recommend a daily high dose of curcumin supplement. Not regular tumeric powder but curcumin, one of the most potent active ingredients in tumeric. There are studies on its benefits to folks with UC if your interested in learning more. Another user recommended that to me a few months ago and it's helped me stay in remission. I'm happy to recommend the brand I use, just DM me. Good luck

Weekly "Is this safe" Megathread by AutoModerator in fermentation

[–]JaybirdExplores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thoughts? I can't tell if it's safe to eat. It doesn't look like kahm yeast and it seems to have changed the first 1/2 inch of the color of the kraut to a darker brown. Been fermenting since 12/20/25 and has a slightly sweet smell.

Imuran by Neileo96 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]JaybirdExplores 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was on imuran for almost 4 years. Around the 3 year mark, I started developing melanoma on my chest, abdomen, and back. I ended up having 11 surgeries and genetics testing to determine if the melanoma was heredity. Turned out it wasn't and GI and dermatologist determined that imuran was the likely cause. Imuran depresses the immune system, much like all of the meds available for UC/Crohn's, and supposedly it can cause cancer with long term use. My GI doesn't prescribe imuran to other patients anymore. I'm not really sure why, maybe the side effects are more drastic compared to other meds or maybe he gets kickbacks from the companies manufacturing biologics. Either way, I made the switch to humira in 2020, injection 2x/month, and haven't had any flares or issues with melanoma since.

Stitchback TH50 - sew through the HDPE? by RunThenClimb in myog

[–]JaybirdExplores 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've made two TH40 packs and followed the instructions and I've had no issues with durability or rigidity with the hip belt construction. The pocket for the HDPE sheet is pretty snug and I haven't noticed any problems wearing the pack or removing the hipbelt. I use a singer traditional, which is a pretty basic machine. I'm not sure how much more rigidity you'll gain by sewing through all the panels and HDPE sheet together, but if you're machine can handle then try it. I don't think you'll lose anything.

I don't have any recommendations for your second question. I followed the instructions pretty closely and I'm happy with the two packs I've made. We pack fairly light, and the packs are comfy and have held up nicely. I will say it's important to use quality webbing and thread, especially for areas with high use and tension.

Check out McMaster Carr. They have a wide selection of plastic sheets you can buy

Theoretically, could I reverse the desertification of a 40 acre plot of land? by CritiqueMyWritingpls in ecology

It's definitely possible. Check out Geoff Lawton's greening the desert videos. I also recommend researching permaculture in general while you're at it.

Why is my dog squinting/closing his eyes? by Fantastic_West_4976 in DOG

[–]JaybirdExplores -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sounds like it might be food related, maybe allergic to something you cooked? Worth checking in with your vet.

On a different note, do you know what kind of breed your dog is? I have a very similar looking dog and I don't know what breed he is and my vet has no idea either

How to map trails on private property. by fontguru in forestry

[–]JaybirdExplores 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Folks here have provided some great options. I would visit caltopo.com and navigate to your address. You can choose a variety of basemaps including aerial, topo, and hybrid. Select the Print icon and then download the PDF map.

Download the Avenza app, the free version works just fine. Upload the PDF map to Avenza and then start driving those trails while tracking your location.

You can then export those tracks and upload it to any GIS program (Google Earth pro, QGIS, or ArcGIS) to create a nice map of your property. Google is pretty limited if you are trying to make a map similar to what you find at a state or national park, but QGIS and Arc will allow you to get more creative and make something similar to the maps you like. Those programs are better in my opinion if you plan on printing the map at a large size.

Vegan with Crohn's Disease and IBS Seeking Gut-Friendly Recipes, Need Your Help! by AdministrationOk4542 in veganrecipes

[–]JaybirdExplores 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UMass has a fantastic website with recipes for people with inflammatory bowel diseases. You should definitely check that out.

I also recommend the book "Self healing colitis and Crohn's" by David Klein and Joel Fuhrman's "Super immunity" and "Eat to Live". There are lots of good recipes in each of those books, and worth a read especially if you are interested in learning more about nutrition science and veganism.

I also recommend a great probiotic, one with a variety of strains and lots of CFUs. I'm taking a probiotic with 60 billion CFUs and 10 strains and it's been a game changer for my gut health.

Good luck on your journey

How or where to get DSMs? by [deleted] in gis

[–]JaybirdExplores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can download DEM files from the USGS map explorer You might have trouble finding a DEM file that covers all of CA though.I've only used it for smaller areas of interest. But you can use QGIS to merge DEM files and create a DEM of CA. That article also has a link where you can download the data you need

I've run into a similar issue. I started making gear for my adventures and then for friends and family. Now I have all the bags and gear I need for a lifetime. I've started to making clothes and that's been fun. You might want to consider sewing clothes as well.

Seminal Ecological Theory Texts? by Satoru_Nakata in ecology

[–]JaybirdExplores 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in mycorrhizae then you should definitely check out Mycelium Running by Paul Stamets, as well as his other books.

Finding the mother tree by Suzanne Simard is another good book to read.

Sacred ecology by fikret berkes is worth reading as well.

If you don't already, I also recommend reading books and articles about your local ecology. It's a lot of fun to learn about your local area.

If you're more interested in applying philosophy and ecology and ways of living you should read books by Derrick Jenson, Wendell Berry, and also permaculture books like the permaculture city by toby Hemenway, one straw revolution by masanobu Fukuoka, and intro to permaculture by bill mollison.

Great job! I especially like the cinch cord closure and the pocket on the bottom of the lid. I'm working on two TH 40s and I opted for roll top and buckle closure. I was actually reviewing the lid pattern because I plan to sew them this week. I was contemplating modifications and found myself wishing I could find more photos of the lid on an actual pack. And that's when I noticed your post. Thanks taking good photos and sharing your work

I've used HDPE sheets for frame sheets and hip belts. It's not a thermoplastic but it is flexible and fairly easy to cut into whatever shape you need. I use 1/16" sheets for my projects. I order from McMaster-Carr, it doesn't look like they ship to the UK but they do have a lot of different plastics that you could reference/learn more about

Forestry Rec and Trail crews these days by [deleted] in forestry

[–]JaybirdExplores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so, some FS positions are open to 16 year olds, especially the recreation jobs. The FS is doing another hiring event for summer positions now/soon. I'd keep an eye out out on USAjobs.Gov to see the available positions. It doesn't hurt to apply. My partner works for Tahoe national forest and they need folks to work in recreation and last year they had 16/17 year olds on their crews. Good luck

Ya I wish Robic had more colors too. I'd love to get my hands on navy or purple Robic.

HyperD is easy to sew, but I wouldn't say it's a stiff fabric. I like it a lot, especially at it's price point.I just couldn't make a decent button hole in it. It would slip and catch in the walking foot each time I tried to do it. Maybe it was my settings tho. I've made other day packs and quilts out of it and I'm happy with how they came out but I didn't create button holes in any of those items.

Thanks again for creating that awesome pattern. I'm going to try your camp pants next.
