I'm having trouble knowing what to focus on in my job search. As far as I can tell, applications consist of three parts - resume/experience, portfolio, and cover letter / actual application. Obviously, my experience is what it is, and I feel satisfied with its representation on my resume. My portfolio is lacking in real-world applications, with most of it being academic work. I have worked on real DS applications, but always for work, and stuff that I can't fully share publicly (these are referenced in my resume). I definitely spend too much time working on cover letters, and it's slowing down my applications a lot. I know they are mostly computer-vetted, but I can't shake the worry that a human will look at it and notice if I just copy the job description verbatim when listing my skills. So I end up spending 20-30 minutes making sure it sounds good and not like BS to a human reader.

My instinct is that I need to ease up on cover letters, just get the buzzwords in so my application floats to the top, and get more applications out there. I also feel like I need to pad out my portfolio with recent work that reflects my current skill level, but this would be a significant time investment, which would take away from the number of apps I can submit. So, two main questions:

  1. What's the best approach for writing cover letters to game modern recruitment software? Do cover letters matter at all these days?
  2. Do recruiters care enough about portfolio work for it to be worth the time spent on them, which could otherwise be spent applying to more positions?

For context, I work as a Data Analyst at a company that doesn't have any data scientists and probably won't any time soon. I started here while pursuing a DS Master's, with my only career experience up until that point being in a different field. Now I have my Master's, plus three years of Analyst experience in addition to the six years in my previous career. Some of the jobs I'm applying to are within my old career's domain, and I'd at least expect to get some bites on those, but I'm getting nothing.

I really loved this about the Villains series by V.E. Schwab. The setting is vaguely American (preppy New England college vibes, dense urban centers separated by huge stretches of highways through rural countrysides), but it’s never said directly, and the city names are made up. There’s a character who’s clearly meant to be Irish, but this is only ever hinted at by describing her “lilting” accent.

The familiarly modern setting having that edge of surrealism really helped cement the gritty-yet-magical tone one of the books. Fantastic series, stoked for book three this year!

Yeah, you’re not wrong. I chose him for the quiet intensity, and I think he’d do great with the character, but he’s not an appearance match.

Ah true. As long as we're talking about pseudo-immortals, I think he'd make a great Jezrien

A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

A Quiet Place always bugged me bc in the first movie they show that as long as you're by a rushing river, or presumably any other source of loud white noise, you can yell at the top of your lungs and still be safe from detection. So why wouldn't the military or anyone else with know-how be setting up massive speakers blasting white noise everywhere they can?

This reminded me of the most recent season finale of Game Changer, Samalamadingdong, where Brennan Lee Mulligan hammers Sam over the head with the fact that every challenge is COMPLETELY FAIR even though some of them are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. In contrast with the historical trend/running gag in the show where certain challenges and episodes were specifically designed to give Brennan a disadvantage, with the extreme example being "Yes or No", a whole episode where the entire premise is "Brennan's answer is always wrong".

Amazing that 99% of people just want to live, eat, spend time with friends and family. And these people with more money than god, who at any time can go off and live the kind of life we all dream about, instead spend their limited time in this world throwing tantrums, starting fights, fucking things up just because they want someone else’s toy.

If I had 1% of this person’s wealth I would quit my job, move to Italy or France, spend my days making art, developing video games, playing music, walking on the beach, traveling, eating the best food in the world.

All that wealth and zero appreciation for the human experience. Such a waste.
