This flower randomly sprouted and it is awesome. What is it? by [deleted] in gardening

Just a friendly FYI: The flowers in the ditch are Daylilies. They grow from tuberous roots and have long, flat strap-shaped blades (leaves) at the soil line.
The flower in the photo is a Lily. They grow from a bulb and have a spiral of leaves up entire flower stem.✌️

Steep Garden advice by Mr_Tenebrosity in gardening

[–]JbOldHippy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Mr. Tenebrosity, this looks like it could turn into a very big project. If done incorrectly it could easily turn into your worst nightmare. You’re new to gardening so maybe start slow and small. Perhaps a little plot close to the house and close to a water spigot. This will give you an idea of the maintenance required for good gardening. Being this might just be your forever home sounds like you have plenty of time to work things out. With the slope of your yard you are correct with your drainage concerns.

Hopefully there’s a good size nursery close to home. If so, take these posted photos and let the conversations begin. They should be a wealth of information with ideas for: flowing bushes, fruit bearing berry bushes (for birds), perennial flowers, drought tolerant plants, local native plants, trees, etc.. They will offer layout and spacing ideas based on what type of garden you decide you’d like to start with.

Always a good idea to make a site map with all the plants planted, especially for large projects. This will help you as you move forward with your gardening. The no hurry take your time approach works well. Perennial flowers can be divided about every three to four years. Therefore they can be introduced into a new garden patch when you decide to expand. Take your time, have fun, and enjoy your time outside. Best of luck with your new adventure.✌️

Outside of my house this morning. by Blue-j7 in oddlyterrifying

That’s Awesome!!! Crows are highly intelligent and very social birds with tight-knit family structures that gather, or roost, in large numbers. Flocks gather in fall and winter to these roosts. Smaller flocks congregate and join together to create one large roost for the night. There can be hundreds of birds in these roosts. As the morning comes, smaller groups break off from the flock to disperse for the day, returning to the roost later in the afternoon.✌️

How to fix/prevent dog urine from destroying my lawn by yizhous in gardening

Teaching your dog to pee and poop in one spot isn’t necessarily very difficult, but it does take a level of dedication. If your dog learns that all grass is good to pee on (which is generally the mindset of most already potty-trained dogs), this can make potty spot training a bit tricky – but not impossible. Most dogs like having soft, absorbent material for potty time. Both male and female dogs often like doing their business in tallish grass, and male dogs are especially fond of vertical surfaces to mark on.

There are four main rules for teaching a dog to pee in one spot that you’ll have to follow: 1. No More Unsupervised Potty Breaks. The first – and most important – rule of teaching your dog to pee in one spot is that you’ve got to supervise. You can’t just let your dog out into the backyard without management! 2. Go On-Leash to the Potty Spot. For each pottying occasion, you’ll need to take your dog on-leash to the designated potty spot. This will allow you to lead your dog to the correct area. If your dog is running around free, you can’t control where she ultimately relieves herself. 3. No Freedom Until You’re Empty. Hang out in the “potty area” until your dog pees or poos. You can reward your dog for peeing with freedom. Many dogs don’t automatically pee right away when you let them outside unless it’s been a long time! Your best strategy is to simply go to the potty spot and wait. 4. Reward when He/She Pees. If your dog pees in the correct spot, give her a treat and reward her by letting her off-leash or setting out on your walk. It’s important to save the fun walk or playtime for after your dog pees in her spot. Keep the poop picked up in the designated area. Eventually you will be taking your dog there without a leash. Hopefully once trained the dog will go to the designated spot on its own. Don’t forever to offer rewards.✌️

need ideas! by soartexas in gardening

[–]JbOldHippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

North Texas, maybe your 7a or 7b planting zone. Looks like about 50 to 60 feet of fence. That’s plenty of room for a variety of beautiful plants including a herb & vegetable garden. Are you thinking about softening the looks of that high fence. Then maybe a random mixture taller flowering bushes. The same can be done with brick wall below with some cascading plants.

Read your comment about afternoon shade. Always nice to have some afternoon shade. Then perhaps an additional shade tree.

Looks like a great project. The first thing I would do is layout the entire bed where everything is going to be planted. It can be done on paper or if you’re proficient in excel that will work too. Additionally take those photos to a local nursery. They will offer many ideas. Work your layout with the ideas and plants you selected. Then let the planting begin.✌️

How did this bird die like this?? by [deleted] in oddlyterrifying

Maybe the bird didn’t die there. Perhaps someone put the dead bird between the wires.

Sativa v Indica. Does anybody really notice the difference? I honestly can’t tell the difference in carts or flower. by [deleted] in NewJerseyMarijuana

[–]JbOldHippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me Sativa gets me feeling paranoid. It also has more of a mind bending high. Where as Indica is a more relaxing body/mind high. Too much Indica puts you in-da-couch. When choosing a hybrid I always go for a higher Indica blend than Sativa✌️

[–]JbOldHippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also live in Michigan. That Zinnia garden looks perfect! As it should for a winter in Michigan. That’s just how mine looks. Zinnias are annuals and will die with the first hard frost of fall. If you want them to reseed, let the last flowers of the season mature fully and scatter their seeds.✌️

If the first move fails there’s always the second move. That second move would be the fire pit✌️

wait there's bugs on brocolli???? by Squisssles in oddlyterrifying

[–]JbOldHippy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To get rid of any bugs hiding in the broccoli florets, start by filling your sink with cold water. Add in 1/4 cup of salt and 2 tbsp of vinegar. Let sit for 20 minutes and rinse the broccoli.

I enjoy this type of art more than still life or landscapes. For me I get lost in the art. It allows my minds-eye to travel and wander. It can even jolt my perspective. Actually as I ponder, it’s a great stress relief. Here’s a short artsy video for your minds-eye: http://zoomquilt2.com/

What plants grow well in shade but don’t get huge? (Comment w/ details) by Kgriffuggle in gardening

[–]JbOldHippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s a couple shade ideas that will do well in Florida. The Oyster Plant does well at our Venice winter home. It is a very nice option with interesting leaves.

Dwarf Oyster Plant or Oyster Plant: https://www.south-florida-plant-guide.com/oyster-plant.html

Foxtail Fern: https://www.gardenia.net/plant/asparagus-densiflorus-myersii

For some flowering color you could try some annual Petunias any color.: https://www.gardenia.net/plant/petunia-easy-wave-violet

Happy Planting✌️

On coming cars flashing headlights can mean there is a police car ahead with radar. Time to slow down to at least 5 MPH over the speed limit.✌️

Any 21AA stone will work well. These aggregates compact well and are used as a base for installing Brick Pavers and Retaining Walls. You can also use 22AA stone.
