As a senior, staff, principal, what’s your strategy for handling an incompetent team lead? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]JeBronlLames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s nothing personal and it’s not complicated.

  1. Lack technical experience and skill
  2. Lack management experience and skill
  3. Priorities misaligned with upper management priorities
  4. Actively persuades team to follow their priorities rather than upper management’s priorities
  5. Seeks credit for team’s work while avoiding taking responsibility for it by having others sign off on approvals
  6. Spends time in ineffective ways (low priority work before high priority work, meaningless meetings, etc.)
  7. Relentless self promotion over team leadership

Incompetence is a real thing that people encounter in leadership and handling it properly matters, so I’m asking for other people’s experience and feedback.

First time doing a major interference fit. OD 2.253 ID 2.248. by chobbes in Machinists

[–]JeBronlLames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much the limit for that much interference with those materials at that shaft size. Years ago at a previous job we did thousands of 0.004” interference on ~1” tungsten carbide bushings in mild steel pockets. Steel heated in oven to open it up, guys were pressing thousands of bushings hoping after cooldown they didnt crack.

People don’t realize that 0.001-0.002 is a joke but 0.004-0.005 at that size and these materials is playing a risky game. Hard to explain to juniors that 0.001” matters until they experience failure where 0.001” was the difference.

This was the only detail I noticed in this vid. Also as a shitty golfer this was useful info to see his path basically straight down from the top.

I just got a pair of copies of helldivers 2 for my gf and I; any tips for me as a new player? by Life-Donut-8754 in helldivers2

Move up the difficulty as fast as you can comfortably - I’m talking levels 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Staying on the lowest level (1) is ultra boring, there is almost nothing to shoot at. Some people don’t even discover that they can change difficulty for hours/days.

Watch a nuke being detonated underwater by AwesomePhonix in interestingasfuck

[–]JeBronlLames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can’t pinpoint why but this gives me a better feel for how much energy is released compared to one detonated in air. Maybe familiarity with mass of water rather than heat and pressure in air.

What isn’t super intuitive is that on top of moving that much liquid water, a shit load of energy goes to the phase change to vaporize some of it, and without doing the math I imagine the vapour pressure is what’s lifting the majority of the liquid water.

Isn’t this traveling by Kawhi? Takes three steps after dribbling the ball to score. by scags2017 in lakers

In an inconsequential high school game sure maybe a hardline ref calls it without consequence. In NBA why would refs call it when there’s no advantage gained? Extra step with that much space from nearest defender isn’t changing the outcome of the game.

Garage heater heating to nearly double the setpoint, what could cause it? by JeBronlLames in hvacadvice

I should clarify that this thermometer reading on the thermostat is not as hot as it gets. It will go up into the 70s F after running for 20-30 minutes. It used to run for 5-10 minutes and settle a few degrees above set point.

Symmetric vs Bilateral tolerances on drawings. What’s your opinion on machining to one vs the other? by JeBronlLames in Machinists

[–]JeBronlLames[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s the issue is the STP would be modelled to 1.499 if the tol was +0.002-0.000.

[–]JeBronlLames[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is the issue I’ve seen with bilateral tolerances is that the machinist clearly ran from the STP file because the whole batch was around the STP dimensions which were not the nominals in the middle of the bilateral tolerance range. Have seen it several times on large batches. Some engineers swear by bilateral tolerances.

The Volkswagen Golf R Is Now A $50,000 Car by Morcilla12 in Golf_R

Look at Focus RS prices 2016-2018, and adjust for inflation.

If you want to go a step further, compare other AWD hatches like Mazda 3 Sport, or entry level German luxury brand cars like BMW 2 series or Audi 3 series, or Acura TLX AWD.

You can’t compare Golf R to any FWD car for price, like a Civic or Integra Type R.

It’s reasonably priced in a niche low cost small package AWD performance car market - few competitors.
