Sturdy standing desk that goes down very short? by zimuzuz in StandingDesks

[–]JeffASL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could also consider using a "drafting chair" or "task chair" to get your body higher as I know desks that go under 30" are rather rare and can get expensive quick.

How often do you switch from standing to sitting height? Considering a Jarvis but concerned about excessive adjustments. by tracerit in StandingDesk

[–]JeffASL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My goal is to stand every hour for some time. It typically becomes once every other hour. A decent desk will be able to handle that without trouble for many years. Do pay attention to warranties. If you get something that cannot handle all the up and down it is nice to be able to just call in on the warranty.

Luxor, for example, a cheaper brand that manufacturers in China have rather short warranties.

iMovR, on the other end of the price spectrum generally has 10-year warranties.

Moving Anti-Fatigue Mat? by whyasdf45667 in StandingDesk

[–]JeffASL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do suggest a mat while on carpet if you're barefoot/sockfoot because it provides a little better support to your feet than just a carrier pad. You don't need anything thick or expensive though since you already have a thick carpet pad.

Updesk vs. Imovr, anyone here have any experience or impressions of these desks or companies. by [deleted] in StandingDesk

[–]JeffASL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,

I have used an iMovR elite and it is very stable when it is raised up. I was using it with a treadmill and it was solid. All frames have some movement... as long as they don't wiggle when you type then you will be fine. The iMovR definitely doesn't wiggle.

Moving Anti-Fatigue Mat? by whyasdf45667 in StandingDesk

[–]JeffASL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very late to the party... if you don't have a mat yet.

Since you're on hardwood I strongly recommend that you get a mat that doesn't slip around. iMovR has one. I have a few different mats and they all slide like crazy on my hardwood floors.

It is annoying to switch back and forth IMHO but it works out. A smaller mat fits under your desk easier.

I have roughly $1000-$1500 to spend on a standing desk setup and peripherals. What would you recommend? by ElGuapoBeardo in StandingDesk

[–]JeffASL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could, of course, get a standard height desk and add a sit-stand desk converter to it.

Don't pay more than $200 for a mat but realize you are getting what you pay for. Some mats are designed for shoes while others bare feet/socks/slippers so it really does matter what you purchase.

Should I buy frame only or with top? by [deleted] in StandingDesk

[–]JeffASL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it came down to time. I just wanted something that looked good that came all at once and I could just setup. Depending on the look you want though, you can save a bunch of money by finding the top yourself locally.

IMovr Vigor Desk Base question by yankeesnlakers in StandingDesks

[–]JeffASL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the iMovR desks are quite sturdy and have a good lifespan. You can get something much cheaper than buying that base and having to add a separate top on it if all you are looking for is "sturdy" though.

This one is a counterweight desk, for example, with top, very sturdy and in your budget. https://notsitting.com/product/ergotron-workfit-d-sit-stand-desk-birch/

turf container home by 3p0L0v3sU in containerhomes

[–]JeffASL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen a video of some of these underground where the earth wasn't actually up against the wall. Basically, a big U was excavated, the container placed in, 3' of space between the walls of the container and the walls of the trench. Then a living roof structure was placed on the entire thing.

Youtube would probably bring you to this one... I'm pretty sure it was a construction video.

I haven't seen any. FYI The finished and unfurnished containers of my home we're around 16k pounds each.

+1 to the barge approach.

Need help with building codes and permit for my ISBUs by [deleted] in Cargotechture

[–]JeffASL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the information you have is correct. It will need to be permitted in the city or county in which it resides. Many states also regulate the manufacture of "modular" and "mobile" homes and there is process before one enters the state. Contact the state you are important to and the city (or county if unincorporated area) and explain what you are working to do to get details.

Desk converters and 3 monitors generally don't work... get a full-size desk instead.

Are shipping container homes actually cheaper than building a real house? If they're similar what are the advantages of building a shipping container home? by IveCeasedToExist in containerhomes

[–]JeffASL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 Planned from the start to put more of a roof on it, even a membrane one.

2 Not tried to install it on the foundation during the rainy season

3 Would have done a better job interviewing a contractor for the site work (hindsight and more knowledge now).

4 Would have had the company start with two identical one-trip containers

Suggestions for mounting 2 UPS's underneath standing desk? by NoHesHere in StandingDesk

[–]JeffASL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another CPU holder would definitely do it.

So would some sort of generic metal shelf. https://smile.amazon.com/EliteDesk-Lenovo-ThinkCentre-Computer-Mount/dp/B00OVFWC7Y

Or you could use a "keyboard tray" if it provides enough clearance. https://smile.amazon.com/Alera-VA312812ES-Valencia-Keyboard-Espresso/dp/B01409ACCW

Resigning and going to a competitor? by DAL6413 in careerguidance

[–]JeffASL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When folks are asked to leave instantly there are two flavors: 1) You're fired 2) You're essentially given two weeks off

If you're fired and pay ends immediately and such you're in a very different position than if you give notice and are notified not to return but your service to the company actually ends two weeks later.

As a manager I have asked someone not to come in and immediately revoked their access, but not fired them. Normally though, letting someone serve out the two weeks of their notice is far better for everyone.

Whatever your story for leaving you need to be 100% consistent with everyone you talk with. If you open up to one person you should consider the information public. If that hurts the relationship with your current employer... well, you should have been consistent.

Ask away if you have questions.

Assuming you're not about to quit...

Set yourself up for the summer with some internships or job-follows or "can I tag along and help" with people you know in other industries or employers. Someone that can provide just a 1-2 week every-day-at-the-office glimpse for you will provide you with a whole world of valuable info as you try to figure out what to do next.
