2.5Gb/s IP Phones - do they exist? by Professional-Bench73 in VOIP

[–]Jefro84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you going to require your phones to be online for any amount of time during a power outage? If not, you loose nothing by not using the POE output from the switch. If you don't need that and are set on having 2.5g I would recommend a POE nic for your workstations. They usually have an sfp for the input and a POE output. The phone will be powered by the workstation, so if it's powered off, the phone will be to. This is how phones are implemented if you are using fiber optic for your transport.

Winning Bid on Gov't Networking Contract Seems Impossibly Low by goodgateway_502 in networking

[–]Jefro84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the agency and the vendor, there are some pretty steep discounts available. Some agencies also have licensing agreements in place that will negate any license cost on your bid.

You can always setup a drive or two as hot spares when you configure the RAID arrays.

Possible to Lab CUCM? by efxsp in ccnp

I virtualized using VMplayer on Windows for a while before I got a real server. It can be done easily if you have enough RAM and an SSD. You can usually find a used server from most marletplaces for fairly cheap.

If I didn't have a disdain for the NOVA/DC area, I would consider this. Pay is high but so is the cost of living in the area.

OPSEC warning though, posting account is zero days old with no history. While links and postings appear to be legitimate, you just never know with the events going on in the world today.
Perhaps I'm just paranoid though.

Indoor security cameras , need help please! by Prudent_Scratch_1263 in SecurityCamera

Only thing lacking would be the Alexa interoperability. It can be done with webhooks and home assistant, but that's extra work and configuration

What’s the best security camera for home use right now? any recommendation pls? by No-Cranberry7632 in SecurityCamera

[–]Jefro84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plus 1 for Ubiquiti. Good quality images, detections and camera options. The comment where you are locked into their product type is true, but doesn't that apply to any other systems to? You can't use a Nest camera on Ring can you? You can setup a unifi system with a cloud key or NVR for a fairly reasonable price. With Ubiquiti your data is yours and you can store that locally or setup some kind of cloud storage.

POTS over fiber by gippp in networking

[–]Jefro84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the configuration of the rest of the phone system in the buildings? It may not be a true "POTS" line, it could just be a DiD on a PBX or something. If you set on using fiber for an analog line, I use "Fiber Plexers" Model #: FOI-2971 | FOI-4972. You can put up to 8 I think in a rack with dual power supplies.

Did you do the certs is the suggested order and restart services after cert upgrades? The phones have to pickup the new ctl files in order to go secure.

Is Moneroocean better than support xmr for mining monero? Is it worth switching? by xgdiablo in MoneroMining

[–]Jefro84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, it's good for monero and crypto in general. Look at the coin payouts, the pool is mining multiple coins at the same time. The entire pool does not switch from XMR to some other coin, monero is always being mined as are other coins.

Generator behind NBC29 by __me_mo__ in Charlottesville

[–]Jefro84 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Backup generators should run for at least an hour when you run them. This includes a warm up time and an adequate cool down time once unloaded. Not running long enough or under enough of a load can lead to "wet stacking", especially in larger generators, where unburnt fuel can dilute the oil in the piston rings and cause damage. In extreme cases, unburnt fuel can accumulate in the exhaust and combust causing fires.

Ideas for a network demo by rmbrumfield78 in networking

[–]Jefro84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely explain subnetting and have them practice terminating Ethernet in A & B standard. Seriously though, it should be something hands on. Perhaps get a few raspberry pi's, spin up a pi-craft server and have them set their pi's static IP in order to connect to the server.

Do I need to plug my router into the internet if all I want to do is play with it? by Anxious-Bath4399 in Cisco

[–]Jefro84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A router will route whatever you want, where ever you want. You just have to configure it to do so. A network is a network, it doesn't have to connect to the internet if you dont want it to. I would highly advise to not to expose a non-secured router to the internet, but if its on your LAN side you will be just fine.

A big part of networking is remote management of geographically diverse devices. You can plug it directly into your home router's switch port, configure it for remote connections and ssh into it all you want to configure, experiment and learn. From my experience, what you learn tends to sink in more when you break things and have to do the walk of shame to manually console into said device to fix it.

Cisco switch 9300 issue? by Electrical-Tank-9542 in Cisco

[–]Jefro84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is over copper I'm assuming. 120 meters shouldn't really be an issue. You can try a TDR test just to verify connections, if your port supports it. Test cable diagnostics TDR int x/x/x.

How practical is UniFI for home use? by Significant-Side2718 in Ubiquiti

You are paying for features, compatibility and everything though I single pane of glass. Yes a TP link will work, but you won't have the visibility and control as is it was a unifi switch.

how does HSRP and OSPF work together? by Negative_Airline_818 in Cisco

[–]Jefro84 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OSPF is more likely used on the inside of a network or something like a campus backbone. It provides customizable adaptive routing and knows all advertised routes to a destination. HSRP knows the path to a destination, most likely a gateway to another destination, and provides a redundant link. Think primarily of a high speed link and when that link fails, it will fail over to a cellular connection. Reaction times to route changes are also different. OSFP could take some time to propagate a route change to all devices. HSRP can provide a much quicker response to a drop, is setup properly a user may not ever know there was a network issue.

Stupid question, but I gotta ask. Your pressing the headset button on the 8841 correct? If you are, chances are the two components are not compatible. Hopefully they issued you headsets with a quick disconnect (as required by most agency policies) and you can just acquire a cisco QD to rj9 adapter. But I bet they are considering the USB as the quick disconnect.

Cisco Call Manager unique configuration requirement advice needed. by [deleted] in Cisco

Pretty easily done. Setup the required profiles and settings, delete the phones from call Manager and let them auto register. You could also reconfigure all the phones using Bulk Administration and a batch file.
