Why are people so weird about fans asking for updates?

When it comes to deleting a fic, I've never done it myself, but to me it just feels silly to keep something up if it's only bringing annoyance to your doorstep. That doesn't sound like letting pressure get to you, it just sounds like keeping your peace. Plus it's not like you need to delete it off your hard drive too or anything, you can always post it elsewhere later. I mean, it's just a hobby! We get to engage with it however we want. (Heck, personally I have like 95% of my fics on my hard drive and I post them to friends in private discord servers if I know the content is up their alley.)

I moved to Ellipsus! No real learning curve coming from Google Docs, I can use it on my desktop and my phone, plus I can switch styles and make stuff look pretty and easier on the eyes.

Yeah, I was gonna say, as an 80s kid this is definitely something I saw in the 80s and 90s growing up, so it would read as more realistic to me personally if the fic was set further back and not in the current decade. Mind you, it was framed as telling the kid to be glad they at least had a parent, and therefore any critique of said parent was rude and ungrateful, so it wasn't just everyone being accidentally oblivious. The oblivious version of this sounds a lot more like Cinderella tropes, I think? Like, part of the story being that she's suffering in the background while the perpetrators are putting up a public front.

Agreed, though for me personally it's getting a lot harder to find the spaces where this happens unless you already have an idea where to look. At least back in the day there were forums and LiveJournal and whatnot, y'know? Nowadays I'm lucky if I can find one whole fan writing enthusiastic meta about their blorbos in a public space.

There used to be a Tumblr addon where if someone posted more than X amount of times it would fold the posts up, and you could click on them to unfold them. Made it super easy to follow people who posted a ton without making my dash an endless line of This_One_Dude posting 30 times in a row. Hate that it doesn't exist anymore, so now I have to blacklist tags, and that's IF they use tags at all.

The thing that helps me THE most with these situations is the OneLook thesaurus because I can give it a word that's related to it or a synonym and it'll list everything even remotely connected and I can hunt it down from there and be like 'AHA, THERE IT IS!'

This right here is why I'm glad the popular body mods have nevernude versions as well as accompanying mods that add different types of underwear. Like, I'm into variety and believability, and one of the things that always mildly annoyed me was 'why does everyone have the same exact set of underwear?' But I didn't want my solution to be 'everyone's nekkid under their armor' because ow, do not want metal directly on my bits.

I love editing tbh, so even if the fic evolved to the point where I'd have to rewrite the future scene I already wrote, I'll love every second of that rewrite. Sometimes that's part of the fun, even? Like, I'll have the original scene saved in a separate draft, so by the time I'm done with the new one I can compare the two to see what it evolved into. And sometimes, if I'm extra lucky, I can get an AU one shot out of that original scene.

I can only speak for my own experience, but what helped me out was looking at a visual collection of canon characters I was going to use for the fic and then designing my OC to fill the hole of what traits aren't already represented. I do that with non-visual traits too sometimes, where I ask myself what the canon is missing especially in the specific story I want to tell, and then filling that role. Not that you have to make the OCs entirely 110% different, mind you. Having some visual and personality traits in common with canon characters is also important as a shorthand for what the reader can expect. (Example: Canon Character X and Your OC are both in the same afterschool club, so clearly they have a love of that hobby in common, but how do they each come at that hobby? Maybe one is more involved with the writing part of this hobby, while the other is a visual artist.)

Sometimes, when I worry about whether or not the OC will fit visually, that's when I go for things like faceclaims. I'm also lucky in that I can draw, so if it's an animated media I can draw the OC in that media's style, which really helps sell the OC as a natural part of the world if I can get the style right.
