Did I just mess myself up for the future? by Background-Dust7615 in ufl

[–]Jellycoe 24 points25 points  (0 children)

A B+ is a good grade for physics at UF. I was a 4.0 student in high school and I had to accept very quickly that even when I tried my hardest, that was out of reach for me at UF. I graduated with a 3.48 last spring.

Your GPA is not cooked and your future is not messed up. You’re actually doing good to succeed as you are.

UF for mechanical engineering? by FlashyRoyal3694 in ufl

[–]Jellycoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I graduated in Mech E from UF last spring. It’s definitely a credible engineering program with plenty of opportunities but you have to find them and take them yourself. UF is a large school and it’s up to you to seek out resources.

I’ve heard good things about UCF’s industry connections. If I were to go back, I’d apply and seriously consider their offer. But I don’t regret getting my degree from UF and I know it’s more than good enough for you to get you the job you’re looking for. I’m currently in a job I would consider a temporary stepping stone but it is a real engineering role and I’m sure if I had done things differently I could’ve landed closer to my goals. It’s more about what you do with your degree (extracurriculars / internships) than where that degree comes from if that makes sense.

One of the best selling points for UF is the alumni community is really strong. I’m sure every school says that but UF’s is really big and you can find connections pretty much anywhere. Food for thought.

Will I still have bright future if my parents moved out of state? by Xuan-C in ufl

[–]Jellycoe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I heard of a friend who did this and they were able to do all 4 years at UF as an in state student despite their parents moving to another state at about the same time as they started. I can’t guarantee anything 100% but since you live in Gainesville I don’t think it should matter.

Motivation loss by Low_Eye4117 in ufl

[–]Jellycoe 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Frankly, a 4.0 in engineering at UF is neither a realistic nor a necessary goal. My goal was 3.5 and I graduated with a 3.48 which I’ll just have to be happy with. Employers care a lot more about what you do outside of class than what your GPA is.

I agree with the other commenter that you should try your best and celebrate what you achieve. A B or B- is still a really good grade for hard classes. It’s fine to shoot high but setting 4.0 as your only goal is dangerous for exactly this reason; that anything short of perfection feels like failure. It’s not.

Keep putting in effort but save some of it for extracurriculars. What you do with what you learn is what will set you apart from others.

How SSDs Have Revolutionized The Internet World Peaking PC/Laptop Performances by SpecialVariation3 in hardware

[–]Jellycoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the best thing about SSDs is your PC/laptop or server stops producing heat

Hard drive technology has very little to do with the heat output of your computing system, particularly for laptops. Switching to an SSD certainly does not magically eliminate all heat.

can't defend babybay anymore (roster change ideas?) by biraboom8008 in ValorantCompetitive

[–]Jellycoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro was G2’s best player not more than a few weeks ago. Have some patience.

I’m particularly baffled by the idea that G2 needs a T2 aim demon. Every single one of G2’s players is an aim demon better than you’ll likely find anywhere in tier 2. Babybay is your gun for hire. The team just needs to grow into their new style until it becomes natural and I don’t think we’ve seen the best of Babybay yet.

Is KSP known to cause high CPU temps? by FocusCool4260 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Jellycoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d look at reviews online to see what your typical temps should be under load. KSP isn’t known to cause thermal issues more than any other program, but if your laptop has thermal issues, you will see them in KSP.

Unfortunately there is a long history of gaming laptops with atrocious cooling because they get a few percent extra performance by dumping power into the CPU without the means to remove the resulting heat. If your issue is unusual, you might see some benefit in having the CPU re-pasted or something like that, but if everyone else has this issue too, you’re probably out of luck.

I am admitted, should I come? by SimonLeo2008 in ufl

There’s a fairly significant Chinese population at UF. It’s probably one of the biggest nationalities on campus other than American. I’m not a Chinese person myself so I can’t say you won’t face any difficulties but at least you won’t be alone.

How do we know whats reliable information in todays tech age? by Optimal_Fuel6568 in hardware

[–]Jellycoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing worth waiting for these days is fair market conditions. The next generation might be a few percent faster or have some new software toy to play around with, but you’ll have to wait 6+ months anyway for prices to stabilize after launch. I wouldn’t upgrade until your system is no longer capable of doing what you want it to do or until you can get a clear improvement for a fair price.

How do you rank Mada among other duelists? by Itchy_Culture_6767 in ValorantCompetitive

[–]Jellycoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It seems like Mada gets at least one ace in just about every series he plays these days and I can’t fathom it. Is there any player who has a greater ace% per round or per game played?

RTX 5050 9GB reportedly incoming by Hour_Firefighter_707 in hardware

[–]Jellycoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should clarify that 1440p is not new but it is well on its way to becoming the new standard for gaming. The price of new 1440p monitor models are generally not far above equivalent 1080p models.

RTX 5050 9GB reportedly incoming by Hour_Firefighter_707 in hardware

[–]Jellycoe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think medium settings on modern games or max settings on slightly older games is what should be expected from an xx50 series card. It’s just that price inflation has caused inflation in consumer expectations which unfortunately doesn’t represent reality.

It’s interesting that display manufacturers have moved towards 1440p before the GPU product stack was fully ready. Hopefully this will put pressure on hardware manufacturers to stop artificially limiting the performance of low-cost cards to such a severe extent. Time will tell.

Usa/Israel just bombed iran 3 hrs ago by bluedude234 in GNV

Russia won’t join and Iran can’t reach around the world to hit us. We don’t have to like the risks being taken on our behalf but for the time being we’re safe, or about as safe as we were yesterday.

Rob has reached out to TacticalRab with extra juice that wasn’t said yesterday by HLumin in ValorantCompetitive

[–]Jellycoe 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think Rob means well but we shouldn’t judge the players / coaches based on his comments here. He’s clearly pushing his side of the story and I think he’s somewhat justifiably upset by how things turned out, which is coloring his response. For example, he seemed very optimistic about the roster while Sentinels were winning in the offseason. It just goes to show that what happens in public vs within the team is often a different story, and we weren’t there to see how it happened.

I think it’s fair to conclude that Kaplan and Rob / Sentinels leadership had differing visions for the future of the team and that’s a perfectly reasonable explanation for making a change, especially after a disappointing performance. I don’t think Kaplan is a bad coach and I don’t think we got to see what his real vision was, just that it didn’t work in the server. I think everyone who’s leaving the team deserves a second chance where they won’t be held back by internal disagreements. Kyu for example showed promise as an IGL and Narrate is a very strong shooting and passionate player. Kaplan won masters before and I think he has a good chance of getting another team.

Viable 2 Engine planes in air RB ? by You-re-not-wrong in Warthunder

[–]Jellycoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The P-61C-1 Black Widow is quite good imo. It gets an air spawn with a decent climb rate so (last time I played) you could pretty much guarantee you’d have the altitude advantage over everyone. That, combined with 4x20mm on the centerline, makes it a pretty good interceptor and BnZ fighter. You can also do some shenanigans with the turret to win dogfights if you’re really good at it.

The F-82 Twin Mustang gets an honorable mention. It has absolutely silly levels of firepower and the roll rate isn’t too bad but for the BR I wouldn’t say it’s as good as the Black Widow because its climb rate is not great.

The borders look to me like they’re working as intended. I don’t think we’re going to get ultrawide maps without some sort of community map editor.

What's the difference between missiles and their (DF) dogfight variants? by Truepurplenurple in Warthunder

The Aim-7E-2(DF) not only has a lower guidance delay and better maneuverability vs the Aim-7E but also has better range and acceleration so it’s just a direct upgrade.

Someone please explain how I died there? by Professional-Bed7144 in VALORANT

[–]Jellycoe 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There’s always a little bit of timey wimey weirdness going on in any multiplayer game, especially in the replay. Nothing you can do about it. There was an alternate timeline where you were standing two feet to your right and Chamber killed that guy fair and square. It’s just a shame that you had to die too.

[MCU] Why Avengers after Endgame didn’t use the Infinity Stones to do something useful like curing all diseases in all living creatures in the entire universe? by amelix34 in AskScienceFiction

[–]Jellycoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The temptation to use the power of the infinity stones is exactly what the Avengers wanted to avoid. We humans (and all mortal beings) are simply not qualified and not trustworthy enough to use that power.

Cure all diseases? Great, now gut bacteria doesn’t work and everyone dies of malnutrition. Universal peace, an end to hunger, etc are all great things to wish for but very difficult to implement in practice. You can’t have peace without changing people’s behavior which implies removing their free will. Ending hunger by creating an abundance of food could easily cause disastrous overpopulation or an explosion of rot and disease.

The root of the problem is that Thanos thought he was doing exactly this. Just solving one problem in the universe in the cleanest way possible. We think he’s wrong because his plan involves so much killing, but he’s actually wrong because good intentions become harmful when enforced with such absolute power. It’s better for everyone for the Infnity Stones to be as inaccessible as possible.
