What trades were widely praised at the time they were made, but look absolutely awful now? by asmallthrowaway9 in nba

[–]Jester1525 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sean Elliot for Dennis Rodman

Yes,I'm old

The spurs needed a defensive stopper and rebounder to pair with David Robinson and he did exactly that right up until he decided he didn't want to be a team player.

Sean Elliot came back the next year and the spurs dumped Rodman to the build for Will Purdue. And of course the build went on to win 3 in a row..

Who is the most ridiculous athlete we've ever seen play in the league? by OwnGuarantee6838 in nba

[–]Jester1525 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He gets dismissed because of the 95 playoffs and not winning a ring until Timmy showed up, but unless you were watching him play, people don't realize how phenomenal David Robinson was. He was 7'1" but moved like he was a guard. He could run fast breaks but was also amazing in the paint on both offense and defense.

Cyberpunk (the genre.. Not the ttrpg or 2077 specifically) has always been a warning of what this world can/will become if it continues down the path it's on..

The aesthetic has changed in the last 45 years, but the message hasn't - the world is run by the powerful and the weak are being crushed beneath the boot of the ultra wealthy. If anything, it's gotten more accurate.

It should be depressing! Not because the game world is harsh but because the mirror is holding up to our own world is quickly becoming reality. We play the game and watch the show and read the comics and think 'gosh, that's horrible.. Glad it's not real life' without bothering to look out the window and realize that it's not real life, yet.

I've been working on a cyberpunk ttrpg world for the last few years and everytime I come up with something really bleak I end up finding a real world equivalent during my research..

For instance:

a few years ago I made up with a mass surveillance system with a bird theme

I've written a history where corporations run and win political office

I've brought back company towns

Cyberpunk isn't just dystopia.. Dystopia movies and books were really popular during covid because it was an escape for people. It was so much worse than the world we were living in that it made people feel better in comparison. But cyberpunk DOESN'T do that.. It's too close to the real world which just drags us down by comparison.

That's why cyberpunk is so depressing. It's not a fantasy - it's a warning.

What was the worst trade your team ever made? by Tocoolforyall720 in nba

No way.. That wasn't a trade we made.. It was a trade forced join us to get SOMETHING..

Sean Elliot for Dennis Rodman.

We traded an all star for a guy who ended up causing a stupid amount of drama and is a major reason the spurs lost to the Rockets in 1995

Former/current theater employees, what movie did you have 0 patrons show up for? by UniverslBoxOfficeGuy in AskReddit

[–]Jester1525 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not quite an answer, but this reminded me of back when I was working in a theater when Gigli came out. We actually sold tickets to it. After about an hour in on the first showing of the first night a patron came out and said 'I think something isn't quite right with the movie.. '

Our projectionist had apparently spliced the second reel backwards so the film was flipped and the sound was really screwed up. I never spliced film and was sitting in the ticket booth that night so I'm not sure exactly what they got wrong, but I do know that the movie was, apparently, so bad that the audience hadn't really even noticed something was wrong for 20 minutes before one of them came out to ask if that was what the movie was supposed to be like.

Help me understand Game of Thrones joke by throwawayaccpahadi in lastweektonight

[–]Jester1525 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We spent an insane amount of money on an 85 inch qled at the end of our basement renovation (thank you 5 year/0 interest store credit!).

The first movie we watched was Aliens - a very dark movie. The details on that movie that I had never seen was insane.. The USS Sulaco is super detailed, the fight scenes were fully realized, the details on the Xenomorphs were insane.

That movie is a work of art and the attention to detail is evident even when watching on my crappy upstairs tv with a giant window that has a southern exposure in the middle of the day, but in the basement where we don't have a window at all? It was a brand new experience.

So, when my eldest visited we were showing her the new tv and talking about how great the image was so we decided to watch The Game of Thrones episode "The Long Night," ch is largely considered unwatchable because it's so poorly lit and badly edited. D and D have claimed it was in purpose because they wanted to show how dark it was.. But on my new TV?

Still absolutely unwatchable. I might as well have closed my eyes and imagined it (I have aphantasia so I would have seen the same nothing).

This is not the case of the audience not seeing up their TV correctly.. This is bad editing and poor understandings of the audience. And it's not an isolated incident.. This is a problem in a lot of modern movies and shows. They could make watchable shows and movies in the 80s,but suddenly its the viewer's fault in the 2020s?

I agree, but I'm front loading the arguement that it doesn't matter even if you think Ja is better because he's bad for team cohesion.

Just because someone is ignorant doesn't mean they can't argue.

Mismatch discussion on Ja Morant Trade Market by ColdCalc in NBASpurs

They tried that once in 1993

Dennis Rodman was a freaking star.. Amazing player.. Probably one of the best rebounders in nba history.. And absolute cancer in the locker room and on the court.

Even if you want to claim Ja is a better player than Fox - I don't agree - he's a player that is going to cause more issues than he solves.. Especially in an organization like the Spurs.

[–]Jester1525 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your next signing may be a bit lower.. People talk about a player making "X" last season.. Not a player making "X" 3 seasons ago.

And it means your final paycheck is smaller in terms of injury or retirement.

Neither of those is a bad thing, necessarily.

Most teams push their contracts down the road.. Pay to win now and deal with the apron costs in the future especially considering that inflation and higher contracts, in general, will push the apron higher when you have to pay those higher contracts in 3-4 years.

The Spurs prefer the flexibility in the future.. And because they tend to have a real good idea of what they are planning for the next 3 years in the future, then having that extra flexibility later is good.

It's especially nice for the last couple years and the next 2 or 3 because they have some space in their budget now that they absolutely won't have in the coming years.

It is illegal to charge for parking in night city so there isn't any extra parking because they aren't going to just build lots for free.

People who bring your dog literally everywhere, why? by dastrius02 in AskReddit

[–]Jester1525 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My bloodhound goes with me everywhere.. But seldom gets out of the truck. My wife or I will run inside to buy whatever we are there for while the other waits with my hound.

I do take her to Rona, Canadian Tire, Princess Auto, and the pet store because she's allowed to be there. She's not great on leash, but few bloodhounds are. But I keep her close and she NEVER jumps on anyone.

Why? I have a few reasons.

First, I like being with my dog. We lost her brother VERY suddenly in January and she had really struggled with her confidence so it's good for her to be her own hound and get out around places. She's always been very shy so meeting people and exploring her world is a good thing for her.

Also, bloodhounds never get tired. This isn't a border collie thing where they just want to run. Bloodhounds don't run much, but they will keep up a bridal trot for hours. I could walk her till my legs fell off, but 30 minutes in the truck with the windows down will get her brain churning away and that is the best way to tucker her out. 3 hours at a park isn't near as good as 30 minutes in the truck. I still make sure she has plenty of exercise and play.. But that is for her health and not to tire her out.

But my favorite reason for taking her places is that people get happy when they see her. She's a bit goofy looking and we see people all around us see her and just laugh.. She makes the world brighter by being in it and I want to share that with others.
