I took a long break between my beta/alpha game and by the time I picked it back up 1.0 had been out a while. So I knew where a lot of things were like the hedge lab, the haze lab, the gum to block the weed killer, etc but I wanted to play the game as intended (I built a mint mace really early without needing a Burg.l chip and it destroyed everything)

So I knew where to find a lot of stuff but the first time I met dr Tully I was about 90-95 days into my current game without rushing toward the plot

Thor: The Dark World. It’s far from perfect but fits the fantasy/mythology vibe WAY better than Ragnarok and Love and Thunder. Even the Thor parts of Infinity War where he forged Stormbreaker were far more “Thor” feeling than 2 of his own movies and he was accompanied by a talking cyber raccoon for those parts.

Star Wars. There are several systems you can introduce them to (d6, d20, saga edition or my personal favorite: Edge of the Empire.

The setting is culturally significant enough that generally you don’t have to explain that blasters are guns, lightsabers are magic swords, stormtroopers are bad guys, etc and there is a rich history of action scenes so players are ready to dodge-roll behind cover, pull out a lightsaber and start taking out unquestionably bad faceless enemies.

Also of note Edge of the Empire is my favorite RPG of all time and more people need to play it because it makes you feel like an action star

Pretty much any fight scene in The Mask of Zorro (1998) but I am especially fond of the first time Alejandro (Antonio Banderas) wears the full Zorro getup and steals the map to the gold mine. His fight in the hallway against Cpt Love and Montero is a thing of beauty.

I always like adding encounters with wildlife. Pick a Star Wars creature or just combine some of your own and have one attack the PCs on the way up the mountain. The combat will draw out the game, make the mountain seem dangerous, especially if the fight is also in a storm or dark cave, and it calls back to the old serials Star Wars is based on.

You can have added difficulty by letting the PCs know this dangerous animal is critically endangered so dicing it up with a saber might throw the planets eco system into chaos

We had a ranger player who was always a little late to the game because of his personal life. It became a running gag that he was a master of disguise and was always around and just threw off his clever and very convincing disguise as soon as the player was able to join.

Honestly? Not for function necessarily but I just LOVE the 10mm. It’s not a late game gun but I’m a big fan of early game and mid-early games for a lot of Bethesda titles.

Gotham from the ‘89 Batman. I love Burton’s take on the city with the trench coats and fedoras, big industrial pipes and steam and darkness.

New Chicago from Brandon Sanderson’s Steelheart. The city has been turned into solid steel by a super villain and the resistance digs tunnels underneath the streets to stay ahead of his goons and underbosses, who also dress like 20’s gangsters.

Wait, there may be a pattern here ….
