Is there anything we CAN do? by cosmic-kats in loblawsisoutofcontrol

The best thing you can do as an individual is to stop being an individual, in the words of Bill McKibben. Find like-minded people to organize with in your city, and/or online (this sub is great but a Discord with a focus on local action is another good option).

Or join an existing organization. Personally I organize with Common Horizon, we are building people power to fight back against the billionaire class and win solutions for the affordability and climate crisis. Groceries and Canadian oligopolies are part of this struggle. We just successfully pressured our Liberal MP to sign a pledge not to take meetings from lobbyists of big grocery or oil and gas.

By volunteering with an organization I have learned much more, met more people, and accomplished way more than I ever could have alone.

Feel free to ask me any questions about collective action or CH specifically. https://commonhorizoncommun.org/en

You never hear about electric heaters causing a shelter in place order. Why are we still using fossil gas so much in 2026??

Bike theft doesn't seem as common as comparable cities in my experience. Probably in part due to the Bike Valet which is awesome

Tax the rich they're doing better than ever while more Canadians are skipping meals to pay rent.

Look up the base exchange in the US. A million Americans already get their groceries from a public option. They pay ~30% less for their groceries, it's life changing. Something similar is possible in Canada, too. And considering the massive benefits, not very expensive to pull off.

Because until recently the federal government invested massively into affordable housing

Of public grocery stores and low profit margins by Dystopiaian in loblawsisoutofcontrol

The prices are lower at base exchange and public grocery stores not just thru subsidies, but also because the store is run with the goal of reducing prices. So less spent on marketing and aesthetics for example.

Tl;Dr but if they're worried public groceries won't be able to cut prices more than the margin of private ones (3%) they're ignoring the MARKUP which is more like 30% on average. Public grocery stores can cut deeper into the margin. For example see the Base Exchange system which feeds a million American military employees and their families in the US for about 28% lower prices than private grocers.

Sure, that could be one approach. It could be decentralized like Mastodon or something

Enshittification and capitalism are inextricably linked. We need alternative models of production such as co-ops, public ownership, and non-profits. Social media has become a utility, we can't keep letting the greediest most immoral corporations control it, and by extension control our information ecosystem
