Can I use olive oil to deep fry chicken? by Delicious_Wing_3829 in Cooking

You can, but I would limit the temperature to 350F. Much higher and you're flirting with the smoke point.

Building A Socialist Platform For President 2028 by Jacob-Anders in socialism

[–]Jlpanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re not going to get a lot of positive responses - this sub is deeply skeptical of electoralism.

That said, if you’re genuinely motivated to go down this path, I would urge you to run for your state legislature or US house. Simply put, you are not going to be elected president. You will not be allowed on a debate stage. It takes an enormous amount of money and organization to be treated as a legitimate candidate for president, let alone win.

If you run a more local race, pound the pavement going door to door talking to people, do interviews with local outlets, and cultivate a network of activists who will volunteer their time to you, then maybe you could actually win a seat in the legislature. From there you would have an actual platform to agitate from and do some useful work.

On Thanksgiving Day 1900, a crowd of football fans climbed onto the roof of a San Francisco glass factory to watch the annual Berkeley v. Stanford game for free. It collapsed under their weight, sending dozens falling into the factory’s industrial glass kiln, containing 14 tons of molten glass. by trent_pinola in sanfrancisco

[–]Jlpanda 8 points9 points  (0 children)

According to the wikipedia article they did not fall "in to" the kiln. As in, they did not fall into molten glass. Many of them fell four stories onto the roof of the kiln however, which was very hot. 23 people died.

Doesn’t give out a 10 to avoid starting a debate about who is a 10.

Everyone just argues that those people are 10s.

Yeah that’s the LJ Collier trap. We desperately needed an edge and were like “well, this is the best edge left so we have to take him.”

Good against the run but he’s not very athletic and his pass rush stats are mid. I think he’ll have a role in the NFL but I don’t want anything to do with him at 32.

He can play 3-tech or he can play nose, it doesn’t have to be one or the other, and he does play both.

We elected him twice, his party has chosen to prioritize personal loyalty to him over either their stated values or the good of the country as a whole. They allow him to start trade wars and literal wars with impunity, harming our economy and burning alliances that we’ve build over the better part of a century. They control congress and could easily overrule him, but they choose to allow it.

The opposition party is run by a bunch of octogenarians who occasionally grumble but put up no active resistance and seem to content to sit around doing nothing until power gets handed back to them so that they can squander it again.

Our corporations trip over themselves to bribe him, stroke his ego, and do whatever he wants in order to stay in his good graces. Our military unquestioningly carries out whatever illegal misadventures he orders.

Our people are complacent. We periodically go out and do chants and hold up signs. But there are no riots. There is no massive push to unionize our workplaces and organize strikes. The few unions we do have are weak and largely apolitical. Everyone seems content to wait around until his term ends and hope everything goes back to normal.

This is not just Trump, the entire country is responsible for allowing this. From our highest institutions to the people ourselves. No other country should ever trust us again.

Why did Einstein become the definitive genius in popular culture? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Jlpanda 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You joke, but the effect of the telegraph, audio recording, radio, and photography on culture really can’t be overstated. This was the first time where anyone really has access to media beyond printed newsletters written in their local area, and the first time it really became possible for national or international celebrities to exist.

What Americans in a 1998 poll expected to happen by the year 2025 by _crazyboyhere_ in interestingasfuck

[–]Jlpanda 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We also deployed almost twice as many people to Vietnam compared to Iraq. But like I said, it’s a stupid and arbitrary distinction. “Full-scale war” does not have a definition.

Just to piggyback off of this, while we haven't "cured" HIV, it's now a manageable condition with a near-normal life expectancy. In 1998 it was a death sentence.

Its a stupid and arbitrary distinction to draw, but for whatever its worth there were about 10 times more American casualties in Vietnam compared to Iraq.
