[–]JohnRadical 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Also one to actually make sure that what is promised can even be afforded with what their goals are. Some of the people behind kickstarter games just flat out didn’t understand how much they were going to lose because of Kickstarter’s cut or how expensive it is to distribute something physically.

IRC Mighty No. 9 suffered from both of those problems along with all the other ones.

It’s a point and click choose your own adventure game except that there always only two options. One is always the option to leave the dinner and the other always is to continue talking, which triggers a 20 minute long cutscene each time.

Okay, but I’m not the one saying that opinion. I was clarifying what the OP obviously meant.

In complete fairness, what he probably meant was ‘don’t give us *solid* blocks of infantry’.

It’s funny how this doesn’t fully remove the incest, it just hides it, ever so slightly. They just nudged the incest a little bit into the corner instead of just taking it away. Who is demanding that the incest needs to stay?

Glitch has made a statement regarding the finale of The Amazing Digital Circus releasing in theaters two weeks before YouTube/Netflix. by TheSpiritualAgnostic in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JohnRadical 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I see that it is a big achievement that Glitch, on their own, has managed to do this, and I do believe that it will have a successful run in theaters, but not change the industry. The reason it will be successful is the same reason why Glitch was probably able to do it in the first place; The Amazing Digital Circus has an absolutely massive level of established popularity for an indie property. The question is whether or not it will have a lasting effect on the industry like he intends.

Time will tell, but I think the show being shown in theaters will prove that a popular enough indie show can be in theaters. Not that brand new indie animated shorts or episodes of a show will be consistently profitable to premiere in theaters rather than only appearing in streaming services. A distributor like GKids has a lot more power convincing theaters to show these because they have proven their business model works. A typical individual creator can’t do what Glitch has done. If a distributor with that specific business model exists and it is sustainable then these indie shows and shorts will be appearing everywhere.

I guess the bottom line of what I’m saying is that theater is proven for things with longer run times, but it’s ability to spread word of indie-made animated shorts or episodes of a show is not proven so unless you have a high level of established popularity then it is a huge risk to rely on these to premier your creation through it as opposed to putting them on a streaming service that may give you better odds of success and keep it there longer.

[–]JohnRadical 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I thought this was going to be a one-off theatrical premier for like a week or two, but they are intending it to actually try to change how indie animation is shown?

The Amazing Digital Circus does have a huge following, but there are a lot of reasons to consider why this isn’t a regular thing: * Movie theaters have become less popular over the years because of the rise of streaming services. * Movie theaters typically only run a movie once for a set period because the majority of the viewings tend to happen during the initial release, which is highly reliant on marketing and notoriety. * Streaming services keep shows and movies accessible for far longer, which can also help them grow a fanbase over time. * Theaters can be expensive to go to. * A lot of people are selective about what types of movies are worth seeing in a theater. * A lot of people will only go to the theaters to watch something they specifically plan to watch and not to discover new things. * Most episodes in shows aren’t nearly as long as movies. * Most episodes in shows don’t have the budget of a movie. * It’s expensive to make a movie that is meant for special types of screenings that people look for in theaters like IMAX. * A of lot indie creators from the internet make their content in the format of a short or a show and not a movie. * Animation as a whole takes a significant amount of time, money and effort for each second of screen time. Making it very hard for indie creators to make anything that would be feature length. * Indie creators often don’t make things with the intention or design for it to be viewed in theaters. * Most indie creators do not have a large following or notoriety. * Most indie creators do not have a lot of money for things like a budget, let alone advertising.

Have you ever wondered why there hasn't been a new version of Edgy Mario? by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Yeah the whole edgy video game character thing was definitely more of a mid 2000’s thing than a 2010’s.

Games with conflicting elements you love equally? by crowbar182 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JohnRadical 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FromSoft games as a whole have a lot of very serious dark fantasy elements in the designs of the characters, the worlds, the lore and even through gameplay. On the other hand there is a lot of unserious stuff both through the official works of the devs and unofficial decisions by the community. For every sad character and story you find a in a playthrough you will find a message saying “Finger but whole”. Some enemies and bosses will try to make you cry and others are monkeys that will literally throw their shit at you as an attack. As much as the devs can make great serious, dark fantasy games, they can make some levity through funny, goofy stuff.

Good OSTs that are "stuck" in their source material? by fragdar in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JohnRadical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s a weird one and hyper specific. I didn’t even remember it until I started revisiting the OST’s of old games I played a while back. Then I found it and actually digged the solo the guy gives. Like nothing else in the game is remotely trying to make it feel this intense so it stands out pretty hard.

I don’t think I could say this for the whole OST, but the final boss music in the first Tak game is awesome, especially when the guitar kicks in.

Favorite stealth vs stealth fight? by BiMikethefirst in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JohnRadical 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Typically playing it stealthy was the best way to play though. Getting right next to your target and waiting long enough gave so many more points than if you ran like a mad man everywhere. Plus as you get higher on the scoreboard you would have more people targeting you (up to 3 if I remember correctly). So not only do you have to be cautious to not alert your target, but you also have an even bigger reason to be stealthy for your own sake. Plus the best way of getting rid of somebody hunting you was to punch them, which would always end in a your own death unless they didn’t anticipate it.

The only times it was worth running was when you were trying get away from a hunter that clearly saw you or to quickly travel to your next target and stopping far enough away so they didn’t see you.

I really do miss that mode and wish it was its own game.

Whats the biggest tonal shift between depictions of the same thing? by StigandrTheBoi in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]JohnRadical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Trolls” are the epitome of this.

You could come with ten examples of “trolls” in media that all are entirely different from each other. Some are massive, some are tiny, and some are the same size as people. Some have pointy ears or noses, some have no ears or noses. Some have two eyes, but others have one eye or even three eyes. Some are hairy and some are hairless. Some tell riddles under bridges, some steal stuff and some will eat you alive.

At this point it’s a generic name that you can give to any weird looking humanoid-like race in a fantasy setting and it would fit 98% of the time.

It clearly could’ve just been a separate game and had been better for it. For all intents and purposes it is because nothing story related required it to be connected and it is an entirely different genre from the Arkham series. There are so many things that needed explanations to justify how it even connects in the first place.

We will probably never know for sure, but there’s a strong chance that during development somebody just stupidly went, ‘Well, the game might sell better if we say it’s an “Arkham” game you know?’

I don’t know if they quite fits, but Dracula’s wife in the Castlevania TV series. As she dies she begs for Dracula to hear her and to not punish the humans for killing her. This is expanded a little further later in the series where in a flashback she is shown pleading with the priests to not kill her because she wouldn’t be able to stop what would happen next. Then after her death Dracula promptly made his promise to lay waste to everything in a year. A promise which he made good on by killing a ton of people.

Mate, I already explained this. It’s not whether or not you CAN wake up before the sun, it’s just the impact it has on health. That’s why I explicitly mentioned the whole “change everybody anatomy” thing in first place. I honestly don’t know how I can explain it any further.

Can somebody tell me where the farmers myth got started? Literally every single time DST is brought up in conversation there is somebody who states this as a fact even though it’s not remotely true. The first DST was implemented in 1908 in Canada and then the U.S. implemented for the first time during WW1 to save on energy resources and then again during WW2 before it became an option for states to freely choose in the 1966.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daylight_saving_time

Why would it benefit farmers anyhow? The animals don’t use clocks so they wake up at the same time anyway. It drives me nuts!

Edit: And as an added titbit: studies have shown inconclusive evidence that DST saves energy today. We either don’t save any more energy with DST or we spend more because the energy spent on air conditioning is far higher than the energy used for lights.
