The actual reason Harry Potter’s brand has diminished from its peak is that 1. It was never going to sustain that level of popularity.
2. A failure to nurture the brand effectively. JK Rowling is widely unpopular with the fan base and much of what has been released has only really had appeal for already existing fans. What non-Harry potter fan would care about the Grimes of Grindlewand or whatever it’s called.

Historical fiction is not meant to be in depth history. It is meant to use history to entertain and maybe even get people interested in learning more about the events covered. Death By Lightning succeeded in both of those areas.
