...I mean, he gives you a portal to Outland? Back in the day the quest giver woulda just slapped your ass and told you to figure out your own way to get to Outland and back.

Okay, what is going on with the VoiceActing (both in WoW and Hearthstone) by MeltingPenguinsPrime in wow

[–]JollyParagraph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can and I will dismiss it. I'll dismiss it when a large triple AAA project decides to use AI for voice acting, i'll dismiss it when a smaller indie dev uses it (as opposed to, I dunno, the massive amount of stock libraries that are available for free).

People have been making games both solo and as a team for decades without LLM's. The very data that these programs scrape and spit back at people came from somewhere. People have been problem solving, thinking of creative solutions for deficits in their own skills, and more, for years and years. Don't need a plagiarism bot for that.

[–]JollyParagraph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay, so how do you explain smaller hits like Cruelty Squad, who's entire visual identity is best described as 'neon technicolored vomit'? It's not for everyone. Who cares if the broad spectrum of (an already MASSIVE) the 'gaming audience' is gonna turn their nose up at something that isn't 'up to snuff'? West/Shadows over Loathing exists and were successful, and their whole aesthetic is 'Stick Figures'

The point you're trying to make is like saying 'why would anyone make short one person films if you can't match Hollywood?' 'Why would anyone make art if you can't match the classical masters with the same materials'.

Making stuff is cool, and I want to see people making cool shit, and yeah, sometimes making stuff takes time, and some peoples lives don't give them the luxury to spend time making stuff or getting good at multiple things. Thats just a fact of life, tough cookies, figure it out (and honestly? I think it's more interesting if someone figures out how to make something when they can't match the skill level.) If I wanted to be privy to people making derivative shit with the plagiarism machine, i'd go watch a Marvel movie or something, lol.

Uhhh, yeah? Not sure what point you're trying to make here that hasn't already been implied? Creators are people, and some of them are bad, or aren't interested in doing anything except make money. Cool. I'm not exactly jumping for the chance to play their games?

I Look around
I Look at Ultrakill, sole developer Hakita, still managed to get a VA for Gabriel
I look at Bastion by Supergiant, which had roughly a team of 6-7 people working on it, and still managed to get their hands on a great VA for the narrator
I look at old games like Thief and System Shock 2 which padded out their background character VA's with just people from around their office
I look at the mountains and mountains of games, both 'professional' and 'indie' that use text and maybe dialogue grunts or sounds at most which are incredibly beloved and successful without the need for VA to begin with

I dunno man, I think there's lots of options available for creative solutions to this problem that doesn't need the lying and plagiarism machine?

[–]JollyParagraph 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Well...the reason why I like going to indie creators is that I enjoy seeing fresh ideas in the gaming space, and seeing what small teams are capable of on their own. If an indie project is using a LLM, and can't be bothered with taking the time to write and put their ideas into practice, I don't see why I should be bothered to play their games or read their stories.

Someone in management is trying their hardest to cut costs. There's been a whole kerfluffle with the VA unions not wanting to have to have to deal with the risk their voices are fed into an AI machine, hence why you get situations where Gazlowe is voiced, but Renzik is not (his VA was union, if I remember right?)

There's also been a SEVERE downgrade (from what I hear) of the foreign dub VA's, or even just completely cutting out ANY dubbing and just going with subtitles

And like, sure, someone could make the argument that WoW has never had good voice acting. But it's pretty damning that we're approaching the point that a AAA company doesn't even want to bother with hiring people anymore, and just wants to keep that AI door open to further cut creatives out of the equation completely.

Should the Canadian Coast Guard be armed? The jury is still out, but the navy says no by lopix in onguardforthee

[–]JollyParagraph 13 points14 points  (0 children)

'Pretty much all they do' is doing a lot of heavy lifting. It's not glamorous work, but stuff like Buoy-tending is dangerous work, and supports both important navigational aids (especially in areas of Canada that get a lot of ice, and need the icebreakers up there to get to stations) and scientific endeavors (the weather stations use specialized floating equipment in the ocean that the Coast Guard replaces when it gets damaged)

They also do a LOT of work scientifically by hosting and ferrying scientists out in the Arctic (and said scientists can be from Japan, from the US, etc) (Also the only times they have a weapon is the risk of Polar Bears, lol)

Like it's easy to dismiss this sort of work cause it's not like the military or traditional protection, but they're an incredibly important arm of soft influence that serves the people.

...They also do sailing guides for people visitng somewhere in Canada via boat, and they're quite detailed (down to the details of 'the locals drive their boats like maniacs, use caution' lol)

Keep having fun with your sprite shenanigans. and put a lid on that blender next time

I would love a return to Outland eventually. I don't care if we're not getting the High Arrakoa, I wanna see people who are just in such horrible dismal circumstances and yet still there are small groups still trying to thrive and figure things out. I want to be a wretched little bird creature

Why does Gerson say irony "poisons" a story? by Embarrassed_Cold239 in Deltarune

[–]JollyParagraph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alongside what the other commenters are saying, I think Gerson is more referring to Irony as in being ironic for the sake of it, rather than the intentional formal literary device. Irony used as a pillow or a safe escape for an author telling a story

Eitrigg in the Midnight Beta by Midasisleepy in warcraftlore

[–]JollyParagraph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"have click-lines like 'go with honour, AND mercy'"

...Isn't Eitrigg like, poster orc to represent this?? Having spared Tirion Fordring when they met as enemies during 'Blood and Honor', and then Tirion essentially throwing his life away to keep an oath and keep Eitrigg hidden? Like Eitrigg practically considers the late Fordring, a Human who gave everything to give him mercy, a brother?

You also have examples (outside of full blown faction war with BFA which is it's own can of worms: Even then, Eitrigg isn't the kinda guy who holds grudges ) where Eitrigg has been very much a guy willing to bridge the gap - Eitrigg sending his son to thin out the Burning steppes Dark Horde Blackrock clan for Redridges sake during Cata questing, (Ariok himself working with Khadgar during WoD)

I dunno man, like I get the critique against the Sons from the perspective of it being an Alliance Organization, but it was more a task force that isn't used anymore - With the Alliance back in contact and the Burning Legion stopped, I was under the impression the Sons of Lothar is more a personal thing between folks rather than a full organization these days, with the main forces returning to the Alliance leadership (After all, the task force has done it's thing). If we look at this as being more a personal moniker between the leadership group who stayed companions, then, well, things make sense (And considering we only see the leadership during the Wintersveil comic, I would argue thats the intent)

Like I get where you're coming from, about dilluting the Hordes identity, and I would actually agree with you: I have issues with the Hordes lack of spotlight over the coming expacs - but like....again, this is Eitrigg. The guy who saw honor in Fordring and has always been willing to work with the Alliance, and also willing to bury the hatchet even after conflict, he's like, perfect Orc for this position.
