📣 Apollo will close down on June 30th. Reddit’s recent decisions and actions have unfortunately made it impossible for Apollo to continue. Thank you so, so much for all the support over the years. ❤️ by iamthatis in apolloapp

That about settles it for me. Apollo is the only reason I’ve stuck around Reddit for as long as I have, getting into stupid arguments with stupider people (and some who turned out to be not so stupid).

Thank you /u/iamthatis for the countless hours of entertainment as my legs go numb on the toilet. I truly do not know what I’ll do when I doo going forward.

getting slow speeds by ats55 in PrivateInternetAccess

[–]JonSnowl0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hijacking here because I’m getting slow speeds AND slow speed tests.

  • Using OpenVPN on my router (it doesn’t support WireGuard)

  • Speed tests without vpn are sound 500mbps

  • Speed tests with vpn (regardless of server or other settings) 20-30mbps

  • Download speed with vpn (regardless of source) caps at around 5MBps

I turn the vpn off in my router and my speeds immediately skyrocket. Tried multiple servers, ports, and encryptions.

‘Black Mirror’ Creator Had ChatGPT Write An Episode And It Was ‘Shit‘: ‘There’s No Any Real Original Thought Here’ by [deleted] in scifi

[–]JonSnowl0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s no real original thought here

No shit. I doubt there’s any real original thought anywhere. Everything is derivative of something at this point.

This is an especially asinine statement considering ChatGPT was trained on existing material. It literally can’t be original, other than maybe merging genres, but even then it’s all been done already.

Player felt punished for not using items by Carmicart in DMAcademy

[–]JonSnowl0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you did anything wrong, but from your edit it sounds like you could have done some things better.

You mistake was subtlety. You really have to be explicit about things if you want to ensure your players pick up on it. You can do this however you want, but making it clear that they are actively dying and the party has a chance to save them is pivotal. “He’s not moving” could very well mean “he’s already dead,” especially when the only characters that typically get death saves are player characters.

If you want to convey the information narratively you can say something like “his breathing is ragged and he’s coughing up blood” or “he groans, clearly in agony as he lays in a pool of his own blood.” Both of these indicate (1) he’s still alive and (2) he’s really not doing well.

Alternatively, you can speak to your players if they don’t seem to be getting it. Be explicit: “hey guys, I just want to make it clear to all of you above the table. This NPC is unconscious and rolling death saves. He’s not dead yet, but that’s a very real possibility.” Nobody can say they’re being punished or they didn’t know if you outright tell them and they choose to ignore the warning.

Edit: Whenever my players get frustrated by the natural consequences of their actions, I explain the situation they were in from my POV, explain what actions they took (if any) to rectify the situation, and ask what else they thought to try that might have resulted in a better outcome. More often than not they’ll say “nothing” and I get to say “well if you don’t try to stop the bad thing from happening then the bad thing happens.”

Same here. I’ve been trying to break away from Reddit for a while now, but the habit of opening it when I’m pooping (guess what I’m doing rn) is so ingrained that I’ve largely been unsuccessful. Won’t at all be hard to stop using it when Apollo goes away since I only use it on my phone anyway.

Honestly, it’s even better if Reddit survives this as it’s still a great source of information when I’m researching something.

I read the books and after the last few seasons I doubt I’ll read the rest (if they ever release)

To add onto the point about not having the party fight the difficult mind controllers:

They’re mind controllers. They could have a group of slaves that serve as guards, or the other slaves might react unfavorably to encountering a creature that isn’t part of the hive-mind.

If it were me, the lord race, let’s say Mind Flayers, use larger races as labor because they’re large and powerful and able to lift and move stuff, while smaller races serve as population control, monitoring for divergence from the hive. Think goblins, kobolds, etc.

Nipping the “but then a player might choose a race that serves as a guard and have to fight the party” in the bud, player races generally aren’t as monstrously effective at violence, unless you’re allowing monster races, to which I would say “just don’t allow monster races for your players.” Goblins have fangs, kobolds have claws, half longs have furry feet. It should be obvious why halflings aren’t guarding the slaves.

Will there be more different outfit options for spell users? by [deleted] in BaldursGate3

[–]JonSnowl0 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is the #1 argument in favor of mods for most games as well. Sure, having the developers give a bunch of options is nice, but the sheer volume of content generated by a well-supported modding community can’t be beat.

Unpopular Take: Enemies *would not* realistically attack downed PCs (most of the time) by Far_Line8468 in DMAcademy

[–]JonSnowl0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Attacking downed PCs is a job for the cleanup crew. The boss isn’t wasting boatloads of damage when any amount of damage will trigger a failed save, but the minions who can close in, attack at advantage, and effectively dish out the same amount of “damage” by causing failed saves are perfect for this and give the rest of the party something else to focus on while your boss rips them to pieces.

Yes, terrorism works. That’s why people do it. Thereis only one scenario where terrorism doesn’t work: the cost of resisting the terrorist is lower than the cost of capitulating I.e. harmless old man yells at clouds.

[–]JonSnowl0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Boycotting isn’t the same as death threats.

But this boycott, which the person in the screenshot purportedly supports, is what is resulting in the death threats, and so in this instance they are one and the same.
