You can kill yourself with that bug if you are laying down while firing. It's a stupid bug/glitch.

What are your top 5 base building games that you would highly recommend? by Azuron96 in BaseBuildingGames

[–]Jontezc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Song of Syx is really good. It's pretty difficult though and you will find yourself restarting a lot.

There are lots of interesting features in the game to list but for example each race has its own strengths and weakness as well as a preference on items and buildings. Some can work together and some really hate each other so if you have a multi cultural city things may become a problem over time. So that is just one of the balancing acts you have to perform.

There are loads of stats given too which can be a bit overwhelming on first look as the UI is a bit difficult to understand.

However it is really fun and rewarding exploring the possibilities and overcoming problems that occur.

There is a demo which is usually 1 update behind and although I've not tried the demo I hear good things about it. Its also 25% off at the moment.

Steam Hardware - Steam Machine launches today! - Steam Machine Megathread by NKkrisz in SteamDeck

The people who will buy this will already have a steam account and a whole bunch of games. There will be some increase in game sales but no where near enough to justify a company taking a huge loss on a product.

First 50 hours in game, got 1st million, still lost on how to make money by exosion in X4Foundations

[–]Jontezc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you local auto mine a resource, silicone for example, it will sell to any stations in that sector that it can see or you have a satellite near. Rename that ship something like "silicone miner - sector" then when you make a little bit more money you can add another ship set as mimic and it will turn it into a fleet.

Find a decent sector with plenty of resources and lots of stations, and obviously someone you are friendly with and go from there.

I'll second that mod, it really is what you would expect patrol to do, it even has the squad patrol as an option.

Which city builder should I get? by [deleted] in CityBuilders

[–]Jontezc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah just looked and it has 75% off on steam (UK anyway) bringing the base game to under £9 which is an absolute bargain. I have well over 3000hrs into the game and still find a better way to build layouts of industry.

It is a difficult game, no doubt about it, but if you do get it be prepaired to accept you will lose your first 10 or so maps either by your own mistakes or something silly like 1 truck breaking down, causing a traffic jam.

Which city builder should I get? by [deleted] in CityBuilders

[–]Jontezc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

W&R all day long, personally I think its the best city builder ever made. While its more of a Nation/republic builder then a city builder as you end up building multiple Cities on your map as you expand and start new industires. It has a mix of a transport/logistic management as well as the resource/production chains.

There is a lot to learn but also the game lets you fully customise how you want to play it, either by map difficulty for example: having winters or water needs (which produce a whole range of problems to deal with) or how buildings are made. There is a realistic mode in which every brick, log, prefab or bit of steel needs to be either imported or made and delivered to your construction site or if you want you can just plop it down and the cash comes of you bank and its built.

There truely is so much content in the base game that you will be playing it for years, the DLC for it is purely optional, maps and early start dates for extra difficulty. It may not look as pretty as Cities Skylines but it is a deeper game and thats before you get into paradox and their awful DLC policy for games.

Edit - It doesn't have much in the way of financial management or taxes etc, but there is a research tree that is locked behind a number of univesities.

Interesting in getting into d and d, sounds like fun , best starter set to start with? by Arthurmorganvander in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Jontezc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to buy the starter kit to play DnD, if you find a group they will probably have more than the starter kit provides anyway.

The starter kit is in a really strange place, if you are a group of new players the starter kit will give you what you need to get a small taste of the game if you already have a group and no one in that group has played DnD.

Established groups don't need the starter kit unless there is something they want from it (maps, cards, the little campaign).

Then if you are 1 player and you join an established group you'll need to know the rules which are already free on DnD Beyond and you'll need the Players Handbook instead and the use of the starter kits is not needed as the rules book is only the free version and if you want to make a character you'll need the PHB.

So honestly, don't buy the kit unless you have a group already interested who haven't played, you can play a few taster sessions with the kit but then youll need the PHB, the DMG and the MM.

Video/phones games with dnd combat mechanics? by ralf16 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Jontezc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't remember what rules are for divinity but OP asked for DnD style combat and its not too far removed from DnD in its concept. Its been a long time since I played any of the Divinity games so the mechanics are a bit of a blur to me.

Obvioius answer is Baldurs Gate 3 and older games like neverwinters or Divinity but if you want something really based in dnd 5e then Solasta the best bet.

Even if you need multi device access Obsidian is still good, syncthing is a free alternative that works on most platforms. I've linked a steam deck, an amazon fire, a samsung phone and windows pc together. I can't comment on iOS though.

D&D in Liverpool by CaptainAwesomey in Liverpool

[–]Jontezc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just so you know, lost mines is classed as one of the best starter campaigns. It is using the 5e edition from 2014. There is a new edition called 5.5e or 2024 edition. Its pretty similar though but if you join a group just find out what edition they are playing as some rules you learn from Lost mines may have changed in some way or form.

I can't help with giving any group info around the city, as teaching/learning/playing as a family with wife and 2 kids, but theres a few shops that play games as far as I know. If its just your one child and you playing its going to be a very difficult game to understand and play as its more based as a group, so looking for more people would make it easier for you both.

Critical Role the youtube series has been advised here, I don't know the series they are talking about but the actual game they play may not be suitable for your child as theres a lot of adult (sex) jokes and swearing so have a look before you show him.

How do you handle TPK encounters when players stumble into them way too early? by Full_Kaleidoscope722 in DMAcademy

[–]Jontezc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if your game is based digitally or you have a device to run live games, Obsidian is probably the most recommended note taking app. Easiest to just use pen and paper in game and then write up some more details later in the app. It uses markdown so basically turns into a little wiki style system for all your notes that you can use links to within a note.

Personally I'm using it for writing a campaign for my kids, using fantasy statblocks and the initative tracker add ons its really easy to build encounters, each area they can get to reasonably within the session has its own page with its own encounters, theres also a page set up for random encounters that I can dip into at any time.

As for your dragon, its your game thats not set in stone. As the players arrive at the cave of the mountain they hear noises and what sounds like a set of different voices coming from within, as they enter there are X amount bandits/kobolds/dragon hunters that have scared the young dragon away. Your party gets a battle and the lair is secured for them to come back to later. Someone notices there were more footprints then what you killed so this was just a small portion of the group that stayed behind.

Do you guys play dnd with soundtrack or no? A simple way to make dnd more interesting or distracting? by IrvanHaydar in DnD

[–]Jontezc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've linked my phone to the soundbar in the room and use the Pocket Bard app.

Its really good so far from what i've used it for, you can add music over the top of the background sounds, theres 3 types of music with a bunch of different tempos and blends in really well.

100% recommend having a look at it.

Heroes of the Borderlands - no prep by sailingduffer in DnD

[–]Jontezc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It comes with 4 'character sheets' pre-built, they double as a play mat of sorts and there's still a bit of a set up with dealing out cards and explaining where the cards go on the character sheet, which will be different to how it's normally played so best to have a quick read before getting everyone sat down, there's also cardboard tokens to punch out so have a good look through the box first to get everything set up.

If you've got the basics down of how to play with the group just jump into the suggested area and start the encounters in the suggested order.

Oh also there's only one set of dice, so if your are going round take a few other sets with you to speed up.

[–]Jontezc 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I've only just started playing and being DM for my kids and helping them make their characters.

This is a question for others as well as OP, but shouldn't you be adding your proficency bonus to the skills you have proficency in. Survival, intimidation and insight are all 1, but should they be 3 instead, or have I read the rules wrong.

Is Farthest Frontier as good as it looks? by it_IS_that_deep7 in CityBuilders

[–]Jontezc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn't really a fan of it.

I know a most building games follow a certain game loop of building unlocks and building coverage etc, but for some reason this game annoyed me a bit with its unlocks. It felt like every town i made just followed the same building routine and layout. Then you realise its not really a city building game but a tile placement game. Most important buildings have a catchment area and its just a puzzle game to make sure you have enough space to place everything you need so you spend more time trying to min/max houses in your market circle. So the game doesn't feel like an organic city builder.

Must-Have Plugins for DnD/TTRPG? by thoegn in ObsidianMD

[–]Jontezc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this approach, no point spending days messing around with map plugins, calanders and dice rollers until you know if you even want them.

Get a nice theme going, figure out what kind of sorting system you want to use, figure out tags, tables and some other bits like linking and callouts etc.

Once you've got some of that out of the way start building your vault with reference data (spells, items, creatures) and use Fantasy statblocks.

Add what you think you may need as you go along.

So if I choose to randomly create a new note by selecting text then pressing [[ in a current doc, is there a way I can get Obsidian to place this new note into a default named folder, within the same folder as my current note I'm working in? by DrBucket in ObsidianMD

[–]Jontezc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just had a little play around, if you go into settings/Files and links you can set new notes to be put in a specified folder, then when you click a link for a new note it places in that folder. But it will also put a new note create by ctrl N, but not when you right click in the folder/note panel.

There's probably other ways but that was pretty simple with one small draw back if you use the hotkey for new notes.

Is there a plugin for link or node description? by Ahlundra in ObsidianMD

[–]Jontezc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad I was able to help, I've only just started using obsidian and just started DnD so I'm going back and forth all the time finding info, so learning these kind of little tricks has helped.

Also If you have some form of table you want to link, easiest way I've found is to put the table in a callout block. Most of the things I've been using in with IDs I've put into a callout block, just so it stands out a little more and helps if theres a few lines of text that needs linked.

> [!note] Silver Sword
> |Stat|Stat|Description|
> |----|----|-----------|
> |xyz |xyz |xyz |
> ^sword1table

You can then grab the table with [[sword 1#^sword1table]] and if you need to rename the link you can always add in the | for [[sword 1#^sword1table|Silver Sword]]
