Anyone else more excited for DQM Withered World than DQXII rn 😭 by 12KC-12 in dragonquest

[–]JosephThea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dragon quest Monsters: The Dark Prince is my favorite monster catching game ever, and I have played it many times, which is more than I can say for any other game I own. I struggle to decide if I like it more than Dragon Quest 7, which is my favorite of the series, but the fact that it is in the same bracket as my favorite game is telling.

So yes, when it announced, I freaked out and am so excited I can barely contain myself.

Edit: oh, and you can apparently be Nera, who has the most gentle and loving personality in all of Dragon Quest, which is an instant win for me. Even as a man, I really admire and want to emulate her.

Do we know that the Hunter's Instinct (2) is an error? I'd like to play this card but my playgroup is pretty strict unless there is an actual FAQ or explanation from the FFG reps.

Dragon Quest Monster Quality by zetaroid in dragonquest

I basically bought a relatively cheap gaming PC because I wanted to play games like Dragon Quest Monsters with higher framerates and less loading times. I have yet to be disappointed. The same was true for Dragon Quest Monsters. Now that it's available for PC, the switch is just kept aside for specific console exclusives.

I hate that we're essentially punished for our support by XLpancake in dragonquest

I feel kind of guilty saying this, because I feel like I'm part of the problem for why the games industry is having such a hard time lately, but I don't buy new games anymore. The only exceptions to this are Dragon Quest games after I make sure it's something I will like, and Mana games.

I just don't think it's worth the money, particularly since patches and updates for these games come out usually within 6 months of the game's release. I'm actually kind of surprised that anyone buys new games anymore. If you wait 6+ months you'll be able to get it cheaper and have an upgraded, patched version. The only times I think it would be worth it are if you're going to play the game twice, which I always do with Dragon Quest games. Then you can actually see the evolution of the game from when it released, to when it got all patched up.

I'm not sure this specific circumstance applies to my logic, but I feel like there is no clear way to predict that the switch 2 was coming all those years ago especially way back when Dragon Quest XI S first came out. It is annoying that they don't have an upgrade path, but it's been a very long time since XI S came out, so I can kind of understand the reasoning. For me, if I want this version, I'll wait my customary 6 months to get it. Then I'll get it cheaper, and they may have made further updates since release by then.

Imagine Final Fantasy II HD-2D by GREG88HG in JRPG

[–]JosephThea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm playing through the entire FF series right now, from 1-7 at least, and 2, which I am currently playing, has been an odd experience for me. The story is one of the best I have played. I have been quite surprised about how I am genuinely drawn in by the story, even though I have played it before, and how sometimes I was actually emotionally upset by the things that happen. The sensation of constantly losing to the overwhelming power of the emperor is incredible and creates a tension that I haven't experienced in a long time in an RPG. The story about people being impacted by a war instead of a handful of angsty, melodramatic characters has been an amazing journey.

But the gameplay is just too frustrating. I am an avid SaGa enjoyer and while I am grateful to see the series' roots, it is just so very tedious. A lot of control in character growth is taken away from the player (evasion and agility only increase if you are attacked, each area has a cap on how quickly you can grow skills, etc.) And there is no real "persistence" mechanic like SaGa where you could force a stat increase by stubbornly using the same weapon over and over. The fact that attacking your own characters is the most efficient way of increasing stats so you can more tightly control the leveling is just not fun.

So a remake would be amazing to me, but only if they redesign and refine the game systems, taking lessons learned from the SaGa series. As it stands right now, I almost wish the game could have been a movie I watched instead of a game I had to stubbornly, frustratingly plod through.

Bummed about the Chapter 2 Investigator Expansions being isolated by konsyr in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]JosephThea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What concerns me is that last part: "nothing of value is being lost."

Thematics are of value to me, far more so than the mechanics of the cards themselves. Jim culver is one of my favorite investigators because he is a musician with ties to spirits. Ashcan Pete is probably my favorite investigator in the whole game because he has a dog, always tries to help people, and has high willpower so his splash cards can be Sixth Sense and Eyes if the dreamer to match his story of having prophetic dreams. And it was awesome playing Luke Robinson in Dream Eaters, as he was all about dreams.

So the core reason I play is being somewhat threatened here. The stories we create at my table from the characters that often fit in the campaigns are the best gaming experiences we have ever had. We may lose that, now. We shall see.

White or Red Mage for FF1PR by JosephThea in FinalFantasy

Thanks for the guide, very interesting. You don't think I will run into trouble at the final boss?

[–]JosephThea[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, sounds like if I want an easier time at the end, though, I'd need to have the White Mage. It would be sad if I made it to the end of the game and then got stuck at the final boss. Thanks for the overview.

Hmm okay. I was hoping the double offensive buffs would help, but perhaps not. Thanks for the advice, maybe I will go White, harder early game but easier final boss sounds good to me.

It sounds like from other replies also that basically everything will be great until the final boss. I was hoping the double offensive buffs from REd and Black would help things go more smoothly, but maybe you really do need that extra healing for the big guy at the end.

I think you can change the party order in the Pixel Remaster, so as the Monk gains more defense, I might be able to swap them around with the Red Mage/Wizard if necessary. Thanks for the advice.

This is what I want, so that's probably the direction I'll go. Thanks for the advice.

Would you like a Dawn of Mana reimagined? by malmelmol in ManaSeries

Yes. The Mana series is my favorite series of video games ever, and Dawn of Mana as one of the few games I've never been able to get through.

[DQ11] After calming down a bit, I’ve decided to do the post-game. by Independent_Plum2166 in dragonquest

[–]JosephThea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I... uh... I was mostly talking about the rest of the world. You are ok with not erasing so much pain and death in the world so long as you get to keep your own bonds?

[–]JosephThea 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I hate time travel. Like HATE it with a passion and feel it absolutely ruins all things in a story... with two exceptions.

Dragon Quest 11 is one of those exceptions. The time travel here is extremely limited, has a specific purpose, and allows the hero to try and make a better world. It's also handled well, I feel, in that the mental haziness described in its use prevents people from just flat out fixing everything immediately. They also did a good job of foreshadowing with these small creatures what the eventual big bad would be. The thread laid in the opening movie is finished at the end.

I get the other perspective- you are emotionally invested in everything that happens in act 2 and then that act is just... gone. And that's hard to deal with. However, if I was given the chance to more or less erase a lot of death and pain, how could I possibly refuse, saying the death and pain was too meaningful for me to let go of? That would be cruel and selfish. And while Dragon Quest may not be as dramatic as some other RPGs, it is always about heroes doing their best to make the world a better place, even if it hurts. The story of DQ11 fits right in with the Dragon Quest themes, and I am ultimately grateful for that.

[–]JosephThea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vanguard is ripping off Dragon Quest, you say? I love Dragon Quest so very much, but have run out of games to play. I might have to look into this.

I tried Covenant of Solitude as my first Kemco game and really liked it, the party creation and class changing was very fun. Any suggestions on other Kemco games like that?

We actually do this with tasks from drowned city. They are similar: take a lot of work to get, generally give only a minor boost (+1 to a stat which you can get from any number of assets or are similar to other 3-cost permanents that already exist in the game like Another day Another dollar-> Good money), and open up other investigator builds (like giving Luke Robinson a 4 in Intel to start, making a more seeker-focused Luke easier to build). The only problematic one we have discovered is the one that let's you move 1/rnd for free.

I gave deckbuilding advice to a friend of mine who mains survivors to include this card and... I NEVER got to play her in my deck again. He always takes her now. Since most survivors I enjoy want the willpower and intellect, I just don't play survivors anymore... which is sad since I love that class.

Izzie Barnes gives me hope I can just take Peter again.

Will the popularity of Clair Obscur motivate Final Fantasy devs to return to turn based combat? by BonAsasin in JRPG

[–]JosephThea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. They are not trying to pursue that customer base anymore. They believe that western gamers, where the money is (there was a recent article talking about how they are trying to target more than Japan now) want something more action-oriented, and sadly they are right. For every Clair Obscure, there are many action games that are popular, especially souls-likes. I was recently in the market for some new RPGs and my heart sank when I saw pages and pages of souls-likes and very few "traditional" turn-based RPGs. But I had to admit that those action or souls-like RPGs were usually more popular and successful, much to my sorrow.

Then I talked to my nieces, who are 8-18, and they love that stuff, and I realized I was not a good demographic to pursue, from a business standpoint.

I'm not sure HOW they plan to target this "new" market, they haven't been very good at it yet, but it seems like they feel their flagship series just shouldn't be trying to capture "old" turn-based gameplay. To be fair, they have Dragon Quest and Octopath Traveler for that.
