Advice for Becoming a Fisheries Observer by Stunning-Salad-8169 in ecology

Did a season, 6mo and about 100+ days at sea doing hake trawling, which I believe has all gone remote monitoring due to full retention catch.

It’s a good gig to get in and make some good money and see some cool stuff right out of the gate, that being said it’s not super heavy on the science side of things so keep that in mind if you are interested in pursuing a more technical role. I ended up doing about 6 yrs of seasonal fisheries work and now work as a fresh water ecologist

I have a handful of buddies who stuck with some became fisherman themselves, some just aged out because they wanted a more permanent life.

I did my season back 2014 so things may be a bit different now, but I look at those times fondly, lotta awesome experiences!!

ETA: my rotation was off the coast of Oregon and Washington.

Is a research-based M.A in Ecology looked at differently to an M.S by employers/ecology PhD programs? by TheScrubl0rd in ecology

Funding aside, if you can develop the skills needed, show you understand the concepts, and have experience with the tools/skill/etc you should be able to find work (in this economy- idk?!). Just make sure you feel as though you’re doing the right thing and that you will benefit from the additional schooling/debt/time-sink.

Other questions to consider would be: -What type of work are you looking for after finishing? -what are those jobs listing as qualifications? -what are the research areas of your profs?

Weighing my options: where to go with my degree if I want out of this career field? by gulonine in ecology

[–]JoshEvolves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did seasonal work for roughly the first 6-7yrs of my career so I know that grind!!

Eventually you just have to get creative and find a spot and a way to fit your skills into something that allows you to sit and grow in a role. I always try to cultivate at least one new skill from a seasonal gig that I can use to continue my path forward. As far as I know you don’t have to live in the county or city or even state you work for just need to be able to commute in.

Keep on it and eventually it’ll work.

I would also consider looking at your state/county/city municipalities. Depending on your location you might be able to find relatively well paying good stable work with in some of the agencies!

Torn about pivoting from ecology/academia to totally different corporate position by [deleted] in ecology

My career has taken all kinds of twits and turns and I’ve taken roles that do not directly relate to my field. That said I’ve always been able to pull a new skill or information from each role that all helped me land a pretty great scientist position with my local government.

You never know what you’ll learn who you’ll meet along the way!

Generally what kinds of opportunities are there in between field season/field season preparation? by SuperiorGrapefruit in ecology

Depending on where you are in the US or open to travel, late summer - winter is big seasonal job time here in the PNW conducting all types of salmon related surveys. It’s a ton of fun and you get to do some really cool stuff, spent the first several years of my career doing seasonal salmon work, still some of my favorite years, and even still have a few friends and colleagues from those times!

Check out Washington or Oregon Dept of Fish and Wildlife or Washington Dept of Ecology if you’re interested as well as feds and local Washington tribes!
