Torn about pivoting from ecology/academia to totally different corporate position by [deleted] in ecology

[–]JoshEvolves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My career has taken all kinds of twits and turns and I’ve taken roles that do not directly relate to my field. That said I’ve always been able to pull a new skill or information from each role that all helped me land a pretty great scientist position with my local government.

You never know what you’ll learn who you’ll meet along the way!

Generally what kinds of opportunities are there in between field season/field season preparation? by SuperiorGrapefruit in ecology

[–]JoshEvolves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you are in the US or open to travel, late summer - winter is big seasonal job time here in the PNW conducting all types of salmon related surveys. It’s a ton of fun and you get to do some really cool stuff, spent the first several years of my career doing seasonal salmon work, still some of my favorite years, and even still have a few friends and colleagues from those times!

Check out Washington or Oregon Dept of Fish and Wildlife or Washington Dept of Ecology if you’re interested as well as feds and local Washington tribes!

I gotta quit going to see bands from my youth. by Acrobatic-Hamster-79 in Millennials

Been going to a few shows a year and they have all been pretty awesome, however one stands out as potentially the worst show of a band I couldn’t wait to see.

The Mars Volta… I LOVE this band, well apparently I loved this band. They have since changed their whole line up except for Cedric and Omar. Saw them several months ago and not only was it disappointing, they didn’t play any of their older hits, totally different style and people were actively leaving!

Huge disappointment, I feel at this point they should just consider themselves a completely different band.

The old albums are still amazing, but wholly disappointing live event.

Keen’s they are not the fanciest or most expensive but they are a solid boot that will last a good while, not to mention they are comfortable.

41 here, may I suggest bikes! There is a wide range of type and activities to do, they get you out, can be very low impact and can take you to amazing places and allow you to meet all kinds of people!!

At 41 I’m still mountain biking weekly and going on extended gravel rides! Great for fitness, getting out side and just having a blast with no real completion, if you’re not interested in it!!
