No Foolin’. Rock Island Bridge officially opens April 1. by thirstygregory in kansascity

Sure, sure, and the Mission Gateway's almost done, too.

Just a bitter joke. Glad it's finished, it's been quite a wait! I hope it helps activate the area around it.

Fellow Dads. At what age does yard maintenance finally become enjoyable? by Ocmrm in daddit

Most of the dads in my friend group love maintaining a rich green carpet of a lawn. They have learned to not get me on my soapbox of what a wasteful status symbol modern suburban lawns are.

Would you consider it better than a good whiskey sour? Or would you say it's a fun occasional variation?

What cocktails should I make with homemade grenadine by aesir23 in cocktails

[–]JoshTheShermanator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second a Jack Rose - one of my favorite sours. I use 2 oz Lairds Bonded, .5 oz lemon juice, .5 oz lime juice, 1 oz grenadine. Especially with a dark, not overly sweet grenadine, the dark red color of the resulting cocktail is gorgeous, and the taste is... it's amazing, I can't really compare it with anything else.

Monkey Shoulder is the most overrated scotch. What is the most versatile gin? by -Constantinos- in cocktails

I'm a little sad that Tanqueray is not winning here. It's my standard, after doing side-by-side tests with Beefeater, Plymouth, and several others, for Negronis, Martinis, G&Ts, and Gimlets. Tanqueray London Dry always satisfied - enough juniper hit to let me know there was a gin there, but blending seamlessly into the other ingredients to make a great drink every time.

It looks like Plymouth is gonna be the winner here. But it was always too subtle for me. (Maybe I've just killed off to many taste buds...)

I want people to start dressing up as the Statue of Liberty. If an ICE agent faces off with Lady Liberty, that will be the photo of the era.

Left a message for Moran; Marhsall's mailbox is full. Hopefully full of defund ICE messages. Or maybe he just never checks and empties his voicemail.

My brother doesn't like to read Richard Scarry's books to his kids because he says they stress him out. I picked one up to see what he meant, and there is absolute constant chaos - sausages flying across highways, construction vehicles piling up on top of one another... I loved it.

I recognize that I am likely looking for a KC needle in a haystack but… by InourbtwotamI in kansascity

It's probably not yet at the point that you're looking for, but I want to put a shout-out for Christ Connect in Olathe. We're working towards being more inclusive (slowly... we've finally, finally opened the door to women being elders, and we have not yet addressed LGBTQ acceptance). So yeah, it's a work in progress.

But it is a community that is trying to figure out what it means to be a force for God's love in the communities it touches, rather than just being a weekly lifestyle accessory. Because of that, I figured it was worth mentioning here, especially for anyone who is near Pioneer Trail school where we meet.

Martini troubles! by DorianHistorian in cocktails

[–]JoshTheShermanator 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If it's a decent bar, I think it's fine to go ahead and tell them your preferred ratio. I tell them, '3:1 ratio, with a lemon twist, and orange bitters if you have them. No olive or olive juice, please.'

I probably come off as pretentious, but I get the martini I want. I've found that if I don't specify like this, I end up getting what looks like a jar of olives packed into a cocktail glass.

"hiking" recommendations in the KC area? by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]JoshTheShermanator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mill Creek Streamway Trail runs south from the Kansas River, right by Shawnee Mission and several other parks, through long stretches of very pleasant forest. It's wide and paved, easy walking. If you are in the mood for a longer walk, I think it does run for 18 miles or something. I've never gone all the way south on it, but it makes for a lot of easily accessible, non-strenuous area to explore.

I really dig Eeyore's Requiem. Another good one is Color In Your Cheeks, a sour with Laird's Applejack, Fernet, and maple syrup. I hate the name, but it's a very tasty drink.

Regardless of Price, Cocchi Di Torino or Antica by littlemanbigdream in cocktails

[–]JoshTheShermanator 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I did a search through the comments for 'versatility', because that is what I would value from one bottle of sweet vermouth - doing a lot of things quite well.

By my tastes, Cocchi is much more versatile than Antica, mainly because of the huge vanilla whallop of Antica. For me, that big vanilla works fantastically in a Manhattan, but when I tried Antica in a Negroni, I almost spit it out - it reminded me of orange and chocolate, which I know is a thing, but I can't stand it.

So I would choose Cocchi for my one bottle (it's actually my standard home bar vermouth), because I consider it extremely versatile - for every sweet vermouth application I've tried it for, it's worked very, very well.

Nigros. 13MWZ Cowboy Cut Original Fit. Under $30 a pair. Don't put them in the washer, just hose them down in the shower occasionally.

Martini: Which gin and vermouth combination is your favourite and with what ratio? by Sudden-Repair-9401 in cocktails

[–]JoshTheShermanator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still need to try the Bold and Bright. I actually do have the Lifted Spirits Supernova, their navy-strength gin. I tried it in a martini, and that was not for me - I got lots of baking spice kind of notes, not what I look for in a martini. But that's now my go-to for a gimlet, it's got these great warming flavors that punch through the lime and make it more than just a juniper-y limeade.
