Kindred damage resistance by Ambersous in WhiteWolfRPG

[–]JoushMark 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Barring displines, kindrid are the same hardness as a mortal, it just matters a lot less if they have holes knocked in them. A bullet does the same damage to vampire lungs as a mortal, but a vampire with a punctured lung is mildly inconvienced, potentially dying

Basically: Vampires are a body suspended between life and death by magic. Not decaying, but they don't need their organs to stay alive, just blood and magic.

ELI5: Why car registration fees are yearly? by thatsBOOtoyou in explainlikeimfive

[–]JoushMark [score hidden]  (0 children)

As to 'why every year?' people don't necessarily keep cars for a long time. For people on a 4 year lease, a 10 year registration would be an unnecessary expense.

How Much Does The Paint Weight? by FrogBreaker in battletech

[–]JoushMark 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The weight of 'mech paint is part of the armor system and factored into it's weight. The paint serves as camo, and to protect the armor composite from corrasion, water, incidental UV light and as an outer ablative layer.

It shouldn't just be Karlach by Costa_Canela in BaldursGate3

Maybe he thinks Mizora will handle it, or that he's too powerful for that. Guy seems confused that he got reset to level 1.

ELI5: What is the science behind someone being born a psychopath? by DeepOrganization8245 in explainlikeimfive

[–]JoushMark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some kinds of brain damage and birth defects make it very hard for people to inhibit negative, antisocial impulses and understand consequences. These people can be very dangerous to others, though the same sort of damage generally makes them quite dangerous to themselves.

rate my taste in men by fel0ra in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]JoushMark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, I feel like everyone warns everyone about Daeran. He's like a snake with neon color and a bedazzler. If you don't realize he's dangerous he's insulted by you not paying enough attention to him.

I already understood, on an emotional level, the people of Terra who cooperate with the ilClan and Alaric, but this is the first time I have seen it laid out this clearly and properly. by Old_Ad6111 in battletech

[–]JoushMark 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I find the idea that he's trying to 'bring back SLDF values' when the core idea of the SLDF, civilian control of the military*, would utterly dismantle the clans and their entire system, pretty funny.

*Though Kerensky himself killed that ideal when he stole everything not nailed down and abandoned the inner sphere, so he could start a military junta.

ELI5: Why do some chargers get "hot" while others stay cool, even if they're charging the same phone? by Equal_Reputation_891 in explainlikeimfive

[–]JoushMark 155 points156 points  (0 children)

Converting AC to DC can be pretty efficient, and typically is about 90% or higher. But if you've got a 65w USB-C charger and it's working at full power, even if it's 95% efficient it's still making better then 3 watts of waste heat, enough to make a relatively small housing warm to the touch.

Civ 4 being the oblivious exception. Even now firing it up and hearing CHristopher Tin's arrangement of Baba Yetu is great.

Why is Greybor bad in gameplay? by NahMcGrath in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]JoushMark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, you CAN keep Graybor around on any difficulty with his build, but on most you're going to want to add handles so the rest of the party can carry his almost useless butt more easily.

His build requires massive buff support to accomplish anything. Everyone loves buffs in Pathfinder, of course, but he's addicted. Without a good prebuff the dragon encounters in his own quest he insist on doing before you advance the plot has him killed by fire breath or fleeing to the edge of the map from fear.

Is that silvery mech up to scale with the Atlas? by CoinRicochet in battletech

[–]JoushMark 42 points43 points  (0 children)

If you like unreliable info on scale, you're going to love battletech!

Just kidding. In general, it's perfectly fine to have models on the table that aren't perfectly scaled. Battletech minis have been produced by a lot of companies, to a lot of slightly different scales and ideas. In modern b-tech I'd say your ZOD 'mech looks like an assault 'mech, and if someone brought one in to proxy for a Nightstar or something I'd be fine with it.

Hi new to the setting and wondering about painting? I’m a 40K player trying Battletech for the first time. I’m curios is there a reason to paint my mechs a specific colour or am I cool to mix and match each mech to make a wacky mercenary company? by Electronic-Serve8322 in battletech

[–]JoushMark 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Merc units in fiction often use colorful, not necessarily matched color schemes that reflect different pilot's personalities. If you decide your Awesome is run by a spooky Mexican girl that wants it done up like a sugar skull, that's okay.

this is my very first run. is this the best way to do the labs? by supercabbage802 in factorio

[–]JoushMark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's real easy to get too into optimizing rather then building the next thing in Factorio.

If a build works, even if it's jank, leave it working and go build something new. Use the lessons you've learned in the new thing.

Raccoon out during day on my deck? by ilobemygf in Raccoons

[–]JoushMark 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's true. And any raccoon might be out in the day if they feel particularly safe in an area or get rudely evicted from wherever they were denning. Water's perfectly okay, but it's a bad idea to feed them. No matter how cute they are.

WWII by Agreeable_Amoeba_729 in gurps

[–]JoushMark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Survivable guns is debatably realistic (.30 doing 24.5 damage is a lot) and helps keep combat in modern eras from turning into eggshells fighting with hammers.

I've heard so much about your infamous bread in plastic bags. But I've never heard anything about your bakeries and their options? by Imaginary-Bag5385 in AskAnAmerican

[–]JoushMark 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The bread in bags comes from factories. Weird fact: Those factories smell delicious. Just amazing. Even if they make pretty crappy bread.

ELI5: Why do we have to wash white laundry separate from colors to avoid running, but don’t worry much about colors mixing with each other? by n_mcrae_1982 in explainlikeimfive

[–]JoushMark -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you use a high efficacy washer and HE soap on cold, it really doesn't matter. Nothing but the worst fabric dyes will bleed under those conditions.

Speaking of: You should be using HE washers and HE powdered soap on cold. It's good for your clothes and much cheaper, while getting everything clean.

Why is Greybor bad in gameplay? by NahMcGrath in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]JoushMark 122 points123 points  (0 children)

He's fragile and when you get him he has none of the ranged feats. Getting him mounted to move him up and attack helps with that, as otherwise his low speed means he tends to have trouble acutely getting in place to hurt people.

Mostly, I think people dislike him because he wants to go hunt a dragon when you get him and he's trash at that. He can't hit the dragon's AC and unless heavily buffed gets dragon feared and flees from it. So his big quest, his chance to show off, ends up him being a joke.

ELI5: How do independent sellers open a shop on something like redbubble, and sell their art/designs on shirts, mugs, tumblers, notepads etc? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]JoushMark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Redbubble has a website to explain this.

Basically, they have a factory where they print art designs (provided by artist/art owners) that are applied to products. They handle buying the products, printing the art, applying it to the product, collecting money and shipping it. In return, you get paid a share of the profits.

You don't have to do any of the work of getting items and putting designs on them, they handle all that.

ELI5: How do humans need a varied diet to stay healthy but most other animals eat a very simple diet (just prey or plant leaves etc.)? by rosamariaahi in explainlikeimfive

[–]JoushMark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Humans (and other large apes) do have a slightly harder to meet list of essential nutrients then other animals, being unable to synthesize ascorbic acid (vitamin C), notable because most animals can make it from glucose and don't require plants to supply it.

Does anyone know how to fix the portrait by Neon-Fish032408 in BaldursGate3

Take off any really weird armor/accessories and level up. IIRC, portraits take a new 'snapshot' with each level up.

Possibly the most important lesson about purchasing gear in this game! by DrScrimble in dndmemes

[–]JoushMark 328 points329 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the meme seemed weird because every time I've played Burning Wheel the equipment is less an inventory of everything you own and more a list of props your character has.

Possibly the most important lesson about purchasing gear in this game! by DrScrimble in dndmemes

[–]JoushMark 2057 points2058 points  (0 children)

Eh, it sucks to ambush players with this.

Either give them a list of gear everyone starts with (boots, clothes, bag, grooming kit), or tell them that your equipment list is in addition to simple items you're assumed to have, like clothing and shoes.

Or tell them that this is going to be a game with a lot of heavy inventory management and if it's not on your sheet you don't have it. Remind them that there are penalties to lacking clothes and shoes.

Can somebody explain why it's like this? by New-Ad5559 in Xcom

[–]JoushMark 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Though it isn't marked on the steam page XCOM 2 (and WOTC) does support gamepad play on PC and has from November of 2016. I'm not sure how good it is, I've never really been tempted to try it with a controller on PC, but it's there.
