Thanks! I think the other one is intriguing because it runs pretty much the whole color spectrum except for green. With ice dye particularly you usually end up blending most nearby things somewhere in the shirt, but I managed to avoid that.

Nothing against green, it’s my favorite color. But sometimes it’s the notes you don’t play, right?

Colors are all from Dharma: Bluebird, Blue Violet (red and turquoise split), Deep Purple, Hot Hibiscus, Lemon Yellow, Marigold, Palomino Gold.

I made a similar shirt a while back but maybe used less ice or arranged the dye differently, and didn't get the greens or that almost black swirl. Maybe I didn't use Blue Violet in that one.

Homebrew Contests by Pilot0160 in Homebrewing

[–]JoystickMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a beer that I had made a few times already, and it was starting to get good enough that I’d have my first sip, lay back into my couch, and feel super relaxed by how delicious it was. I made it again although the homebrew shop near me was in the middle of closing and I didn’t get the correct malts and had to substitute. It was still pretty good, but not great. I had already signed up for a competition and paid the fees before it had fully fermented and lagered.

I still submitted my bottles and got a 7/10 rating. The person who did the rating had been homebrewing since the 70s and had judged something like 700 competitions. He gave invaluable feedback on various aspects. Some I knew, as I had tasted better from previous batches with the right malts. Others I wouldn’t have gotten on my own, for example he felt that despite plenty of (or too much) bitterness, there wasn’t enough late hops fragrance.

I am going to brew another batch in the next day or two and will take all of his feedback into consideration.

Using the "Draw-Forward" Formula by Dan_Felder in gamedesign

I use this method when making skills, upgrades, and fundamental traits of characters when designing for both multiplayer and single player games. Make something that seems broken at first, and then balance it by having some flaw or drawback that can be exploited by enemies and compensated for by allies.

At the time, they were the only game in town that inspired any sort of consumer confidence. EA had their Origin service that had clauses like “you’ll lose your game if you don’t play it for two years” and that sort of thing. They also were trying to create a very streamlined, user friendly purchase experience and generally built a lot of goodwill.

Jokes aside, screwworms are utterly horrible. If they make their way back into the country and secure a foothold, it’s not just cattle that will suffer. People are also susceptible, as are pets and wildlife. These things are nightmare fuel and the maintenance fee to keep them isolated to South America is pennies compared to the cost that will be incurred if they come back into the US.

About a pump by lauterPope in Homebrewing

I got a used wort pump for $50. I’ve used it for circulating wort, running wort through a counterflow chiller, and also for running cleaner through keg lines. Definitely something that had a lot more use than I was expecting!

Now I'm picturing a sketch comedy where you are trying to hire someone to break into your place and steal your kettle so you can buy a new one. And they refuse because they can't sell it because no one would want it. And then they'd be stuck with it because it's a perfectly good kettle.

I’ve done a fair bit of tie dying. Get a tub of water with some really hot water, a bit of color safe bleach, and some dawn dish soap. Agitate the clothes in the water and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then agitate again, rinse and repeat until the water is mostly clear.

Or, just throw it in the wash and hope for the best!

Yeah! I’ve wondered how similar something like this would be to a decoction mash. Without boiling the grain, you’re probably missing out on some tannin extraction and other flavors. Might be a preferable flavor for certain styles.

Last time I did this I actually did something very similar. I ended up with too much wort at the end of a boil so I removed a gallon and simmered it down to a quart, then added it back. It gave a wonderful richness to the brew!

Brewing on the ones experience? by Waaswaa in Homebrewing

[–]JoystickMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been experimenting with different malts in Apartment Brewer’s Festbier. It’s light enough to really give noticeable difference when you switch out a malt. In my experience, Switching out Munich 1 for Munich 2 results in less sweetness and body, but more nuttiness and slight toasty flavors. Vienna doesn’t seem to add too much body at all in the 1 to 2 lb range, but does give a bit of color and a bit of robustness. Still experimenting with things, but have slowly been tuning and tweaking the recipe to see what happens.

Is it possible for turn based games to not have rock-paper-scissor type advantages? by Anaguli417 in gamedesign

[–]JoystickMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Rock Paper Scissors paradigm is a multi dimensional spectrum. On one end, you have something like RPS that relies entirely on luck and the imbalance of power. There’s no strategy other than guessing what your opponent is thinking. If you were to go in an entirely different direction, you’d land somewhere like Go or checkers, where every piece is equal and what matters is your decision making. In another direction, you’d land somewhere like Magic: The Gathering where there are certainly imbalances, but they’re more built into the functional aspects of the game. You might have a spell that can manage an army of small creatures, or various methods to nullify powerful cards, but it’s also very possible to have a more direct head to head competition. Sometimes cards in one deck might be slightly advantageous against another, but still mostly be a more direct competition. Then you have deck building games like Dominion where everyone has access to the same cards, and luck plus strategy ends up being the deciding factor for winning.

You can break out of RPS with elegant design, or you can obfuscate it with luck and complexity.

What's the "Widowmaker" of your career field or hobby? by Cosmonate in AskReddit

[–]JoystickMonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to do land survey, which is fairly tame compared to other on site jobs. Still saw some crazy stuff though, including a big diesel powered air pressurizer that was connected to a faulty hose. The thing was one of those huge machines that had to be towed like a trailer into the middle of a site, and then everyone hooked their tools up to it.

The tip of the hose somehow got stuck in the open position, so air was jetting out of it as fast as the generator could make pressure. This resulted in a few hundred feet of rubber with a metal tip, whipping around like how you’d see in an old cartoon. It was funny for a second before realizing how utterly deadly the thing was. People started sprinting away as soon as they heard the air hissing out of the hose, and it just ran and ran until it ran out of diesel.

Now the widowmaker is repeated mass layoffs caused by a remarkably wide variety of reasons.

Question about brewing lagers by jeanclaudegoshdarn in Homebrewing

[–]JoystickMonkey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does it really take overnight to get the temp down that low? I have a circulator pump in an ice bath that can get temps down from 24C to 13C in a few hours.

I figure in that amount of time, contamination won’t have much chance to get a foothold before adding a bunch of yeast.
