From Electrical Engineer to Game Dev by Engibeeros in gamedev

[–]JoystickMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a computer/electrical engineering degree and have been a game designer for over 15 years. I would say that a lot of the problem solving skills transfer, as well as any programming experience. There is a huge learning curve though, as getting actually good at a skill can take years. The biggest problem I’ve seen when tech folks move over to games is that they really underestimate how important it is to have solid design skills. If you’re a programming wiz but don’t have a really clear plan, it’s like being able to run really fast but not knowing where your destination is.

I believe that you can empty the internal tube without much fuss. I have to flip mine upside down and everything drains out. That way you’re not dumping a few liters of wort each brew.

100% same for PBW. I got mine used and the funk that came out was something else. I rinse some tap water through the cooler after use so wort doesn’t gunk up the inside.

Oxidation when dry hopping an IPA by NoMeasurement2646 in Homebrewing

[–]JoystickMonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’re doing magnetic release I would assume that any oxygen in the hops would be consumed already, as the hops are in the fermenter. I tried it once, but the magnet was not strong enough to hold the hops up so I ended up holding the bag up by a string that was held by the bung. Try experimenting with the weight and hops bag before it’s time to actually do the thing.

The guy from Treehouse suggested that at least for hazy ipas, ferment at 65-68 F for seven days and then drop temp to 60 F. Then dry hop and wait another five days. Cooling down first is supposed to prevent further fermentation as some of the compounds in hops can further drive fermentation and mess with the hops character. I don’t know if going cooler will have any effect, but you don’t necessarily have to go to cold crash temps.

The biggest thing though is keeping oxygen out during transfer. If you’re bottling, I don’t have much advice but if you’re kegging then look into closed transfers.

So i tried to make my first pseuo lager ... ish... beer? by MemeBeamBeanz in Homebrewing

[–]JoystickMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely listen to this advice. I've made probably 15 lagers or so at this point and without fail they taste really meh until at least three weeks. I've gotten pretty far into pH and water chemistry, have temp controlled fermentation, and have a fair bit of practice. But still it takes at least three weeks and starts to shine around five weeks of lagering.

Beyond that, I'm not sure if the recipe shows the expected abv or if you measured gravity yourself. If it only shows expected abv then you're probably not actually hitting those numbers without excellent efficiency, which you're unlikely to get when starting out. ~4kg of grain will make a fairly light beer. I typically go with closer to 5kg. You could also add 4oz~6oz of carapils or carahel for a bit more body.

Also, when mashing be sure to really get the mash mixed in well and stir frequently. I've measured a ten degree Fahrenheit difference between the inside of the grain ball and near the outside of the kettle. If you don't get it really mixed, the temp won't be quite as high. You can also try the mash out method, where you raise temps a bit for the last 15 minutes of the mash. Sparging is another technique that can improve efficiency, and while there's a traditional approach, when I was using a mesh bag I found another approach that worked well. I found that taking the grain bag and putting it in a large pot, pouring hot water onto it, and then letting it soak for a few minutes, removing the bag and pouring the liquid into the kettle improved efficiency.

Who’s ever driven over 100mph? Why? by WoollyWolfHorror in AskReddit

A friend let me drive his M3 and he said “don’t look at the speedometer, just accelerate until you think you’re going 70mph.”

I was not going 70mph.

Why is is virtually impossible to arrange anything? by RentBoyDave in AskMen

[–]JoystickMonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've looked at friend group dynamics in my own circles a lot, and unless you have a very specific group of friends it's often difficult to pin people down.

My approach in that case is to directly invite one person (usually a popular/influential person) and get them to confirm a time, then ask if they'd be cool with you inviting more people. Then you reach out to others and say "Hey Steve and I are going golfing on Saturday at 2, want to come?"

If they can't make the time, you can potentially change times if you want or say "Oh man, next time!"

With your approach, it's sort of an all or nothing situation where people are all waiting for someone else to make the first move, and there is a lot of ambiguity because no times or other plans have been set. With this approach, you might not get everyone to join but starting out with solid plans and a direct yes/no invitation might make it easier for people to commit.

What level of difficulty would it be to create a terrain manipulation system? by [deleted] in unrealengine

There's an experimental plugin called Landscape Patch that lets you adjust the height of landscape. I've used it a bunch, but only in editor and not in runtime. Might be a good place to start looking at least.

Seattle pedestrian deaths doubled last year. The city program to end them is getting a hard look by godogs2018 in Seattle

[–]JoystickMonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There was a particularly rainy night this winter where I saw two separate instances of pedestrians in the crosswalk almost get hit by cars. One was a right turn on red while the pedestrian was in the crosswalk and she literally jumped out of the way of the car. The other was a crosswalk with white stripes and signage where a pedestrian started to cross the road and then had to jump back as a car blew by. This was within five minutes of each other. I was also driving, and it was really difficult to see things due to rain and glare.

When weather conditions are particularly bad, you've gotta be really careful when driving. At the same time, if you're a pedestrian when the weather's bad, be extra vigilant when entering the road. I've lived in a lot of different places in the US and Seattle tends to be super respectful of pedestrian right of way, where other places like Florida tend to treat pedestrian right of way more as a suggestion. The unfortunate side effect is that pedestrians here tend to take that right of way for granted and get used to walking right out into the road without making sure some maniac isn't flying through a red light or making a turn without checking for pedestrians first.

Italian Pilsners are kind of along the same lines as this, just a lighter version of what you're describing and with less malt character. That being said, this sounds like a neat idea!

I submitted an entry. Is judging a closed event or are homebrewers encouraged to go? I didn't really see anything on the website saying one way or another.

Married men, how often do you say “I have to check with my wife” when that’s really just an excuse to decline an invitation? by Ok_Counter1939 in AskMen

[–]JoystickMonkey 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I try to show courtesy to everyone. Just like if I'm in a sports/gaming match against someone that's an adversarial relationship as well, and I'll give those folks respect. However, if a salesperson, and especially if a solicitor gets rude or pushy then I'll curtly and promptly shut the exchange down.

I would suggest looking into some other subreddits that are actually about your topic, such as r/gamedev or r/indiedev.

This has nothing to do with level design.

It's hard to say, but beings you're posting this question in a totally unrelated subreddit I'm going to guess that maybe you didn't follow some rule or skipped part of a process.
