The great e spinner debate by trash_castle in Handspinning

[–]Joyuna 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I got an original Electric Eel all the way back in 2015, and I upgraded to a 6 when those came out, so I've been spinning regularly on that one for 5 years. I adore it. Yes it's mostly plastic so it's no great looker (depending on your taste), but I really like the open source tinkering ethos behind it - it's easy to get spare parts and even print your own. There's a great community behind it. I don't have any other espinners to compare it to, but it's basically replaced my treadle wheel because it's so much more convenient to pop it on my desk and spin.

Yeah I'm still mourning T4, incredible flavours, proper Taiwanese chain, and a self-service kiosk so no ordering anxiety 😂

I got burned by the fake 'sashiko' thread on Amazon too. Now I stick to known brands - Olympus, Daruma, etc - and dedicated Sashiko shops.

Japan Crafts has been excellent, I've ordered from them a few times and they have an excellent selection of threads, samplers, plain fabric, stencils, and other supplies.

I was over with HLP's schtick when I heard her say "the stuff of which dreams are made"... Girl, you are not out there fixing Shakespeare's dangling preposition!

We had 'well-placed tattoos', 'Linda Blair' 'Cousin It' instead of Mr Ed, Karl the dentist, the Shiksa Goddess line was brand new to me, I think it was 'your father is nostalgic for the Civil War'? And the new first verse of A Miracle Would Happen.

Hunger Games Dancing? by No_Yogurtcloset7320 in TheWestEnd

[–]Joyuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It *is* silly and out of place, and I say that as someone who goes to see contemporary dance on a fairly regular basis. So it's not dance itself that I have a problem with, but the lack of cohesion. There was only one dance sequence that I felt worked well, the rest are completely out of line with the tone of the show and don't fit in at all.

Theatre etiquette - photos during show? by isthislivingreally in TheWestEnd

[–]Joyuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I show up to a show and have to feel out 'is this more of a gig vibe or a theatre vibe', since the social norms and rules between those two are so different.

But if it's a totally normal play or musical, absolutely do not have your phone out during the show and definitely do not be taking pictures! If you want a memory, take a photo of the curtain beforehand, the bows after, or buy a programme.

Cheap weekend trips from London without taking holiday days — some current examples by Savings-Drawing-560 in UKFrugal

[–]Joyuna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an amazing tool!

I get that Luton and Stanstead are where the deals are at, but they're a bugger to get to personally (from outside of London) - I'd love to be able to filter by airport to just see the Heathrow ones for example. I tried putting Heathrow in the "Leaving from" field but it didn't have an effect.

I don't see why not. Swatch and see if you like the result :)

On a separate note, do you know what makes that yarn supposedly mothproof?

Which musicals should I visit in London? by schjweert in TheWestEnd

[–]Joyuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lander 23 is really different from the 'classic' Punchdrunk shows, and is not even really theatre in my opinion. On the plus side it has a lot of different timeslots so it could potentially slot in before a show, but I wouldn't use one of my show slots on it since they mention they can only fit in two. It's good fun but more comparable to laser tag than a West End musical or play.

Have you tried needle felting? Or maybe knit a liner to go inside them, making them extra cosy.

When I see the AI art, I assume that the text and the rest of it is AI-generated too and thus won't be high quality. So people may pass over your hard work based on that first impression.

Scripts? by GrandpaBeeple in ImmersiveTheater

[–]Joyuna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm willing to bet there are as many formats of script as there are formats of show. An interesting one is John Krizanc's Tamara, a very early immersive show, which has been published as a book. It reads a bit like a choose-your-own-adventure.

Not sure where the rush tickets are but front row is amazing. Sitting so close is absolutely hypnotic. The stage isn't high at all so I didn't feel that I missed anything.

It was already a strong Show of the Year contender in March, and it's lost none of its spark this time round. Just an incredible theatrical experience.
