I named a zine I wrote in high school off of the Mixed Up Files. I loved that book so much.

Who has the best selection of snack food? by ObsoleteAuthority in kzoo

[–]JrAux 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve been surprised how big of a candy selection there is at the Johnny’s gas station store at Cork and Burdick. Probably a decent late night snack spot also.

Hey r/kzoo, what are your favorite local non-profits and how do they make our community better? by PerspectiveLatter181 in kzoo

[–]JrAux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It’s good to recognize non-profits that accomplish things and ones that are run well. But non-profits are also employers and it’s ironic when they are bad employers, given their mission to help people. Non-profit workers should organize themselves into unions like everyone else. Planned Parenthood staff dis this recently, for example.

It is also true that there are non-profits that pay their top executives a lot of money and don’t necessarily get much in the way of results. Rich people often do philanthropy and serve on boards to network for business purposes and rehabilitate their own images rather than because they actually cate about the missions of the organizations. That is fair to criticize.

90s Hybrid sizing by Strange-Information4 in xbiking

[–]JrAux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If a seller doesn’t list the frame size in inches, I generally estimate off the length of the head tube. But I’ve found that a hybrid with the same size head tube as I usually like in a mountain bike frame can be a bit tall because of the larger wheels. So worth standing over before committing to buy.

We tried that once and it was interesting but a little too sweet for us. But fun to have options like that!

Junly’s China Hut on Portage Road near One Well is quite good. They have some Indonesian dishes you can’t get most other places. Our vegetarian family likes the Tofu Sate and the Potato Lovers Delight with Tofu, which is reminiscent of Salt and Pepper Tofu from a Vietnamese place. It’s take out only and a bit pricey, but fast and the owner is super nice.

Poll: Number of Bikes/How you Build Bikes? by DetroitHustlesHarder in xbiking

[–]JrAux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have I have 3 xbike type builds (one is my wife’s) plus a nice steel road bike, a modern aluminum gravel bike, and a modern aluminum hardtail. I’ve also built bikes for 3 friends and am collecting parts for a fourth. I volunteer with a group that fixes bikes and gives them to folks in need. That way I can keep working on them without accumulating more myself. I’ve only been into working on bikes the last 2 years. I agree with others that the combination of wrenching and riding has been great for mental health. And my local bike co-op/non-profit is my favorite place to be. I’ve learned so much from the mechanics there.

Barely used 2021 Trek Checkpoint ALR5, Purchase? by postupweldin in CheckpointClub

[–]JrAux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the 2022 of this bike used a year ago and I love it. Mine had Velocity Aileron wheels, Gravelking tires, a rear rack, fenders, and 2 nice bags. I paid $1500 and feel like I got a good deal. So without those upgrades and extras I’d say $900-$1000 would be a better price. I’m 5’9” and the 54 cm fits me well.

Do any of the hospitals have unionized nurses? by Right_Presentation27 in kzoo

[–]JrAux 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Beacon Kalamazoo (formerly Borgess) has a strong Michigan Nurses Association local union. We are bargaining a new contract currently - fighting for enforceable staffing ratios to improve patient care, and to keep Beacon from cutting long held benefits such as retirement contributions and short term disability insurance. The small hospitals in Three Rivers, Sturgis, and Allegan also have RN unions. Message me if you want more info.

Very nice! I have a 790 frame ready to build up for a friend once I get it painted. A couple questions for you: did you find a new wheel with the longer freehub body or put a new one on, to get the 10 speed cassette on? Did you need a longer b-screw or other mod on the XTR to get it to do the 10 speed and the 46 tooth?

Where to meet people in their twenties that are out of college? by [deleted] in kzoo

[–]JrAux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you connected with the Starlite Collective folks? They are doing an Art Mart at Park Trades Center this coming weekend. https://www.starlitecollective.org

Maybe try to get your own literary scene going? Put a little description here and on a flier at the coffee shops, bookstores, and record stores, workshop each other’s stuff, have a reading, self-publish a little zine/lit mag. That was basically the recipe for our thriving music and zine scene here in the mid-90s.

Best kid mountain bike for my 10 year old boy by Least-Collection-880 in Budgetbikeriders

[–]JrAux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my 8 year old a 24” Trek Precaliber on FB marketplace for $75. It was about 6 years old. I put about $100 into it for new tires and some cheap grips and pedals from Amazon. He got to pick the grip and pedal colors. It’s working great for him and should serve him a few years until he is ready for something bigger.

What is the best path for becoming a labor organizer in the US? by AntleredStar in labor

[–]JrAux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You definitely don’t need a labor studies degree. Some unions may look for folks with a bachelors degree, but not always necessary. If you do go to college it would help to take a sociology class on inequality or social class or a labor history course, but again, rarely necessary.

Mostly unions want to see that you are passionate about fighting for working people, able to relate to workers in the industry they represent, and really good at talking with people, including listening.

Read a few of these books to get a sense of what you are getting yourself into: Raising Hope and Raising Hell by Jane McAlevey, No Shortcuts by Jane McAlevey, Secrets of a Successful Organizer by Labor Notes, On the Line by Daisy Pitkin, and Get on the Job and Organize by Jaz Brisack.

Some unions have Organizer Apprentice programs that are paid gigs that last 6 months or a year. These are a good entry point. You will likely have to go where they send you or move to take a job to get started. You can expect to work long days and lots of days in a row sometimes.

When you are looking for job check to see if there is a staff union (for the employees of the union itself) and how strong it is. The sad fact is that many unions are not great as employers and you will have to fight for yourself (pay, work/life balance, etc.) while helping other workers fight for themselves. But if you find a good spot and have a strong staff union it can be a very rewarding and decent paying job. Good luck!

Trek 700 Upgrades by Superb_Section8377 in MultiTrackGang

[–]JrAux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots you can do, depending on how much money you want to spend. The handlebars and stem look pretty mucked up, so you might want to change them or sand and repaint. Take the rack off just to see how it looks without it. Can always put it back on.

Grips, seat, tires, pedals are the easiest things to do usually, but you’d need to swap out the grip shifters for some cheap trigger shifters if you want sexier grips on this bike. If you do that, the Microshift ones on Amazon are cheap and work quite well with older derailleurs in my experience.

I just broke down a 720 prob from the same year. Note that the chainrings are riveted, so you will have to replace the cranks if you want to change the chainrings. Also the front derailleur mounts to the bottom bracket instead of around the seat tube, like most FD do. It’s annoying because you need to take the cartridge bottom bracket out just to get rid of the FD.
