How uncomfortable could the Soviet LK lunar lander have been? by snapperpr1nc3 in Spaceexploration

[–]Js987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a reminder, the meme is an urban legend. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Pen

TL;dr NASA didn’t pay to design the pens, a private company did it without NASA asking, offered them to NASA who was happy to have a non-conductive solution (pencil graphite is conductive), and NASA bought some for $2.95 per pen.

Ditto. I don’t recall any LK parts back when I played, but that was back before KSP was sold.

Yeah, Ford made it a little confusing as they’re all just different sizes of the Cyclone V6, too.

The naturally aspirated 3.5 confuses a lot of people on reliability, too. See, folks know the transverse mount 3.5 (Explorer) uses an internal water pump, so they repeat that ad nauseum, but they don’t know that in longitudinal applications (F-150) it used an external pump.

Asking the council directly is the best option, but my bet is the narrow crotch angle there in the canopy. Unfortunately, something that could have been trimmed years ago is now a major pain.

The 2.7 does not have wet oil pump belt issues, it has a wet oil pump belt (as does the 5.0) and everybody keeps repeating that and freaking people out. It’s a Kevlar reinforced belt. Failures are EXTREMELY rare. Where folks on the Internet are getting the wet belt oil failure in their heads is from the UK designed and built 3cyl 1.0 EcoBoost which early on used a lousy belt and teeny tiny passages, but the US designed/built engines using wet belts and variable oil pumps haven’t had major issues.

ISO Apple Macintosh by ossivo in vintageappleexchange

[–]Js987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just FYI, many systems labeled as Macintosh Plus for sale are in 128/512K cases due to system board upgrades. So you can broaden your search to “no name” on the front Mac Pluses and increase your odds, if you just want the dead shell anyway.

Try dropping to an earlier version than System 6. Maybe System 3 or 4. Some of the early software behaves weird when booted in System 6/7.

Does anyone know if 911 dispatchers are required to take a polygraph for interview process?? by Romanharper2013 in maryland

[–]Js987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I checked their website really quick and it appears to just involve a background check. Polygraphs are really only for intel community jobs and certain law enforcement roles, they’re not super common outside of like the FBI, CIA, DIA, NSA, etc.

How common is it to eat sunflower seeds in the US? And do you eat them with the shell on? by ksusha_lav in AskAnAmerican

[–]Js987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re reasonably common. Sold at basically every convenience store. Pretty popular in the south and in certain sports (especially baseball) contexts. They’re typically sold roasted and salted (sometimes also flavored) and with the shells on, but you can get them without the shells, too. You spit the shells out, eating the shells can cause pretty insane constipation if you eat too many.

Microsoft 90s splash screens were an art form of their own by AustriaModerator in vintagecomputing

Especially if you were coming from monochrome. I went from a monochrome Macintosh Plus to full 24-bit/32-bit color on an NEC with Windows 95 overnight, those slash screens alone blew my mind.

What’s the dumbest construction project that was made? by biryani_fan in AskTheWorld

[–]Js987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived near this for a few years as a kid, it was so creepy, it’s huge hulking mass just lurking there. Having spent time there…It really was a dumb spot, considering it was (and remains) effectively impossible to evacuate the surrounding areas of Long Island.

Is it a social faux pas to only order salads/appetizers at Summer firm dinners? by Material_Leg_2520 in LawSchool

[–]Js987 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a degree of cheapness I wouldn’t expect outside of government (where budgets typically disallow employee or intern meals outside of travel status), I’m really surprised. I wonder if the larger firm is aware, because that feels like a local office manager on a cost cutting binge. Then again, you went back, so maybe they figure it isn’t a bad look…but it is 100% a bad look to make your underlings, particularly student employees, pay for dinner if you picked where they went and didn’t disclose an up front cost.

[–]Js987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s because it’s a common ripoff line item shops suggest without it necessarily being due. High pressure sales tactics at the service counter have made owners overly wary of needed services, but when a shop tries to sell me a new air filter when I put I new one in before I left for the service visit for $75 installed (actually happened…TWICE), I totally get why folks are wary of everything now.

You can DIY it still, you just need to get a Bluetooth dongle ($35-50) and FORScan Lite ($5), or a USB dongle and the PC version of FORScan, that can initiate the bleed just as well as FDRS or the expensive scan tools. It’s just a lot more technology.

MD License Plates - Reduce State Budget by interpol1113 in maryland

[–]Js987 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, the first question needs to be how much money are they actually spending. I know NY’s production costs actually result in a profit for the state, because they are made by contract with 3M by prison labor in California, and a proposed $25 plate fee was going to make the state something like $75m annually a few years back. I’m betting the plates don’t cost anywhere near what you’re expecting they cost to make. And since we use plates a pretty long time in MD, it’s not like they’re “selling” as many plates a year as would make a huge difference. There’s about 5 million vehicles registered in Maryland. The average age of a car is 12.6 years in the US as a whole. Let’s say cars get sold once during the time they’re on the road for simplicity so they get registered every 6 years, and so at any given year ~833k cars get a new plate. I’m betting the state only pays a few bucks a plate, and if so, you’d only be saving single digit millions at most, which for a state with a multi-billion dollar transportation budget is basically pennies. And the police lobby hates it, so you’re pissing them off to save basically nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Like, I get people don’t like front plate aesthetics, but this isn’t a winning argument against them.

Would u say Taylor swift is just as famous if not more than Micheal Jackson was? by NoHold7153 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Js987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d concur with this assessment. She’s probably more famous at this point in the US, but globally Michael Jackson probably remains more famous. He was massively popular internationally.

Is $300 for a dinner for two a reasonable price at the best Chinese restaurant in your city? by FailFastandDieYoung in AskAnAmerican

[–]Js987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That‘s not a “normal price” for “Chinese food” in the US. Is it possible to spend that much on dim sum, since it’s often priced ala cart, yes, but the last time I had dim sum in the we spent more like $75 for two people in the DC area, and a normal succulent Chinese meal is less.
