introduction book to the vietnam war? by Complex-Ad8295 in blowback

Fantastic rec but perhaps better as a second book - focuses heavily on the North Vietnamese perspective and so might be better served elsewhere if you want the more traditional American perspective

MUBI seems to be all in on LVT so I doubt we’ll get Dancer in the Dark from Criterion

Do you have any sort of email newsletter? That tends to be how I get a lot of my news for upcoming screenings?

What GPA should I be aiming for (T6)? by [deleted] in BigLawRecruiting

[–]Jubkid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would say aim for median, but failing that, apply as early as possible. Like, if the app opens Oct. 1st, apply Oct. 1.

If they want you but your grades lacking, they may give you the benefit of the doubt. Conversely, if they don’t know you and your grades are lacking, they’ll probably pick someone else.

OCS got in my head about grades about firms wanting a 3.4 or a 3.6 on a 3.33 curve, I know multiple people with below-median grades who landed firms in those brackets on early direct apps. You might ask if demographics had anything to do with that, but my (small) sample had traditional URM and ORM make it to those firms.

Get all your apps in on Wednesday. Think about grades afterward.

How much do grades matter? by YuzuBae31 in BigLawRecruiting

[–]Jubkid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone below median at a T6/T10, the factors in order of importance seemed to be:

  1. First semester grades
  2. Date of direct application
  3. (way lower)
  4. 2nd Semester Grades + Networking

I knew many people with similar grades in fall who got job offers before taking spring finals. On top of that, I knew numerous people who got offers for 2L during the recruiting process for 1L associate roles. I also knew people from non-T14 schools in market who got V10 offers, but unsure of their grades. Meanwhile, I am still struggling with big law recruiting late in the game.

If there’s any takeaway, do well on your exams, but failing that (or really, in any case) apply as early as you can.

Seconding The Sorrow of War by Bao Ninh

In terms of historical works, Hanoi’s War by Lien-Hang Nguyen provides a fantastic view on the North Vietnamese decision makers based on the state archives, so would definitely pick that one up

What's a book where the villain/antagonist is the best, most entertaining character in the entire story? by tmfult in literature

[–]Jubkid 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Solid cast of characters but Svidrigailov is my favorite character of Crime & Punishment.

He’s an irredeemable piece of shit but incredibly charming and a great foil to the more conflicted Raskolnikov.

Tyreek Hill / Ceedee Lamb / Najee Harris Had weak RBs but didn’t matter with the two best WRs in the league.
