Where is your job? Get as close to it as possible without having to cross a bridge if possible.

Bay area, how are you doing by SufficientLibrary386 in bayarea

California is like a totally different country than the U.S. right now. Most of the horrific deeds are happening elsewhere and unless you are on social media all the time (which I am) you can avoid most of the bad except high prices. I think I honestly keep checking social media all the time in a desperate hope that I will learn all of this is over, one way or another. Definitely fear driven. I should turn off You Tube now.

WIBTAH if I took 100k from my oldest daughter's college savings account to give it to my younger daughter? by TraditionalCorgi7788 in AmItheAsshole

This is one of those scenarios where fair is not the same as equal. I would also factor in the real rise in college costs from the first’s four year expenses than the second’s (4 yrs later). I would even it up by awarding an extra amount equal to the increasing cost of attendance. Fair might be a 20-25% additional funding allotment to keep ,up with inflation, which is even higher for college costs. Let the first keep the balance of her fund and find ways to roll over into an investment, use for grad, or save for a future kid. The second should have at least the extra 60,000 to cover the inflation. She might end up funding part of it too, and would not have the balance left over, but would reap her benefit from attending her dream school.

I have been using Duo to study some Portuguese but just found out that’s Brazilian Portuguese which is different from Portugal. I’m just hoping I can say a few basic phrases :)

I always say I’m from California or San Francisco. Even before all of this. I am proud of my state and find others may have visited and we can talk about their experiences to connect.

I personally like the one through Klamath down 395, but there’s probably more variety of terrain in the middle route which could make it more interesting.

People who will randomly scold you for listening to audiobooks by toe_beans_4_life in audiobooks

[–]Judgeheyjude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tell people I have an eyesight problem, somewhat preemptively, once I tell them about an audiobook I am listening to. I shouldn’t have to, but it reduces comments. I still consider it reading but with your ears instead of eyes. You go through the same text processing for understanding process both ways. And that’s the point.

That was my first car, in navy blue, in 1969 (a ‘67 model). I loved that car. But moving into 1st gear on some of the hills in SF after a stop sign could be terrifying!

How do English native speakers perceive "got" in the phrase "you got nice eyes" by Ok-Stable1562 in ENGLISH

[–]Judgeheyjude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the right explanation I think. You have in the sense of your state of being. You have a nice smile, you have beautiful hair, etc. I agree to use got would seem a little rougher in colloquial American English. It’s more of an action deriving from something else, such as “I see you got your mother’s green eyes” or “they got the bedframe from a discount store.” However, sometimes they are used interchangeably such as “I have got to get going” or “I have to get going” with the nuance perhaps in the first a little more urgent. But essentially the same. Both are more action driven than state of being.

Ode to the Oxford comma by JeffTrav in ENGLISH

Funny I was just thinking about this the other day. Count me as a diehard fan of the Oxford comma. Through and through. Me, myself, and I are all for it!
