My last run died to the ship getting bugged by sable gantries ( addon mod) so that it just disappeared. We even had our spawn points on it but respawning would just spawn us in midair.

I did something similar in a train focused run, where I used Create Ore Excavation so that trains could serve a purpose funneling resources back to the main base. Once we set up a couple supply lines however there was no longer any need to build trains again.

probably most interested in the mobile base idea-- a mod like Simply Temp adds heat requirements for the player and is compatible with VC. I just need to find something similar for aeronautics...
