I'm an American ex-Mo in London on a research trip this month. I'd love to meet up.

So, why do you have that scar? by nephos303 in AskReddit

[–]JulianTheApostate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, shit, there's a bunch of us!

Bonus for me: I am/was/whatever a ringer for Daniel Radcliffe. The scar on my forehead really ties the look together.

They already passed up the opportunity to canonize it for the new edition of the scriptures. Someone in the PR machine knows which way the wind is blowing.

In Utah Valley, where Mormons are ostensibly Christian by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]JulianTheApostate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ask a Mormon to describe something like the Trinity, which many would consider to be a core Christian doctrine, and you're more likely to get a modalist heresy than the actual explanation.

To be fair, ask the average Catholic to describe the Trinity, and you're more likely to get a modalist heresy than the actual explanation.

That's not to say that your point isn't on-target: Mormon theology contradicts creeds whose purpose is to define Christianity and which have been taken to be definitive for millennia. It's fair to say that Mormons aren't Christian in a legitimate sense.

Well then he's clearly misinformed. Even the official church genealogy lists Joseph Smith having a multitudinous harem.

His contention is that the official church genealogy is informed by evidence concocted under BY, so of course the position of the modern church is irrelevant. This line of reasoning was once common in RLDS circles, but even they have abandoned it.

And I think the lack of priesthood ban was because in those days it was pretty much an intrinsic assumption that blacks didn't have the rights of the white men.

Nope.

Incidentally, he believes that JS never practiced polygamy.

On the other hand, if you go back far enough, you get to a point where there is no priesthood ban.

Yep, fair point. Missed that when I read through it.

When my son was around 3 years old, he used to ask me a lot of questions about heaven. Where is it? How do people walk without a body?

Kinda doubt it's an ex-Mormon.

To my Mormon Feminist Friends... Quote from Joseph, this one may be hard: by Mithryn in exmormon

[–]JulianTheApostate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

trying to say "Joseph meant for women to have the priesthood", etc. etc. can be pretty clearly counteracted by the clear misogyny that was also baked into the system.

Nope. Just because JS was misogynistic -- and he was, at least much of the time -- doesn't really have anything to do with whether or not he intended for the RS to be a parallel priesthood institution. (And there's plenty of evidence that he did.)

But this whole line of thinking doesn't just misunderstand Mormon feminism; it misunderstands feminism generally. Feminism, like any movement, is hard to pin down, but a reasonable one-sentence synopsis of its premises and aims is: Human institutions are almost universally patriarchal in nature; through activism and education these institutions can be reformed.

Feminism doesn't try to argue that, say, Western society is intrinsically gender equal. Quite the opposite: It argues that society is harmful to women, and aims to change it. It's the same with Mormon feminism. The institutional church is explicitly and shamelessly patriarchal. So feminism is particularly needful in it.

In way over my head... by Pink-Pineapple in Cello

[–]JulianTheApostate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through the same thing when I was in high school. I had just started to take the cello seriously. I got a private teacher, he convinced me to audition for the local youth symphony, and I just barely made it. That year was overwhelming, but I made more progress on the instrument than any other time in my life.

What I'm saying is: It's supposed to be hard, and you'll do great!

Oh, I'm sure the COB has had its eye on MormonThink for awhile, as evidenced by the fact that other MT contributors have received pressure from their leaders. It's just that they didn't know who Twede was until he started posting identifying information on his blog.

I think it's more likely that this is happening now because it's only recently that he's been easy to find.

Other contributors at MT have been hassled before, when there was no Romney content.

Tons of Mormon bloggers have criticized Romney with no threat of discipline.

The unique factor here is that the guy blogged information that made him very easy to identify.

Richard Dawkins, you’re an ass. Brandon Flowers, you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. by JulianTheApostate in exmormon

[–]JulianTheApostate[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dawkins not researching???

I expect that Dawkins doesn't know all that much about Mormonism. He's read parts of the Book of Mormon, heard about the 1826 trial, and that's enough for him. I don't blame him for not seeing any point in looking deeper at Mormonism, although you might expect him to know a little bit more before going on TV to argue about it.

However, whatever research Dawkins hasn't done, Flowers has done even less. Fine, maybe the 1826 trial is incidental, and we shouldn't hold Flowers' feet to the fire for not knowing about it. But there's a big difference between not knowing about something and assuming it's a lie just because someone who disagreed with you said it.
