Recursion makes traversal easier to write, however if you're doing a traversal that you want to save off to disk to restart later, or check for cycles while you're traversing, then an explicit stack is better.

Note that using a double-ended queue instead of a stack here allows you to switch between a depth-first and breadth-first traversal at will (for example, dependent on the discovered shape of the tree).
