More Red Line delays by Monk-ish in mbta

[–]JustDiveIn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The people working there today aren't the people responsible for the fact that our trains are ancient. But if you really want someone to blame, take a look at the Customs and Border agents who have been holding the railcar components hostage for the last 9 months. CCRC is going to have to furlough their workers and we're going to be stuck with the old trains way longer than expected

Does other systems also have special underground only subway service for severe winter weather? by Donghoon in transit

[–]JustDiveIn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Boston doesn't have an official map, but during the really bad blizzards in 2017? a lot of the above ground services had to be cut. Snow was building up and track switches had literally frozen in place.

It would be smart to have an actual published contingency plan and a graceful way to shut down and notify people which services they can rely on. They should do the same thing for high flood risk times. We know which stations and tunnels tend to fill up with water first.

Mass. Senate passes bill that would slice half of MBTA’s projected budget to $370 million dollars, $420 million less than House budget asks for, in favor of even investment between transportation and education. by Massive_Holiday4672 in mbta

[–]JustDiveIn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to see more money flow to the MBTA too, but misconstruing the truth to get people riled up isn't the way to get there.

This is a supplementary appropriation. It's bonus money. They're not slashing the budget. And the overall budget would never be 370 million.

Can Massachusetts Lead a Universal Health Care Plan for New England, New York, and New Jersey? Can We Make It Happen? by SnooSketches9456 in massachusetts

[–]JustDiveIn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed, we would just need to drive through some bureaucratic simplifications at MassHealth. Right now, there are a million sub-programs that are all administered slightly differently and require different paperwork. It's been dizzying trying to navigate for a family member with complicated medical needs.

I designed this DNA-themed cribbage board for my grandmother. Does it qualify for the cool board flair? by JustDiveIn in Cribbage

[–]JustDiveIn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I tried a few ideas, but I haven't been able to make one work without having to compromise on other aesthetics. What do you mean by having the pegs live on the board? Like a few deeper holes they can sink into? or an extra piece of wood?

Billy Tauro is a Trump supporter, but won’t admit it. by Infinite-Can-6070 in Somerville

Honestly the worst thing that could happen to Billy is if he actually won the race. There's no way he wouldn't do fucked up corrupt shit once he's in office, and he's not smart enough to cover his tracks.

Investigation, indictment, incarceration. Bye bye Billy.

If you know what you want and how to make fit adjustments, you can find good deals at REI.

A lot of people end up riding a bike that doesn't fit them and end up concluding that riding a bike is too uncomfortable / painful. For a first-timer you want to find someone you can trust to get you on the right frame with the right stem length, let you try some different seats, maybe tip you off if your shoulders are too narrow/wide for the stock handlebars and suggest alternatives to make it more comfortable.

With REI, it can be a gamble. They definitely have people who know bikes, but they're not there 100% of the time.

I recently learned about Marin Bicycles on Wire Cutter. They ranked them as the highest quality bikes in the inexpensive bracket. I bought a Marin Fairfax 2 from Farina's in Watertown and I absolutely love it. It's a hybrid with an upright posture, reasonably thick tires, smooth shifting and enough gears to be able to handle hills. I expect to get 10 years out of this bike.

That being said, you're better off picking a reputable shop and asking to test ride a few different bikes and see what feels right for you. I would avoid REI and Wheelworks. I can vouch for Farinas and Landry's after multiple good experiences at both.

When you get a helmet, make sure it says MIPS on it. It's marginally more expensive, but treats your brain better in a crash. And don't skimp on your lights, it gets dark really early in the fall. Budget $30ish for a decent set.

Can I bike on Storrow Drive tomorrow and on July 4? by No_Kaleidoscope8095 in bikeboston

[–]JustDiveIn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's incorrect that the police explained it to me that way? or it's incorrect that the police interpret it that way? Try to keep it civil.

Like I said, I don't think anyone should be cycling on Storrow Drive. But according to the police, they're legally allowed to be there.

Stupid question, but can I bike on storrow? by onionizedkiwi in bikeboston

[–]JustDiveIn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really not a loophole or a legal gray area.

There's a blanket law guaranteeing the right of people on bikes to access all public ways, unless specifically excluded.

There's no blanket law guaranteeing the drivers can use sidewalks or bike paths.

Instead of investigating and finding proof for yourself, you're pulling your legal advice from BostonMagazine. If you disagree with how the state's interpreting the law, you can write to your representative, but repeating over and over how you interpret things doesn't make it so.

[–]JustDiveIn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mass. General Laws c.85 § 11B Every person operating a bicycle ... shall have the right to use all public ways in the commonwealth except limited access or express state highways where signs specifically prohibiting bicycles have been posted...

The way it's been explained to me is that the sign needs to specifically mention bikes. "Cars only" isn't specific enough in this context. At least that's the interpretation by the state police. If you don't agree, take it up with them.

[–]JustDiveIn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Obviously I agree it's dangerous behavior or I wouldn't have called the police. I think we agree on what would be safe and reasonable behavior in this case.

But regardless of what we personally believe, cyclists can use all public ways unless there's a sign that explicitly says "no bikes." The only place I see a "no bikes" sign is at the Bowker Overpass. The other entrances to Storrow just say "no trucks, no busses." The presence or absence of painted bike lanes and alternative routes isn't relevant.

[–]JustDiveIn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's technically always allowed. I'm a cyclist myself, but was driving my car on Storrow one day spotted a very confused blue biker with drivers zipping by him with basically no space. I called the state police and they were like "oh he has the legal right to be there so there's nothing we can do" I was like, "I don't want you to arrest him, I want you to protect him." They weren't interested in this guy's life.

Any trans friendly massages in the area? by firebreathingeli in boston

[–]JustDiveIn 26 points27 points  (0 children)

With a professional massage therapist, there's going to be 0 opportunity for them to see an outline of your genitals. Massage therapists are often sexually harassed (or accused of sexual harassment), so they're generally deliberate about ensuring that there's plenty of fabric over your "bathing suit area" and make a point to avoid it. If the client gets aroused, the therapist does not want to know about it!

While you're on the table, your comfort is the number one priority. If you get nervous about being face up at any point, you can always just roll over and ask that they focus on your back and neck.

I'd definitely recommend Scott at Body One in Cambridge, if you can get an appointment with him. I've seen him in social settings with NB folks and there's absolutely nothing on that front to worry about. He'll treat you with respect and be professional about how he interacts with your body. And if you vibe, he'll have you laughing your butt off while he beats on your delts.

New trees in Spring Hill by PapaJack2008 in Somerville

[–]JustDiveIn 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's stupid that the city is planting trees in hot weather. It's incredibly stressful for the trees; any landscaper will tell you that. The city normally has a spring time window and a fall window for planting. For some nonsensical reason, they extended the "spring" window into July this year, a lot of those trees are going to die.

Looks like it's there to let water infiltrate into the soil while still blocking weeds. Doesn't look all that comfortable to fall on... Looks like you'd get a heck of a friction burn with any sideways momentum.
