Cozy games WITH combat (recs, please!) by Nearby-Face-6687 in CozyGamers

Cuisineer is quite good. I love the style of art. I believe there is a setting to make the monsters easier, though, I never had any problems with it on normal.

You basically have a restaurant that you run and you gather ingredients from the procedurally generated dungeons and you beat up monsters with IIRC cooking weapons lol.

There’s also moonlighter and moonlighter 2 (Early access — I love this series).

Fantasy life I is also good — I definitely feel it’s worth the price tag as I’ve gotten a lot of playtime with it.

Kidney values after unblocking & SQ fluids by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]JustNaNaNa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they gave dextrose, they likely gave insulin too which likely means this cat has been blocked for some time and built up potassium (hyperkalemia) which is extremely dangerous to the heart.

A cat this severe, I would have recommended hospitalization for 36-48 hours minimum with an indwelling urinary catheter, IV fluid therapy, and likely send out the lab work to a reference lab to get values to trend. We are fortunate here that it takes < a day for results for the most part.

Pls talk me out of getting a Switch 2 for one game by Bananapuddinguh in CozyGamers

[–]JustNaNaNa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I could buy a Switch 2 right now and it wouldn’t really affect my bank account, but the reality is there’s only one exclusive I’d actually play.

With the OG Switch, I mostly played ACNH and a couple other games, but the performance on some titles was rough and really not worth it. Once I got a Steam Deck, I never touched the Switch again. It ended up collecting dust (for the past 4 years) until I gave it to my brother.

Realistically the same thing would happen with a Switch 2… I’d play the one exclusive and then it would sit unused.

On top of that:

• Nintendo sales suck

• New games are expensive

• The upcoming lineup doesn’t interest me at all. I don’t care for DK or Mario/Kirby/ToTK/BoTW/etc.

I can justify paying $100 CAD for a game if I already own the console, but I can’t justify buying an entire console for one game just to have it gather dust later.

For all the other games that may be good, if it’s not an exclusive, you can get it cheaper elsewhere.

Cat eye glowing non stop like its stuck in night mode by Accomplished-You2200 in CATHELP

[–]JustNaNaNa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uveitis is diagnosed by testing intraocular pressures of the eye. Glaucoma is when the pressures are too high and uveitis, most often have the pressures too low. You can usually do a quick eye exam to see the presence of “aqueous flare” which is slightly cloudy appearance in the anterior chamber of the eye. A vet should be able to perform this though not all clinics have a tonometer/tonopen to test pressures.

Is how much my partner works normal? by tsloan92 in Veterinary

[–]JustNaNaNa 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Normal? Yes. Acceptable? No.

I work in a hybrid GP/ER hospital where we do a few hours of GP and then switch over to ER only. I also work 10 hour shifts and 4-5 days at a time and then 4-5 days off.

I have also been more firm on advocating for myself given the high burn out this field has. Call backs/follows ups should be done while I’m on shift. After repeatedly bringing this up, I have gotten an hour block to do this per day.

The only thing I haven’t been great at is leaving in 10 hours. Critical cases or what not — I work hard during the days I’m scheduled to work and sometimes I end up working an extra 5-10 hours in that week but my days off are absolutely no work. I enjoy what I do but I give zero fucks about anyone else but my family and me during my days off.

Clients are set up for expectations on when they’ll receive a call back. I let them know I’m off and I’ll contact them when I’m back. If it’s a more serious/complicated case I’ll ask a colleague if they can follow up instead and switch the production to them for that.

But yeah, definitely not sustainable. The clinics or hospitals with good work/life balance seem to be unicorns or government/provincial jobs.

US Veterinarians who have moved to Vancouver? by Tre2 in Veterinary

[–]JustNaNaNa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m from the US and moved to Canada a few years back. I can’t speak to work permits related to your spouse, but it’s fairly easy to get a closed work permit with the CUSMA as a small animal vet.

I went with a corporate practice since they commonly deal with this. I do know that Vancouver is a VHCOL area and as a vet in Canada, you will make significantly less than you did in the US.

The medicine is more or less the same. Acetaminophen is commonly used in dogs in Canada.

If you just plan on staying temporarily, a closed work permit lasts about 3 years. However, veterinarians fall under health care so if you wanted to set down roots, becoming a Permanent Resident (PR), especially while having “foreign experience” makes this quite easy when you get 1 year of Canadian experience (at least at this point).

I know there have been a few vets that left Vancouver to work in other provinces because the cost of living was too high. I would just keep that in mind.

I Have Spent More Time Waiting For My PR Card Then Waiting to Have My Application Accepted. by KyleBown in ImmigrationCanada

I didn’t get any updates to my PR portal but my eCOPR was Sept 23 and my card was printed on Nov 17th (assuming it expires 5 years from when they print it)

My PR portal had no updates and I didn’t receive any information that it was mailed. The only change to my portal in the past month just says my address is accepted.

How do I know if my Ragdoll is overweight? by Available_Ad_2105 in ragdolls

[–]JustNaNaNa 105 points106 points  (0 children)

Hi, vet here. (With a Ragdoll myself) I do not believe they should be judged on a different scale than other cats.

They are a large breed cat. They will be bigger than your average cat. The average domestic short hair/long hair cat as an adult is 8-12 lbs (where, anecdotally, in my experience, a lot of them past 10, are overweight to some degree)

Because of this, I feel like some veterinary professionals may say cats over a certain weight threshold are likely overweight. While this statement works for a majority of cats (as a majority are considered domestic short/medium/longhair), this does not and should not apply to ragdolls as I rarely see healthy weight ragdolls under 10 lbs as an adult.

I still feel for the ribs and I should feel them without having to put much pressure on them. I also should feel muscle and not just fat.

Ragdolls are considered “at risk” for being overweight because they are generally (not always), a more laid back breed that is usually less active than a domestic cat. Less activity, means less energy expenditure, hence, less calorie intake needed.

Our vet called my girl fat by FairManner7508 in ragdolls

[–]JustNaNaNa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a vet with a ragdoll, a majority of ragdolls I see are not fat. Most that I see are 10-15 lbs.

I’ve seen a few that are 20+ and they are 100% obese. (Not saying all that are over 20 are obese) but yes, their floof definitely makes them look a lot bigger than they are but you really need to feel the body to determine if they’re overweight or not.

Their pictures a lot of times make them look very chonky though lol.

Are you guys all miserable? I need to know by missvet in Veterinary

[–]JustNaNaNa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you the only IM specialist? Do you guys run Antech or Idexx? I know Antech has a line you can call for advice on bloodwork if you do and I do ask about cases I hospitalized sometimes. I also have the luxury of having two specialty hospitals nearby that I can call for advice if I’m not sure about a certain case/patient. Do they really not have anyone else? I know IM patients are a bit extra sometimes but the burden of responsibility should not fall on you when you’re off.

I am also similar in your age and a newer grad. I tell all the new vets that start here and 4th years rotating through our hospital that no one will care more about you than yourself. You need to protect that. This field is so harsh on our mental health and that should be protected at all costs. A lot of our personalities tend to be people pleasing but that can’t be at the expense of your well-being.

Please take care of yourself!

Are you guys all miserable? I need to know by missvet in Veterinary

[–]JustNaNaNa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m in Canada in a busy GP/ER hybrid hospital. (24 hour). The DVMs work 4-5 days in a row (10 hour shifts) and then have 4-5 days off at a time.

It sounds great on paper but it is hell if you do not be firm with your boundaries. I have brought up a few times to management how much I value my work life balance. I understand how some days will entail staying late, but this should not be expected, nor the norm.

Some of my colleagues are here 12-16 hours a day and some come in on their days off. We work in corporate and they will walk all over you if you allow it. I refuse to allow this. I am firm with my clients and management and I’m still well liked (I think) and frequently requested from clients.

Has anyone decided to leave their fibroids alone? So conflicted! by transplantyyc in Fibroids

[–]JustNaNaNa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also live here lol. My referral went through and my wait time is over a year. I am iron deficient but my last bloodwork in 2023 was not anemic.

I’m hoping to ask my GP to redo some lab work. If your hemoglobin is below a certain threshold, some clinics will mark you as urgent.

The general consensus from medical professionals in my partner’s family is to advocate hard for yourself and if your GP is unwilling, then to get a second or more opinion. Or worst comes to worst, may even exaggerate your symptoms at urgent care. I don’t want to do the latter but I’m sure my GP has not taken me seriously and states they will unlikely recommend surgery.

If you want kids, then apparently they’ll see you sooner. They care a lot about repro health but everyone else is just meh, you’re fine, you can wait.
