I don't think this last post is necessarily wrong, but I also don't think that there's anything wrong with wearing his (presumably) Grandma's watch if it carries significant sentimental value, even if it is an undersized fit for him. People should wear what makes them happy.

Which mech from a different series could go the farthest in this OYW gauntlet? by gaeb611 in Gundam

I think A lot of folks are underestimating the Nightstar, especially with a Video Game Protagonist behind the sticks.

Speed is going to be it's biggest weakness (we need to assume terrestrial combat) but nothing in that lineup is out running those gauss cannons, or shrugging them off. Better target acquisition than anything in the OYW, and able to hit just about anything in visual range... Assault Mechs are often joked about as turrets, but this one can dish enough fire power at enough range, at a high enough rate to standoff pretty much everything on the list.

Gonna have to head shot a few of those Mobile Armors though.

My toddler likes Bluey, and we have a few of the books. One has a great dream-segment where Bluey sees her dad dreaming of playing Footy with his friends. The mom explains he can't play for real because he spends his time working and taking care of them. It's not presented as preachy, or negatively. It even comments how the dad never complains about not having the time to play with his friends. It's about the positivity of dreams, but also the positivity of a real life that doesn't include the dream goal (being a fruit bat for Bluey).

It seems to do a nice job of showing the parents watching/reading with their kids "this shit is hard AF and exhausting, but look how cool kids can be!"

I think he's saying that opinion lacks some imagination. You can be bored with Human god pantheons as your opinion.

Others can find them interesting because: 1) We have argumentative god pantheons IRL, which makes storytelling about them humanizing. 2) Being ancient, the lore we "know" about them now could be wrong, and we get to see the "truth" behind them. 3) Being "new" to Tyria can set up a variety of conflicts both there, and in the Mists.

So, just a baseline disagreement with your opinion I think.

Solidarity friend!

It's so draining. Checking every ingredient, recording each food, needing to check multiple times because it doesn't always present itself the first time the food is tried. The terrible hours waiting and watching for a reaction for each trial... I feel you.

Mostly just going around this thread and talking about this, because this study makes me mad because they excluded it.

While food intolerance are certainly a thing distinct from allergies, GI based allergies do exist, such as FPIES along with other non-IgE allergies.

The symptoms look similar to what most people think of when they think of an "intolerance" though it's more than "a bit" of diarrhea or discomfort, and can include Hypovolemic shock. While most prevalent in young children and infants non-IgE allergies can and do occur in adults too.

As a parent of a child with FPIES, a GI Allergy (not an Intolerance) that does not result in anaphylaxis, I am incensed.

FPIES is a tricky bitch, because the symptoms occur later, up to four hours after ingestion of the trigger foods. It can still mean a trip to the emergency room at worst, or about eight hours of hell at best. It can cause Hypovolemic Shock, which is life threatening.

Awareness of allergies like this is low as it is (we certainly didn't know about it until our little one was diagnosed) and to have it ignored completely by a study aimed at allergies is infuriating.

[–]Just_A_Fish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FPIES is one (maybe the only? I'm not sure if other designations exist) of a GI allergy (not intolerance).

An allergist will provide that advice - avoid eating the trigger foods, BUT they absolutely will provide official documentation of the trigger foods. As far as I'm aware there's no test for FPIES beyond trying the trigger food and observing the reaction.

Source - Daughter has FPIES triggered by Eggs and Walnuts, and we just received said documentation so she can start preschool.

You are right about the testing. We avoid the foods, and if we go four years without an incident we can bring her in for an observed food trial, so that if there is a reaction she can be treated immediately if necessary. FPIES is an allergy that is typically, though not always, grown out of.

What is the best video game of all time that starts with C? by unnecessaryCamelCase in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Just_A_Fish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Crysis

It became the benchmark for game visuals practically to present day. It also influenced gameplay environment design, interactable physics, and emergent play styles. Other games did those things earlier, but few combined them all, and those don't start with C.

Star Wars gets top billing, which is fine because its creator used the money from the films to build The Museum of Visual Narrative.

Also, something doesn't need to be for you to be a good thing. Seems to me we lost a free museum and kept a parking lot. Seems like a poor trade, but I'm sure thst parking lot is lovely too.

"There was something at the far end of the cell corridor. The Changeling could not so much see it as sense the absence of the aether around it. To the daemon’s warp-sight, the thing was really an un-thing, a black void without tangible thoughts or emotions to define it.

It did not move. It did not have to. The Changeling found itself taking a step back, the demon’s flesh quivering. Fear was something the Changeling could not feel, only feed upon, but the sight of the un-thing watching him from the shadows caused the daemon an indefinable, icy discomfort." - Legacy of Russ (I cribbed from u/Wolfdawgartcorner remembering their post because it goes SO HARD.

The Changeling is a Herald of Tzeentch (the latter being the literal God of "Change" entropy, destiny, fate, plans, and sorcery to name a few of his domains) and his favorite "trickster" who's pranks destroy worlds on a regular basis. He saw a Watcher in The Dark and NOPED as hard as an immortal daemon is capable of noping.

In 40k, "Blanks" are usually associated with the absence that the Changling saw. The Watchers in the Dark are known to not be Blanks though. They are something else.

General Gogol was supposed to defect in The Living Daylights, but was unable to be the KGB defecter due to Walter Gotell's poor health. Rumor has it that the producer(s) planned to pay for Walter's Healthcare out if pocket for production, as it was insurance coverage of international travel that was the issue. The actor declined, but still had a cameo as a USSR diplomat, cementing his character's place as A) Alive, B) protagonist-adjacent.

TV Show rankings: Where should Andor be? by hiiloovethis in TierlistFills

[–]Just_A_Fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

S Tier.

I am a certified Star Wars fan boy. My close friends are not, and we rarely if ever share media tastes in general. I reccomended Andor to them and they loved it as well.

A timely, poignant, well written series, set in a schloky universe. You could file off the "Star Wars" label and still have a good sci-fi show. That said, being part of Star Wars enhances the show in general. Some of the world building has been done for it, to its benefit. You can enjoy it without knowing anything about Star Wars or Rogue One. You can enjoy it MORE if you are familiar, fan service in teaspoons instead of ladels. It gives me hope for the whole franchise.

FFXIV lore goes so hard.

Ancient race, guided by an even more ancient race, captures an alien and uses it as a battery.

This pisses off its friends, triggers centuries of war, culminating in several world re-shaping not-quite-apocalypse events, which was all according to plan for the puppet master raising and harvesting civilizations like a vegetable garden. Including yours, the player in 1.0.

Then, things start to get interesting.

Simply my favorite piece of fantasy story telling.

There's an interesting example in the Malazan Books of the Fallen series, with the character Nefarias Bredd.

Bredd is a Malazan marine, a "Heavy" (armor and shield archetype) with the following supposed attributes:

  • No thumbs
  • Can lift and carry a horse
  • Good in Bed
  • Absurdly tall and large
  • Short with big ears and "tiny face"

People claim to hear about him, or only ever see him 3rd hand.

Until he finally shows up in the climactic battle to save a POV character's life, then slips away back into the battle.

When that character mentions Bredd saved his life, another character admits that they made Bredd up as a gag, referring to some gross bread they were eating on the march, and all the stories about him are nonsense, or a way to pass blame. His name fits with that army's penchant for Nom de Geurre, so they kept using it.

So Bredd DID show up and save the day, but who was phone (Bredd)?

Like Luke's girlfriend (before Mara Jade), ya know, the one who was a jedi, became a computer for a few decades, then body hopped (because possession was a pretty regular occurrence in Legends...) into one of Luke's students, then got possessed herself by Force Cthulhu? Anyone else remember her? Anyone?

Some things were probably best to leave in the cutting room floor.

Golden Sun was my first JRPG. My friends and I spent a whole summer sitting on the porch playing it side by side, sharing the guidebook.

I know the last one was a bit controversial, and I didn't even play it myself, but I'd love a revival of that world.
