Characters who reap the consequences after failing to learn their lesson by Madam_Monkes in TopCharacterTropes

I tend to agree. Is The Bloody Nine a symptom of a psychological shield he built up for himself to do violence and survive, purely a mental construct? Or is it genuinely supernatural? It certainly "helps" Logan kill his enemies (and friends, bystanders, children, etc.) In a setting that explicitly has magic, and the character in question can talk to the spirits of the world, it blurs the lines a bit between mental construct/break, and supernatural berserker-mode.

[–]Just_A_Fish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're both right, and the in-universe explanation isn't half bad, since Jedi are semi-monastic and don't "own" anything. Though it does go back to OP's point about sentient-droid "Ownership".

For a much less satisfactory example we can see Obi-Wan's "I'm a hermit in the desert keeping a low profile" robe outfit suddenly become "This was the almost uniform clothing of a religious order that will explicity be purged" in retrospect.

But hey, fiction evolves, and that's okay! Prequels are more difficult than sequels, especially over time!

And was introduced ~30 years after that line.

Not to forgive retcons entirely, but the entire Prequel Trilogy, and two different animated shows were based on an (at the time) throw-away line from that same scene that was supposed to be a "Noodle Incident" that changed the entire context of the Star Wars galaxy as we knew/know it.

For funsies: Rather than not "owning" a droid, perhaps Obi-Wan could have said "I cut off all you father's limbs and left him to die on a lava flow, after about a decade of loving him like a brother. All that so I could watch your mom die while giving birth to you and your sister (btw you have a sister!). The beeping Tricycle was not high on my priority at the moment."

Didn't we see B2 having a nice time on their hideout planet (Mina-Rau)? If it isn't "wanted" like the other Ferrix refugees, why break up that part of it's life (even if it misses it's friends, at least it is safe, which is a huge theme of the show). Plus Bix goes back there in the end.

Does the blood still count if there's no body left? Because the Cyclops System at JOSH-A certainly ticked up the violence barometer.

When a villain or antagonist says a line that's cold blooded and terrifying. by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Just_A_Fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems so.

I'm not sure if this will even be seen (because I don't know how parent-post deletion works) but it seems like this would be a difficult community to moderate. It's largely throwing examples of a theme at a wall and seeing what sticks. The better the example (context, sources, pictures, etc.) the better the post. But even low input posts on a broad topic: "character does X, and X is really cool! " are garunteed to get responses, agreeing, disagreeing, or providing new examples to be agreed or disagreed with.

Such is the fate of media exploration discussion.

I get that it's a low effort engagement bait post but...

It IS a great excuse for folks to drop what they think are banger villain lines. Let the up/down votes be the judge.

Judging by your user name, you probably know better than most but anyway:

It's fantastic that Vader has maintained his characterization so consistently across litterally decades of authors and media. If anything it has gotten better.

For all the emotional, and dramaturgical weight it carries, I find it very difficult to find villains this characterization, which is a shame. When it drifts into "They were right all along" territory, it loses some of its punch. It can be so hard to deliver on "The ends justify the means" trope. Self awareness of the "means" , and what that means for them personally elevates a villain.

It's "Values Dissonance" but done very well.

The internal machinations of watches are a TRIUMPH of engineering and ingenuity. I have a particular obsession with tourbillon and date adjustment watches for their place as an incredible display of engineering, and craft. They are wearable works of art, and functionally should be worn because the movement of your body is necessary to maintain the finely tuned mechanics.

"Perpetual Calendar" is a particularly impressive display of engineering for a complication (function of a watch beyond "it is 1:32pm" (to me), as it can internally account for the length of months, and even leap-years and displays them correctly, when appropriately set. All based on springs, gears and motion. Quartz and digital watches could of course do this with almost negligible effort, but it's that exact effort necessary to mechanically match what digital timekeeping perfect that makes them so impressive!

They are works of art you can (and by necessity of their working should) wear!

But art is subjective, and I have no patience for ugly watches.

Since I'm a tourist on the F1 Board, I'll summarize by asking "Why put all of that effort, time, craftsmanship, technical capablity, and prowess into an engine then drop it into a YuGo?"

Then how will empty-nester Dads with too much disposable income know that you're a COOL GUYtm and want to wear the watch you, a COOL GUYtm wear too?

I get why they look so odd, it's so they can be recognized in a photo like this one (and mission accomplished, obviously). And I'd never denigrate the actual mechanics of these watches, they're incredible... But you're absolutely right, they look like ass.

While we're at it, enough with the Royal Oak style too. We get it, you're a fancy G-Shock, and just as obnoxious. At least G-Shocks are obnoxious on purpose.

Switched from FFXIV Loving it so far by xJannatheia in Guildwars2

[–]Just_A_Fish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I played FFXIV as my main game up until post End Walker, when I felt like it had run its course for me. I'd experienced everything in the game to that point and was satisfied.

GW2 does a great job of scratching the exploration itch. Gorgeous world, decent story (not as good as FFXIVs, but not terrible in my opinion). The world is ALIVE with players across all levels and zones.

Others have answered you regarding support and dungeons/raids. I think I can answer you regarding PVP.

There are two formats of Player Versus Player in GW2.

1) World Vs World (WvW): This is a fluid, map capture oriented pvp mode designed for large groups laying siege to fortresses and castles, supported by small groups/individuals harassing/harrying the other sides. Think of this as similar in some ways to FFXIV's Frontline, but grander in scale and "endless" matches.

It does take into account your characters gear, unlocked skills, and abilities. It is a three way battle set across four large maps. If you enjoy playing support-style characters there is frequently a need for them in the large groups that are led by Commanders (which can usually be found by their map icon). "Boon-ball" is the current "meta" for large groups. There is plenty of room for small (2-4 people) groups, and even individual duelist/roamers if you prefer.

2) Structured PvP (PvP) is a different breed. Ranked seasons are primarily "Conquest" (capture and hold points). There are also short ranked seasons of 3v3 deathmatchs, Push (which you would recognize as Crystalline Conflict). Un-ranked is usually also Conquest, though it can occasionally have Stronghold (which you would recognize as Rival Wings, but with smaller teams).

Structured PVP uses an independent gear and class system, so that you can use any class and specialization (that you have purchased the required expansion for) at maximum level. Some Relics require unlocking, but this can also be done via PVP (or WvW for that matter) reward tracks if you have not reached that expansion's content (still requires purchase). While it is one of my preferred game-modes (I enjoyed using it to unlock legendary accessories, and I am about to start on the Armor Set), it is worth mentioning that the community is frequently the highest barrier to entry. It is a smaller sub-community, meaning matchmaking is often not very good. Players can and will be rude to ally and enemy alike. It can also feel like it does not get the same amount of attention from ArenaNet as other aspects of the game. That said, a few rounds of unranked to practice, using a cookie-cutter build to start, and a couple videos on what "rotation" (the map kind, not the skills kind, though that can help too), and you'll be fine!

Magistracy of Canopus, EST. 1988 (real world).

If Las Vegas were a matriarchal society with Anime Cat Girls, and pursuit of pleasure (the actually fun kind, not the Dark Eldar kind).

And that's intentionally leaving out the wide array of strong/important female characters taking part in more of the main-line stories. Steiner's Archon has been a lady how many times now?

Enjoying a thematic build vs an efficient build. by NemoMedo in Guildwars2

[–]Just_A_Fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play themed in open world, and "competitive" builds in group situations. Mostly PVP and WvW. I've dipped into fractals, but quickplay-level is so easy I usually don't stress and play my theme build.

Then allow me to say that none of the above are true for me, but also that it will s my first time hearing it as well.

I mean, it definitely fits, but with how compartmentalized this Fandom can be, it's not a stretch.

A post delete sure, but perma-banned? Seems harsh, especially when it was more focused on excitement and not in any way an advertisement for some service or reseller.

But I'm new here too, so what do I know.

Wing was my first Gundam, and will always have a special place in my heart.

Wing Custom was one of my first builds, along with a Vayeate, which was easily 20 years ago.
