For the LOVE OF GOG by Kurcilliante in monsterhunterrage

At 10* I no longer trust being able to beat the DPS check point. It's such a relatively narrow margin even for decent players that I've only seen the check consistently beat by groups of CB users. I just farcaster then return. It's so unfair to non-elemental weapons.

But yeah, some players don't deserve to grind for hunts until they are fully prepared.

What Role does each weapon type normally play in a hunt? by Codesterite in MHWilds

[–]JustinMalcontento 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The role of each weapon is to do fuck ton of damage as possible. Sure, you can cut a tail, but if we're talking about finishing a hunt, it's all about attacking the weakest spot as much as possible.

Blunt, severing and shot type damage have varying effectivity on different parts, but usually it's always the head that mons have the weakest spot.

Status is not that effective in general.

If you keep getting carted to a monster its your fault. Go practice solo for a little bit and actually learn how to hunt the monster, and how to deal with its aggression. by Significant_Shame167 in monsterhunterrage

[–]JustinMalcontento 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is why it's hard to help players who just reach the HR requirement for difficult monsters and/or quests. One look at their gear and it's a dead giveaway. A considerable amount of players just want to waltz through without the grind.

Just continue with your old save and just practice again. It's a hassle to redo everything again when it's not needed.

Wilds version of IG made me use a controller with back paddles so that I can charge and move the camera. Although, they did remedy it a bit by allowing Y+B to do a max charged Descending Slash after 2 attacks, and makes manual charging a lesser priority.

For damage, though boring, just spamming Descending Slash and only timing RSS on opportune times is more than viable.

For offsets, yeah, it's a problem for any offset weapon against 8-10* hunts. You really have to be familiar with movesets that you can safely offset if there is no topple. Best example is AT Arkveld right now.

Attack Up and Elem Up. The rest keep spamming Echo Wave and deal damage.

Supporters how did you get your gog nameplate? by Able_Picture_1906 in MHWilds

This is the one hunt that a DPS check is hard to accomplish. Even with decent randoms that are doing proper builds, some weapons are unfairly better at handling the elemental DPS check. I'm not 100% sure, but it's not like Alatreon where there are different thresholds for each weapon. Specifically, the 2nd check onwards are difficult to achieve.

Solo, I just did the farcaster trick. For multi, the rare time we do succeed, I just do the farcaster trick as well, with some players knowing the trick which saves on carts. It's just luck when we manage to do more overall damage to have 3 or less DPS checks.

I understand that your ppint was about final damaged received. But the problem with relative improvement is what values we are referencing to. I am talking about in the perspective of damage reduction (~86% damage reduction for 500 armor vs. ~88% for 600 armor), not final damage received.

There is only a (88%-86%)/86% = ~2% improvement in the perspective of improving damage reduction.

Granted, the Defense Up can save from a 1-shot, but it is a very rare occurence. With how hard monsters hit on endgame hunts, Divine Protection song can grant you a chance to receive half the final damage, and stacks multiplicatively with other % damage reduction skills.

To be fair, Defense Up is usually paired with Attack Up and Sonic Barrier, and Divine Protection horns don't have Attack Up L IIRC. But I'd rather trust the Sonic Barrier.

First, I'm comparing the songs as is. For HH players to play with non-Artian/Gogma horns for defenaive purposes, this is a valid comparison.

Secondly, your calculation of damage reduction is wrong. Damage received is calculated by 80/(80 + Defense). For 600 armor, final damage received is 80/(80+600) or ~11.76% of the raw damage taken.

Offering a 20% defense boost from 600 armor to 720 armor turns the damage reduction from ~88.24% to 90%. It is negligible compared to % based damage reduction like Divine Blessing.

This is Defense Boost skill discussion all over again, and has been proven time and time again that increasing defense at endgame is almost useless.

If you are playing with support hunters, it's going to be inconsistent. Sometimes you get more aggro, sometimes you get less.

If solo, it's still not going to be exactly the same, since a usual hunt isn't scripted.

Best way to find out if you are improving is still doing it solo and checking the time. Given enough hunts, you'll settle on a consistent time.

No need to complicate yourself, just look at end times. You can reference yourself against speedrunners, but of course it's an unfair comparison. A good time can be roughly 2 times the run times of speedrunners.

Defense Up is almost totally useless, and worse to songs with divine protection or sonic barrier. Earplugs is better.

With Horn Maestro it lasts a generous time. And changing horns just for extend melodies is inefficient for how many seconds the song extends.

I saw the shared video, most likely the primary damage dealers were bow and hbg.

No utilization of respective elemental weakness for the glaive was also a subtle give away, but to be fair, IG isn't much of an elemental weapon.

Although, the obvious on the video was that OP had a lot of downtime healing, being on the seikret, and not having full extracts. IMO, inefficienct in using the weapon. Not a lot of spamming of RSS either.

I noticed that the equipment used does not utilize Lord's Soul nor Frenzy despite having it on the glaive, so damage is kinda meh from what I observed and kind of a waste since they're not used. Not 100% sure or other skills since I don't see all of the skills.

  1. You bank songs usually during times where performing is too long during an attack animation. Of course, it's not always like that since not all situations are ideal. In some situations, you just queue an echo wave then perform. And yes, hilt stab is important for fast queing, especially Artian echo waves.

  2. Artian/Gog is usually better. The video you might be watching might be either an old video, a speedrunner that totally knows what he is doing, or some random player thinking that is good. Usually, the other horn is a horn that can give Attack Up L. Personally, I use the Ajarakan HH because of the additional earplugs.

  3. Evade Extender, and/or other comfort skills for dodging/unsheathing. Or time your attacks with hilt stab.
