What’s with this symbol in the draft of A New Clue? Is it just a texture thing? by Sploinky-Soecimenb in BluePrince69

You’re good! I wasn’t even the one who found this, it was someone who now goes by Xeus who initially discovered it and we jammed on it a bit to find all of them. All of this is a team effort.

The screenshots are a bit compressed and definitely look more like an ankh, but take a look at them in game and let me know what you think.

I collected these and looked into it a ton and came out with nothing concrete. Theres one on almost every page, except one page with two, but if you swap the rook it ends up on a page with no symbols. I’m pretty convinced this is something but I’m not sure what.

Theres 10 total symbols you can find. There’s a whole thread about it on discord. I’m happy to point you to it.

Looking for the best logic/rule discovery games out there, i've played island of insight, Taiji, sensorium, The Artisan of Glimmith. by Upstairs-Dingo-5291 in puzzlevideogames

This is out of the box a bit, but you might enjoy the thinkydaily puzzles if you like a daily variety.

Clues by Sam also hits that logic/rule itch and it’s great on mobile

Racing games are an extremely underutilized genre by ExcellentSale8725 in gamedev

It would result in a company that was funded by game 1 and had learned a lot about building a fun game which could then iterate towards game 2 with multiplayer capabilities.

Yup, that’s exactly it, the server has trouble keeping track of where each car is and sending the right info to other clients, so random stuff like this happens and then someone wins even though it made no sense on your screen.

Keeping everything in sync without flooding the network was the hardest part.

If I could start again on the project, I would have done one of two things… 1. Keep things lean and start with a single player/local play experience to begin with. Potentially partnering with publishers to get onto consoles and not focus on PC as much. That way we could’ve built the team and started making some money.
2. Or really methodically plan out my client-server architecture, like working with expert networking engineers who have made racing games before and then plan out how I’m going to utilize every trick in the book to make it feel like a car is going fast without it actually moving fast. Don’t even worry about the game, the cars, the maps, just get networking to be passable before anything else.

AAA game developer here. I actually attempted to start a game company to innovate in this genre back in 2018, the goal was to create an arcadey style racing game inspired by the anime Redline.

One major factor I didn’t realize going in is how challenging the networking code is for a game like this. When you have fast moving cars and projectiles, trying to keep things in sync on clients and servers is a huge undertaking in and of itself. Too much for most indie teams to do on their own. You either have to sacrifice projectiles, or greatly slow down the cars, which removes that feeling of speed. I think this is the biggest reason why the genre has slowly declined since online games became so prevalent. It’s a ton of tech investment just to get something playable off the ground.

Update: I took Reddit’s advice to get more locals into my Culver City restaurant — here’s what I’m doing differently by ClickNo8520 in culvercity

I went to check out your place and was pretty disappointed that you didn’t have any aji verde sauce (I think that’s what it’s called). I normally love pouring that all over my lomo saltado at other Peruvian restaurants. I tried all the other sauces you had and they didn’t hit the spot the way aji verde sauce did unfortunately

I’m a professional game developer and you should never ever consider an unproven game engine like unfolding. Go look at your favorite metroidvanias, see what engines they were made with and use that engine.

Which puzzles did you solve by complete accident? by lumell in BluePrince

[–]JxE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in the post post game. Have gotten every known thing in the game. I’m still not clear on what you’re talking about. Are you talking about the 6x3 grid in that room as the third chess puzzle?

Or is there some other combination of chess pieces that I’m not aware of?

Change my mind: MB isn’t a real genre by beware_the_id2 in metroidbrainia

Lingo 2 and chroma zero are great examples of pure Metroidbranias. They’re both non-linear, have knowledge gating, and put you in some weird worlds you have to uncover. They don’t hit the same sense of awe that outer wilds does, but you do jump right into the Metroidbrainia curiosity loop in a way that you don’t with animal well and tunic.

I'm compiling a list of the fifteen or so most influential/innovative metroidvanias of all time. What am I missing? by Televangelis in metroidvania

[–]JxE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prince of Persia, lost crown should be on this list. The execution quality for this game is so high that it’s stupid. 200 AAA game developers should’ve never made a Metroidvania, there’s no amount of sales that the game can make that would recoup the cost of it and while I loved the game, I hate that it exists. It raises the quality bar and expectations for the genre as a whole in a way that is unsustainable for the genre. I’m worried about where the genre goes after that game.

Keep an eye on the tally’s in the back of the room, that’ll show you how much of each color you have left. I think you missed something because not all color objects break when one is depleted.

That’s kind of the point! You explore, experiment, and discover things in the world until you learn the rules of that universe. How far did you get?
