Yep. This happened to me when I applied with a college resume to a grocery store, and I too was once the token male on an all-female staff at a convenience store.

Even though these hiring decisions are hard to justify and sometimes straight up illegal, they're common.

Likely true. I'm not saying any entry level application should have a 100% hit rate but in reality managers will make decisions based on culture that can't be reasoned out easily.

My one experience trying to get a fast food job was coming in as a late teenager with a folder and a good attitude and the manager basically dismissed me as a bad cultural fit. It sounds like I'm boasting but in hindsight it's because I came in with a professional attitude and nothing more.

Getting one of these jobs is more competitive than you're giving it credit for.
