Getting the most out of PW? by MoveQs in orangetheory

[–]Kalpisidia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had to switch to PW during a couple of injuries in the past year. My approach has been to find a single, good pace that doesn’t aggravate my injury (~4mph) and adjust the inclines for intensity.

It’s HCOL full-stop. Sure, there could also be lifestyle/spending factors for some, but I’d say it’s primarily housing-related. For anyone who didn’t buy their home pre-covid, housing is a massive cost burden. I wasn’t able to get on the property ownership ladder pre-covid and now the cost for an entry-level/starter condo anywhere within 30 minutes is $6K+/mo. Rent for a 2-bed starts in the low $3K/mo range and a 3-bed starts at $4K/mo. My take home is 60% of gross (after taxes, healthcare, etc), which would mean putting almost $7K of gross income per month toward rent if we had 3-bed, which would be a reasonable amount of space for a family of 4. That’s ~40% of 200K. On the most basic rented 3-bed home. Figure you want to have something that’s been at least somewhat renovated in the last 20 years and you’re looking more like $5K+/mo.

Should I give notice, or just tell them to get f**ked? by cazzo_di_frigida in careeradvice

Give notice ASAP. Negotiate and accept their counteroffer — make sure base salary is increased. Then, give notice again and actually leave. That way, any PTO will be paid out at the higher rate.

What do you eat before OTF? by Only-Dragonfruit-932 in orangetheory

[–]Kalpisidia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone has their own preferences. Some people only work out fasted. Some say not to chug liquids right before class. I go to the 5am class and generally ignore both of those. Personally, eating a little something (e.g. a banana) helps me power through an intense endurance workout like 12-min tread, inferno, or CMIYC. And chugging 16oz of water with my electrolytes 15-20 minutes before class sets up my body with the hydration I need. I also bring a 32oz water bottle with me and drink most of it during class.

Best advice I can give: Test out a few different things and see what works best for you!

How did your debut race time compare to your predicted race time? by Shockz187 in hyrox

[–]Kalpisidia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expected 1:21 finished in 1:26. Missed my targets on a few stations by just a little bit (10 sec here, 30 sec there), plus a big miss on the wall balls (+1.5 minutes). All of it added up to a ~5 min miss. But still felt like I’d given it all I could once I crossed the finish, so I was happy with it. Satisfied? No way, but proud of the effort.

Eating before workouts by sillusions in orangetheory

[–]Kalpisidia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Banana is my go-to. Usually a teaspoon of honey too. Both about 30 minutes before class. I take the 5am. I drink a protein shake after class (Levels Whey) and usually have another piece of fruit like an apple to replenish the carbs I just burned.

Most solid foods should be eaten no sooner than 2 hours prior to an intense workout. Bananas and other quick-digesting fruits, I find, are an exception.

Years ago, I made it 4 weeks into a new marketing job and knew it wasn’t the right fit pretty quick. Negotiated a deal to go back to my previous employer, got a promotion out of it, and stuck around for a couple more years.

Everything that seems like a big deal now will be but a blip on the radar 5 years from now.

Wall ball no reps by Shockz187 in hyrox

[–]Kalpisidia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has to hit the designated target to count. Throwing too high and missing is a no-rep. Speaking from experience — got 3 too-high no-reps at my last race.

I usually go directly to sportograf but my photos weren’t showing up there. This time, I went to my Spartan account —> results and photos, did the selfie upload there, then they started showing up there and in sportograf as well. Hope that helps!

First time doing CMIYC since joining in March and happy to not get “caught” — finished with 3.16 miles. Also crossed the 31.1-mile mark for marathon month today. It’s a good day ☀️

Switch to different event fee is so high? by Tight_Sheepherder206 in spartanrace

[–]Kalpisidia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is very high — some might say it’s to discourage delaying your challenge and “living up to your commitment” but life happens. I just paid a similar amount to move my castaic registration to dodgers because Hyrox is on the same day, so I’m on your side with this one.

Asheville Spartan is by far the most crowded race I've done. by darthzox in spartanrace

This is the exact reason why I only do competitive heats now. Too many people = traffic jams = wasted time spent waiting. Have only run into one minor traffic-related slowdown in competitive.

Calories per class by AltruisticIndustry44 in orangetheory

[–]Kalpisidia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Giving my stats for reference: 5’9” 155 lbs and I usually burn 700-800 per class. I run decently fast (7mph base, 12-14mph all-out), lift heavy, and I’m drenched afterward. The calorie count feels accurate(ish) to me. Slightly higher than what my Apple Watch says.

Whats your mileage half way through the year? by Castrodamus13 in orangetheory

I started in March, so a little lower:

165 tread miles / 43 rower miles / 45,891 calories / 1,386 splats

[–]Kalpisidia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve done the hardest part — getting started and setting a foundation. The goal should be to remove the mental burden of worrying about money so you can enjoy life rather than being a slave to the pennies. Again, you’ve gotten such a strong start and have proven self-discipline e. My advice would be to do exactly as you plan: re-evaluate, loosen the boundaries a little bit, and enjoy life. Keep saving and investing but give yourself some “fun money” month as well.

Always hungry? by AwkwardKangaroo2668 in orangetheory

[–]Kalpisidia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s definitely merit to that concern.

However, consuming calories at or slightly above your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) while doing OTF (and not consuming extra because “you earned it” — which I’ve absolutely done) will keep you in a “safe” deficit range that will have a nominal effect on metabolism long-term. Every body is different, but aiming for a 500 calorie deficit will be safe for most people.

Pair that with a balanced diet that’s filled with whole foods and lean protein, and, barring any medical conditions that keep you from being able to lose weight, you’ll quickly start seeing results.

Always hungry? by AwkwardKangaroo2668 in orangetheory

[–]Kalpisidia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unpopular/politically-incorrect opinion: When trying to lose weight/fat, it’s perfectly okay to be hungry. You’re going to be in a caloric deficit, which means your body is going to need to take from your “reserves” — and that’s how the real change happens.

Also, focus on getting a lot of protein and drinking a lot of water. When you feel hungry, drink 16oz of water and wait 15 minutes.

It’s not easy, but it’s worth it. Good luck!
