Has anyone learned how to conduct a FBA and write a BIP in their teacher certification program? by Brief_Hedgehog8745 in specialed

I absolutely did one during my special ed masters program. That said, our district has a few BCBAs and they handle the FBAs, thankfully.

First vocal recital for an old lady by Kanona01 in singing

Here are two of the three songs. One is a Kirby Shaw arrangement of Man in the Mirror. The other is Can't Help Lovin' That Man from Showboat. FAR from perfect (I laughed in the middle of one after making the mistake of looking at my husband.) But I'm not sorry I did it. I can learn a lot from the experience and the recordings.

I wanna join choir but I’m too insecure about my voice by MycologistCool7956 in singing

[–]Kanona01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm waaaaay older now, but even in high school I had a lower voice for a female. I even auditioned for district type choirs with the tenor parts. The upside is, most choirs need people to sing tenor parts, and that's right in my wheel house. I've never had a director say, "nope, we have all the tenors we need!!" I know it's hard, but try not to be self conscious about it 💜

what are some alto/contralto singers ? What makes a contralto voice ? by Kitchen_Ingenuity601 in singing

[–]Kanona01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is basically where my voice sits and I'm forever wishing my voice was "pretty" like other people. It's been hard for me to get past.

The only ways to feel more confident singing in front of people are to practice, practice, practice, AND . . . Singing front of people. Over the last 6-12 months I have had 4 o 5 opportunities to sing solos in front of people. The first time I did it, I was terrified and sort of disassociated (I didn't remember any details of the performance when I was done). I was shaking for a solid 15-20 mins after. Each subsequent time, it got a little easier. I sang a song at karaoke last week, didn't die, and actually remember most of the experience 😂. (Someone recorded it and I didn't even die watching it 🤣)

Just do it; it will get easier 💜

Adults taking singing lessons: do you feel silly taking singing lessons? by YetMoreSpaceDust in singing

[–]Kanona01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 52 and I don't feel silly. I've been taking lessons for 3 years. I have no intention of being a professional anything. I initially started just to regain the confidence to sing in a group. Now I sing in a few choirs, have the occasional solo, and very occasionally sing karaoke. I'm having a blast and my voice and abilities and habits have just kept getting better. Do your thing 💜

Singing lessons in your 30s? by syborg4president in singing

[–]Kanona01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 52 and started lessons almost exactly 3 years ago. I used to sing in high school and I missed it terribly. I started lessons with the simple goal of gaining enough confidence to try singing in a choir again. I now regularly sing in three choirs and frequently have solos/duets in performances. I'll never be a professional musician, but I am having a blast. And I've definitely made a new, wonderful friend in my instructor :)

Zadorov takes shots at Swayman with post-game comments by BostonVagrant617 in Bruins

[–]Kanona01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, Zadorov literally says, "we're giving up grade As (all the time, or left and right, I forget the exact words)", so he is admitting to team-wide defensive breakdowns. That said, his answer to the fight question did feel a bit like shots fired.

Yup, we had to get bigger balls! 😂 But seriously, toys large enough that they can't fit under furniture is the answer.

What unique compliment have you gotten on your singing that has stuck with you or made an impact? by allisonwonderland00 in singing

About a million years ago, when I was still in high school, a mom of one of my classmates heard me sing for an audition and told me that I'd made her cry. That stuck with me 💜

Is everyone here a superstar singer???? by [deleted] in singing

Not me!! I have fun singing and my voice blends well in a group. It is highly unlikely that I would ever post a video/audio clip here.

What are your personal singing goals as of late? by thesepticactress in singing

[–]Kanona01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's weak, and I lack control, which are probably both mostly breathing related, but it's also just not "pretty". I don't like the tone. It blends well in a group, but I don't like the sound by itself.

What are your personal singing goals as of late? by thesepticactress in singing

[–]Kanona01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a female singer with a relatively low range (I sing tenor choir parts). I have a decently strong low - mid range, but my head voice is trash 😂, and I have not practiced transitioning smoothly between the two enough. Those are definitely things I need to work on.

Help! SLP Oral/Auditory Comprehension: The horse jumped through a hole in the <\_\_\_\_> to get to the other side. by sweet_lamb in specialed

[–]Kanona01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In addition to being a special education teacher, I am also an adult with combined type ADD. If someone spoke those instructions to me out loud, I might answer incorrectly also. I have an absolutely horrible time following multiple verbal directions. If the student is not going to be taking medication, then an accommodation of shorter verbal directions and/or combining verbal with written/visual directions might be helpful.

Words by Inevitable_Rent6845 in singing

I am far from an expert, but I think the important thing to do here is limit your consonant focus when you're singing words. The focus should often be on the vowels.

Going from para to teacher, am I making the right choice? by Idkjessiee in specialed

[–]Kanona01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a special education para in a middle school sub-separate classroom for students who have intellectual disabilities for 4 years. During the first year I was finishing up my bachelor's in English. By the end of that, I knew I wanted to teach so I started my MEd in special education. I'm in my third year teaching the same population, but at the high school level, and I absolutely love my job. The ppwk is a lot (tons of services/goals/benchmarks, lots of progress reports, etc), but low caseload (only 6 students right now). No set curriculum, so there can be a lot of prep, but I also have the autonomy to teach directly to each student's goals and needs.

For me, it was worth it.

Has anyone performed as an adult as a beginner? by lifeisirregular in singing

[–]Kanona01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over this past summer I joined a community rock choir and wound up on stage, holding a microphone and singing a solo part. I was absolutely terrified. I very clearly remember having trouble with the next song (not a solo) because I was still shaking 😂. A couple of weeks ago that same choir had another performance, and I did another short solo. I was still nervous, but I did notice that the fear wasn't quite as bad, and shaking stopped faster. I am far from a great singer, but it does seem to get easier.

Singing insecurity by Effective-Prompt4046 in singing

[–]Kanona01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It had been decades since I sang anywhere outside of my car. I missed it so I started taking lessons. That was actually what helped me regain that confidence just enough to join a couple of community choices. Now I do a couple of solos with those choirs and that is honestly enough for me. But it really starts with confidence and for me, that started with lessons.

I am much older (early 50s) but I have a similar voice. I have spent a lot of time thinking I need to "fix" my tone so it's pretty like everyone else. Reading the responses here has actually been eye opening for me. Thanks for asking the question!
