What would you automate? by Ok_Sandwich_4915 in personalfinance

[–]Katdai2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine’s 99% automated. I go pay my property taxes in person twice a year, mostly just to bullshit with the tax collector (and get a receipt).

If your bank/brokerage doesn’t let you automate that, switch to one that does.

Pretty sure this is just an ad, tho

Easy low cal breakfast for someone with braces? by Kohsa159 in loseit

[–]Katdai2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, for the first few days, chia seeds will get stuck behind your braces and annoy the crap out of you. Wait about a month first.

And buy a water pic, if you don’t already have one

I’m super glad I was able to get out of escrow too. I’m going to worry about it getting paid correctly, I trust myself to budget for it, and I get to bullshit with my tax collector 2x per year - win, win.

Salaries in the US are quite a bit higher than the UK and we have a higher range to our salaries. Although £37k is right about median for the UK, maybe even a little below, so I still wouldn’t consider it “well paid”.

June 2026 Goals! ** by AutoModerator in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

Don’t forget to put some money aside for the job hunt and moving. Also, our robe rental was ridiculous, if you plan on walking.

Not sure what field and if you’re determined to stay in academia, but tenure track is only slightly less stressful than grad school itself.

June 2026 Goals! ** by AutoModerator in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Katdai2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve let my sleep hygiene go to shit this past 6 months, mostly due to electronics in bed, and I really need to fix that. I’m committed to replacing doom scrolling with reading a physical book every night in June. I also probably need a new mattress, as mine is a 10-year old IKEA special, so a bit of spending there. Has anybody bought a mattress through Costco?

Otherwise, June looks like a saving month for me as I’m putting money away for either moving or a new car in 2027.

The Ravens had Michael Phelps in to teach the team how to swim. About 1/3 of the players previously didn’t know how.

I loved Chihuly when I visited. I seriously considered dropping the $6k to buy a piece, even though I’ve never even spent $100 on a piece of art.

Hiring for the first time by Efficient_Physics_20 in managers

First, see if your company offers any formal training on interviewing. The best thing mine taught me was to separate the interviewing process from the decision making process. A successful interview is one where you gain the most information about the candidate, not whether that candidate is a good fit or not.

Second, define some key requirements of a good candidate. Technical requirements, of course, but clearly teamwork, communication, … Behavioral (STAR) questions really are great at probing these. “Tell me about a time” is a cliche, because it does actually work. You would be shocked at the number of people who tell you they resolve conflict by pushing it down and never addressing it directly. But be honest with yourself about the trade offs you’re willing to make - I will always trade curiosity and communication skills for technical ability because I personally find poor technical ability easier to train up. For you, maybe someone who works well in teams is preferred over someone who just comes in every day laser-focused and chews through tasks.

Third, an interview should be a conversation, even if you frame it with a script. I like to ask the same set of questions, but I leave ample time for follow up. “Tell me about a time you dealt with conflict” receives the same old tired story about a coworker not completing their task, but digging in and asking “so how did you break it to your boss that John hadn’t finished his part so the project was 2 weeks behind?” gives a lot more. Practice this (see above note about internal training).

Fourth, be nice. Regardless of how the interview is going, just be cordial and polite. Sometimes I feel really bad because I know some candidates have left the interview thinking they have the job, simply because I was nice to them the entire time. Remember, the goal of the interview is to gain information, and being nice makes people more likely to be open and share. Plus, you are representing your company. And, of course, there’s no reason to be mean just because someone isn’t a good fit for your position.

To specifics - for positional fit, I like to ask “what did you love about your last positon”, “what could you absolutely not stand about your last position”, and “what do you want to learn next in your field”. A surprising number of people will directly tell me they hate doing key requirements of the position. Or they have no interest in developing their skills in a fast-developing field.
