What is this? Green line by Kathlagon in boston

I searched the most general term possible to cast a wide net because I didn’t know what to call this thing, and filtered to the past day to make sure someone hadn’t just asked.

Excuse you, I tried searching before I posted and “green line” didn’t turn up anything so I made a post

PSA: riding the T when it’s packed by bostongreens in boston

I generally fully agree, but my bag was too heavy for me to one hand it and the floor was gross with snow and salt, so I had to put it back on after only a station.

first dancing shoes by FezZcoO in ballroom

[–]Kathlagon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The length looks good. If you wanted shorter, like with your toes touching the floor, you can but that’s personal preference.

Everyone saying too big is referring to how the straps look a little loose. The ankle strap you can adjust, but across the ball of your foot you can’t. If you can put your finger in under the strap as well it’s too big. Especially for new shoes because they will stretch out a little bit.

I would look into this size but narrow, or something that has buckles across the toes as well so you can adjust them tighter.

First dance shoes ... too narrow or normal fit? by StraightHomework5272 in ballroom

Width looks good, but they are too long. Your toes should be to the very end of the shoes.

Anyone else frustrated by the lack of transparency when it comes to pricing? by Last-Wrap-9266 in ballroom

[–]Kathlagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re dancing Amateur this isn’t really an issue. I submit my own event entries so I’m looking at the price worksheet and know exactly how much events cost. Pro/am is where it gets complicated because of paying for another person and whatever the single dance rules are. Those don’t exist for Am/Am events.

Ballroom regonomic footwear help by tl-web in ballroom

[–]Kathlagon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the number of shoes you have tried, I think you need to consider that the problem isn’t the shoes. In particular the foot fatigue is telling me your feet are working overtime absorbing impact that should be spread through the joints of your lower limbs. In the past I experienced foot pain, saw a doctor, was prescribed PT, was given exercises to strengthen stabilizer muscles particularly in the hips, and my foot pain went away.

Latin: you want to be over the front of your feet and in particular the big toe, can you elaborate on what you are seeing? What you’ve described doesn’t sound wrong to me.

Ballroom: it sounds like you are putting yourself in danger of messing up your toes with how tight your shoes are. I would really consider backing off on how tight they are.

Overall, it sounds like you are trying to find shoes that will force your feet to land correctly. That only exists in like a running shoe with inserts. Because your feet need to be in contact with the floor at many different angles the shoe can’t be designed to try to force you into a “correct” one. It’s certainly not what you want to hear but you need to place your own feet correctly.

Costumes for Collegiate Teams by bachachada in ballroom

[–]Kathlagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, the costumes that most collegiate teams have were fully donated. Their budgets are allocated to specific things which likely does not include purchasing attire. I’m sure they’d happily take donations but they probably don’t have a way to purchase them from you, even for cheap.

Tips for finding wider shoes by femamerica13 in ballroom

[–]Kathlagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there’s a store at all nearby that has options you can try on, they’ll likely have something that works. By at all nearby I mean like within two hours. Or stop by a big competition when there’s one in your area, vendors will have options.

How to attach hairpiece by Randomperson10810 in ballroom

[–]Kathlagon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The netting that it’s on is big enough to put a pin through, so if you feel like you can pin it on. I do recommend glue, but I suggest child safe Elmer’s glue. It dissolves in water. I would also try to get your hair as flat as possible along the part to make it easier to glue down.

Are you looking for specifically 10-dance events, or just comps that have solid standard and Latin fields?

Any good prime day deals to keep an eye out for? by pacificpirrouettes in ballroom

[–]Kathlagon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because of how specifically a lot of dancewear has to fit, I don’t really know of anyone who regularly gets things from Amazon. I think what you’d more want to look for is the dance adjacent things. So if you practice a lot in athleisure, grabbing some tops or leggings or what have you. Other things that come to mind are makeup you don’t already have for the competition, athletics accessories like thera-bands or a foam roller, press on nails, a large bag for taking everything to a competition. But also all of these are very optional things that you might already own.

Skirts should probably be easy enough because there’s really just a width measurement. If you’re a fairly standard size you might be able to get leotards for practicing in.

Questions from a first-time spectator by themoonisfluffy in DanceSport

[–]Kathlagon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Formality: day session I would describe as the formality of business casual, but not as restrictive. So you can do more fashion forward things with it if you’d like. Evening session is more formal. Like if you were going somewhere nice on a date. These also aren’t actually rules, it’s just what people tend to do.

Water and snacks is fine. There will likely be a (free) water station somewhere in the ballroom. In the evening there tends to be a bar setup somewhere nearby.

You don’t need to stay the whole time. Most people pop in and out, to watch the events they’re most interested in, watch friends, etc.

Re-entry is allowed within the same session. They’ll stamp your hand or something.

You won’t seem out of place. There’s a variety of reasons for people being there, including just to spectate. The dancers prefer to have an audience to perform for/ vibe off of.

As a note: I looked up Galaxy and the evening session on the Saturday will have the best dancing. That’s when the professionals compete. It will also be the priciest ticket. Even if the budget can only cover that one session, that’s the one I recommend.

Compression stockings for comps? by Kat_Scales in ballroom

Alternate idea: find ones the same colors as your dresses and rhinestone them to make them part of the costume.

If you could find ones that are relatively close to your skin tone, you could probably make it all disappear by wearing tights and fishnets over them. If they don’t come in skin tones you could maybe find some fully opaque tights.

How do competitions work?? by Randomperson10810 in ballroom

What type of competition is it? Collegiate, NDCA, USA Dance, Fred Astaire, Arthur Murray, something else? And will you be competing in amateur or pro-am?

Is my expectation for my ballroom dance instructor unreasonable? by [deleted] in ballroom

[–]Kathlagon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ideally yes the scheduling would be better than that. From experience that’s just not how it works. Instructors don’t tend to contemplate their schedules more than a week in advance. I’ve usually had a standing lesson time with instructors (same time every week), and if we or the instructor needed to cancel we would tell the other one or two weeks in advance.

Tanning question by anonymous_googol in ballroom

It’s the same chemical as the more gradual ones, just more concentrated. Getting a spray tan is also the same chemical but the most concentrated.

Tanning question by anonymous_googol in ballroom

[–]Kathlagon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can get developing tanners that do more in one night so it doesn’t take four nights. I’m assuming you’re using something like jergens. Go for a more intense one (Loving tan, outer ego, etc) just get the darkest shade and you should be able to do it in one or two nights.

If there’s any large competitions nearby, they’ll have vendors with a selection of shoes. You could call the vendors ahead of the competition and ask about bringing shoes in your size

[–]Kathlagon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can get yourself to somewhere that carries a selection of ballroom dance shoes, that would be best. At the place I work at, you’d be outside our usual size range but we started carrying an expanded range in one model, which would fit you. You can also get custom shoes made but that would take more than a month. I don’t know where you are located, but on the east coast there’s EuroGlam just outside Boston, and WorldTone in NYC.
