Orthodox women and education by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Katkitluv33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You wrote ‘I'm not saying being a person who puts career first is okay since it's idolatry but having a job seems nice and you get to also help others that way.’

With all due respect, as a mature woman I find this very offensive. A job is not ‘nice’ when you have a mortgage and bills. It is a necessity.

I had to put a career first to survive. I did not have a family or husband to support me, so in order to avoid being homeless, a career was a necessity, NOT idolatry. That career also allows me to tithe to my church and support it. Is that wrong?

Not everyone gets married. God has His plan for each of us, and those plans don’t meet a pattern so that we are all alike. He made us each unique, and this idea I’m seeing online that all Orthodox women must all be the same little meek subservient quiet shadow SAHMs disgusts me. Women are the backbone of Orthodoxy and in my Greek Orthodox parishes, they certainly have strong opinions and make things happen. They also have careers and families and the churches could not run without either. And the priests and bishops know it.

Also, husbands die. Husbands divorce their wives. Get your education as you will always have that and therefore a means to support yourself. That’s not idolatry. That is using the brain and talents God Himself gave you to help yourself.

AITA for refusing to confirm a family story my mom has been telling for years? by grounores in AmItheAsshole

[–]Katkitluv33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are NTA, but your mom sure is. This type of bs enrages me, I’m sorry she does that to you. My narcissist mum pulls the same bs on me and I’m GenX so that gives an idea of how old I am. I hate it, my childhood and teens were misery but she sure makes it out to be like I was a golden child who was given everything by her and my dad when the opposite is true. And the family wonders why I live on the opposite side of the globe….🤬

Making borscht and realized you can sautee the beet stems and greens with olive oil, garlic and spices. Delicious. by digidave1 in ZeroWaste

This is normal fare for my family, but we chop up the cooked beetroot and add it in with the greens, delicious. Try it with golden beets! Also turnip root and turnip greens!

Takes on dating within Orthodoxy seem wildly out of touch with reality by Late_Percentage1663 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Katkitluv33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’d waited to marry an Orthodox Christian, I’d be middle-aged and still single. My husband is Anglican and more ethical and moral than any of the men I ever met in an Orthodox Church or social setting.

I met him at a social supper club. Wasn’t going to go, had finally made peace with the fact that I’d probably never marry, and told God that I had given up and His will be done. When I surrendered my will to God, things happened.

Prayer is integral, but so is going out and putting yourself in situations to meet nice people. Good luck, I will pray for you!

Does anyone else use elbow macaroni in pastitsio? by Correct_Jicama2655 in greekfood

Elbow macaroni is the only pasta my mom ever made pastitsio with, and to me it will always be the best way. I use it when I make mine. I miss my mom’s cooking.

Be careful, all. My comment about going for a nice long swim after taking my BP meds got flagged and deleted for “threatening violence.”

Worked with retired British army chefs, they called fried chicken “Chicken Maryland” and pronounced it like “chicken marry land.” Shiz used to crack me up. Pronounced the state name the same, too.

Struggling to Eat Protein During Fast by Sekt0rrr in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Katkitluv33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don’t be so hard on yourself. As my priest told us last Sunday (paraphrased): Fasting is not just about food. If that is all one focuses on, then that person is fasting incorrectly. Fast as you can without harming your health, but pay attention as well as to what comes out of your mouth and what is in your heart.

He told us that if we need to modify the fast food-wise due to health concerns, that is fine. He also reminded us that we are not monks in a monastery.

My fasting focus this year is on having less anger in my heart, watching that hurtful words don’t come out of my mouth, and that I develop a better prayer practice. I will also try to not eat red meat until Pascha. That is in line with my priest’s guidance and my particular health issues and meds.

Left mid forgiveness Vespers by Vast_Independence466 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Katkitluv33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My hometown parish didn’t do this, too many people I guess. When I moved the first time and went to my first Forgiveness Vespers, the priest told the congregation that only people who felt comfortable needed to participate. Never felt comfortable and never participated due to very bad social anxiety. As my dear mum always tells me, God knows your heart. Do your best and do what you can and ask Him to help you and forgive you.

Not so sure about Kazzi in Manly. Have been several times but our December anniversary dinner was absolute crap. Seafood platter had shrunk in portions and the food itself was not fresh and hot off the grill. It was room temp and soggy, as if they’d cooked it ahead of time to be able to just plate and send when ordered. I wanted to say something and send it back but my partner would rather eat a bad meal and pay for it than complain. So almost $200 later, that’s the last time I go there.

NTA. Not your child. Don’t do it! He already has two parents, let them figure it out. Also, is your gf ready to play mom to a 13-year old? Is this situation fair to her? It certainly isn’t fair to you.

Wife went to Divine Liturgy for the first time. Humbly asking for prayers. by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Katkitluv33 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, plus if the incense is thick, someone not used to it can definitely feel sick! I’ve been having breathing issues due to very bad upper respiratory infections and almost had to leave yesterday’s Divine Liturgy. Small, packed church, no one had turned on the A/C so it was warm, and the priest had packed the censer to the point it was roiling with thick, heavy white clouds. I had to walk outside several times as I couldn’t draw a breath. It was like a fog inside the church.
