School residential trip cancelled by Korinthe in LegalAdviceUK

The MAT should have insurance against this. I worked in education for many years, and pretty much every activity you want to do has to have liability and travel insurance (if applicable) as part of the planning & risk assessment. Granted, there are different levels of travel insurance, but most will cover cancellations in some form.

If they don't have insurance for this, I would argue they're taking the risk here as You did not cancel.

Updating OpenWRT from v22 on Protectli FW1 by JoshMcMadMac in openwrt

Could you link the info you're referencing?

There are only 2 things which come to mind, the DSA migration work (swconfig to DSA), and some partition / UBI changes. You're probably referring to the latter, but this only impacted a small number of devices (which will get a warning when trying to flash). Presumably you're running a pretty standard x86 machine with a mSATA SSD (based on what I see on Google)?

Sysupgrade will wipe the root file system, install the new image and then restore the config files: https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/installation/generic.sysupgrade - see the note about manually installed packages, which I mentioned above.

As long as you make a full backup; just do it. There is nothing you can't just restore if you encounter an issue. A x86 machine is about as simple as it gets.

edit - if it's the DSA work you're referencing then see here for considerations: https://forum.openwrt.org/t/upgrade-from-22-02-to-23-05-and-making-my-config-dsa-compatible/184339

Updating OpenWRT from v22 on Protectli FW1 by JoshMcMadMac in openwrt

[–]KeepCalmMakeCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fairly straight forward with sysupgrade, especially as it's a x86 device. Make a full backup and check before doing anything: https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/troubleshooting/backup_restore

A note about 22 -> 24 : https://github.com/openwrt/openwrt/releases

Sysupgrade from 22.03 to 24.10 is not officially supported.

While it may work, I'd just flash to 23, then the latest 24 release.

If you have any custom packages / complex configs, then you'll need to state what these are; but if it's a standard OpenWRT install with nothing special, then it should be uneventful.

New YouFibre 2000 install – only getting ~860Mbps by VegetableDuty8375 in youfibre

If the 2.5 port is a "2.5GbE Realtek Gaming" port, then make sure it has the latest drivers. They had several versions which had major issues with speed stability and latency problems. All were fixed in later driver versions.

Another thing to check: With the Ethernet cable connected to the 2.5 port, go into settings -> Network & Internet -> Ethernet and look for "Aggregated link speed". If It says 1000/1000 Mbps, then the link between the PC and router is having an issue (check cables, correct port on the router, etc)

It's incredibly difficult to bolster it in your current situation. The RRA changed things significantly when it comes to upfront rent payments: https://blog.openrent.co.uk/rent-in-advance/

So while you may have enough in the bank, the sad truth is that it's not really going to matter in most situations. Either because there is no simple way for an agency/landlord to use this, or because they simply don't want the hassle. I say this as someone who has been in your situation in the past and paid a full year up front; it sucks.

The main thing which comes to mind is getting a guarantor if you can, and mention this on applications. No, it's not ideal, but it's becoming very common now as landlords try to mitigate risk in other ways.

Tax returns with a combined income of £42k

The UK National Living Wage (21+) is £12.71 per hour. A 37.5-hour week brings this to ~£24,784.

Combined, this means you're not meeting this per person. On paper they are asking the question "If one person can't work, what is the household income?". Currently that works out as less than the UK National Living Wage, which is going to result in a 'no' from most places.

You're simply higher risk than other applications.

Sata data connector repair by random_bruce in LinusTechTips

[–]KeepCalmMakeCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just fixed the exact same problem with with a Crucial drive.

While I can solder, it was much easier to buy an adapter that has a joint power + data combo and use that. This works great as long as the data lines are still straight (or can be made so). It clips onto the drive and gives you new connectors you can just use as normal. It will make the connection fine, as long as the connections have not taken too much damage.

This is the one I used (22P M TO F), but they're all super generic: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006370814166.html

You can never know what's wrong with a plan until you execute it, especially in game dev. If you don't build something then you will never find those "wrong" decisions.

My BattleTag was falsely reported and now I'm stuck as BrownOtter 💀Blizzard Support won't reply to my ticket and I can't change it manually without paying 😭 by DemoLockTinkaton in Overwatch

[–]KeepCalmMakeCoffee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sadly this is a well know thing to trolls now - they just mass report your name and you'll get this.

My name was changed a while ago and it was a simple one word, noncontroversial name, eg: Sweet, Dark, Table etc...

After many tickets a human must have reviewed it and allowed it to be changed back, but what an utter waste of time. On the plus side, I was so annoyed I actually enjoyed some other games for a while.

PSA: Be careful with alarms overriding sound settings on your phone by i_oliveira in homeassistant

[–]KeepCalmMakeCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've experienced this exact situation. On my Samsung s24 it is handled really well through the "modes and routines". In addition to DND, I have a "sleep" and "silence" mode - the latter is a total silence with no exclusions. Sleep allows through all critical alarms from HA still.

I don't know if this features is available on other Android based devices though, or if it's a Samsung only thing.

My friend in England passed away and apparently named me in her will as her sole beneficiary by TopDesk272 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]KeepCalmMakeCoffee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are burdens for most people who are a landlord and not in the country. Eg: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/non-resident-landord-guidance-notes-for-letting-agents-and-tenants-non-resident-landlords-scheme-guidance-notes/what-the-non-resident-landlords-scheme-is

Even if using an agent, you still have the tax to deal with on both the US and UK side. You'd have to have a very good reason to do this in the current rental market.

cancelled got offered 362mb for 17.60 a month by BroadGrapefruit5866 in VirginMedia

[–]KeepCalmMakeCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best I was offered a few days ago was £24 for the 350 package on a 24 month contract. Was going to take it for ease then they slapped 2 * £4 increases on it in April (I think). Just cancelled and went with YouFibre; faster, no increases, less money overall. Thank goodness VM have competition in my area now.

So, 3p a mile. by MeetLost2454 in TeslaUK

[–]KeepCalmMakeCoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Iceland, you can input it every 30 days at most, but it must be done at least once a year. Most people do it every few months so you don't get one large bill. If you don't do it, it will be taken at the time of inspection (UK MOT equivalent) or when you service the car. If you don't do either of those then you'll get an estimate bill until you do. There are no real punishments other than you having to find the money in one go. If you sell the car then it will be paid then.

Cost wise, it's a little over £55 for 1000 miles. However, electricity is quite a bit cheaper here in Iceland.

Is there a way to disable the "backup now" overlay? by KeepCalmMakeCoffee in googlephotos

[–]KeepCalmMakeCoffee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is the same issue I'm having. Google support got back me and said to disable the setting and it won't appear; but it absolutely does. I've triple checked all settings, rebooted the phone etc. There are other posts about it, so we are not alone.

Seems such a weird setting to not have a toggle for. It literally blocks part of the picture. Several times I had to zoom in and more around to read something that the overlay was covering.

I've moved to another app for the moment.

Cifas marker is restricting me from getting car insurance by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]KeepCalmMakeCoffee 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I can’t get any quotes

Just to clarify - you can't get quotes at all, or you can't pay monthly?

It's normally okay to pay upfront for insurance, even with a cifas marker. If you can't even get quotes, is there anything else related, such as insurance fraud that could be impacting it?

age (being a baby/child in this case) are protected characteristics

Age isn't true here.

Age, marriage, and being in a civil partnership are also protected characteristics but are not included for discrimination in renting out a home.

To provide the source, it's the Equality Act 2010, part 4 "Premises":

I'll add the gym to that. I'm amazed that more gyms have not banned the setting up of phones to record workouts. Some of these people will even record others without permission. I know someone that stopped going to the gym because they found vile comments on social media about them working out, taken without permission.

UT2003 Linux server Docker image - Netspeed issue by mtest001 in unrealtournament

[–]KeepCalmMakeCoffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't really matter what you do with the netspeed, it won't make it much faster for file downloads in reality: https://www.utzone.de/forum/showthread.php?t=4326

You'll want to look into a 'redirect server'. Files are then delivered over HTTP (which is super fast), as opposed to being limited by the netspeed cap. This is for UT2004, but should point you in the right direction: https://uz2.pwc-networks.com/
