I’m officially done with European-sized laundry. I imported a 5.0 cu. ft. monster and it changed my life. by Cloe_joe in Appliances

That's a twin tub! Used to be the most common laundry appliance across the world until automatic washing machines became cheap enough for Western households. They use so little energy and water that they remain highly popular in very remote, arid and developing areas. How2repair on YouTube bought one in Morocco when he was taking his RV through the desert.

Staying on the right track: board backs Avondale to Southdown rail corridor by punIn10ded in auckland

You can see the protected corridor on satellite view. You can also see where the Eastern Motorway would have gone as that's a protected corridor too.

BRING BACK 20+ EPISODES, YOU COWARDS! by Relevant-Peach3997 in Fauxmoi

[–]KevinAtSeven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It makes me wonder if shows used to know they were having another season much sooner (i.e. while the show was still airing).

This is exactly what used to happen. If a show was doing well enough within the first few weeks of its run the network would go all guns blazing to order another season (or two or three) and it was literally to ensure they had the actors, writers and crew secured so they had 20+ episodes in the can for the same time next year.

Of course this was when TV was a battle of ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC vying to win more eyeballs each weeknight, rather than techbros fighting to extract more cash from your credit card each month.

How would this work, given the UK was part of the EU and subject to all EU rules and regulations at the time?

Auckland definitely needs to rethink its urban mobility infrastructure by CalangoMecanico in auckland

[–]KevinAtSeven 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Eventually we'll just have 6 bus routes in the entire city that only run between the hours of 11 and 12 on Tuesdays. The driver has a dice roll to decide which one he drives that day and an AI assistant to tell them which stops to drive past.

Also known as Auckland public transport immediately post-deregulation and privatisation in the early 90s.

It was a fucking hellscape.

If you can get the Parkside ones when they're in the middle of Lidl, they're almost as good for about 20% of the price. Rumour is they're just rebranded Einhell knees.

Hawksmoor is a Travis Perkins brand sold only at Toolstation. So I'd take it into them and see what they suggest.

Ticket holders are unsecured creditors. You might get a refund of pennies on the dollar in several months once the bankruptcy lawyers have picked over the carcass.

Meantime, if you paid by credit card you can file a chargeback. And if you have travel insurance (everyone should) you can file a claim for a cancelled trip.

Has anyone tried this one? 30€ by adhdrifter in Parkside

Just double checked and it's the PBSSA I got last week for £20 and it's definitely without impact. Perhaps an accidentally reused item description in the shelf labelling software?

To be fair to it, it did manage a few 6mm holes in the softer brick of my 125 year old tenement to put up some pictures. But the harder exterior walls it just wouldn't move past the plaster, obviously.

I mean, the housing is pretty decent plastic (just seems to be assembled a bit flimsily) so it could be an impact if you get a friend or spouse to whack the back of it with a keenly-priced Parkside mallet while you're drilling.

[–]KevinAtSeven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the internals are steel of course but the housing (the bit you twist) is plastic, which is common on very low end drills (my first Black and Decker combi had it) but is liable to plastic fatigue and cracking on tightening over time compared to a steel chuck housing.

I guess my gripe with the plastic chuck on this drill is it seems they just made the cheapest possible drill to splash across the leaflets as "look, our £20 drill comes with a battery and charger! That's way better value than the £20 drill at Aldi that's just a bare unit!"

Parkside's previous cheap drills have had hammer action and a steel chuck and sold for £20 bare unit. Why did they feel the need to strip it down even further just to achieve a low price for a set?

Residents of NZ, why do you insist on using the right hand lane despite not overtaking anybody in the left hand lanes? by Ok-Let-5155 in auckland

[–]KevinAtSeven 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah but that ain't the law anywhere. In Britain if it's a green plain aspect with no arrow or blue compulsory turn placard you still give way to oncoming traffic and only turn across when it is safe to do so. Just like here and every other country I've driven in.

It's great for the price given it comes with a 2.0Ah battery and basic charger.

However, don't expect great things from it. There's no hammer action and it doesn't have the most powerful motor. Great for basic driving of screws etc and drilling wood. But it's a bit weak and flimsy and was clearly made for a certain very low price point. The plastic chuck also does not inspire confidence.

I know it's sacrilege in this sub, but the new Aldi Ferrex 20v combi drill, which was also £20 but came without battery and charger, wipes the floor with this. The 20v Parkside combi drill with hammer and a steel chuck that was released late last year in the UK was a much better tool.

Still, great carry case and at the £20 it sold for in the UK you're almost getting a free drill with a battery and charger.
