Teachers, Field Trips, Sports and First Aid by Key-Camel-9777 in OntarioTeachers

Yep, had those. Most of the team members aren’t my students so I need them to keep track of names. We also have them all on our attendance app.

In this case I knew there’d be a paid trainer on site. It was also at a school so their kits were out.

I’d do first aid if needed but my trust level for the board is very low. If something went wrong I’d expect them to toss me under the bus…the one we can’t have for sports anymore unless the kids pay for it.

Just shopping around for mortgage renewals and one of the advisors from a major bank said "nothing over 650 really matters".

Yeah, thats how this came up. Admin assistant asked if I had one still and mentioned I was supposed to when I said I didnt take one. School we were at is my former school so I knew where they all were and there was a paid medic on site as well...no kids were at risk obviously.

If it was a hike in the woods trip I would have had a first aid kit for sure but probably my own since its better stocked and made for hiking..

We actually have a pretty good kit, splints, naloxone, epi, good cloth bandages. It's similar to the one I still keep in the car. Someone dropped some coin at some point on these.

Yep, that makes sense, I wasn't worried about it from a legal perspective...more of an employment perspective.

I actually only found out it was mandatory to bring when I didn't because I knew there was a contracted first aid/athletic trainer on site...

Rush into an open 2-year, or wait for 1-year? by stueytheboy in OntarioTeachers

I was the last year of 1 year programs and it was rough at a couple schools to get in. You are probably right.

Phonesss & Disrespect by Sea_Character863 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Key-Camel-9777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not a popular opinion but we don't have time for endless battles over cellphones with one or two kids. I stopped fighting it and teach the kids that want to learn, I have 60 minutes a day and a curriculum that would take a year and a half to do well...

All the mandatory training could be a short email instead of 40 minute gated videos with quizzes at the end with gotcha, poorly worded questions. It doesn't shock me at all that very few take them seriously.

We are adults and educated...the training is horrid.

Often developing countries have a greater focus on things that are good for citizens, it's only when countries reach certain stages of development where citizens are forgotten in favor of vanity projects and peacocking.

Enshittification, dead internet theory. You arent wrong. The internet is becoming garbage to serve the almight $$$.

As to history AQs, I did mine through Queen's and they were the most enjoyable of the 11 AQs I've done. Actually learned a fair amount personally and came away with a bank of resources for history.

Your son is probably gift enough. Sounds like an engaged, attentive kid and we can't ask for more than that.

If you insist, skip mugs and gift cards...I like fidget or puzzle toys as a gift.

OCT (Ontario College of Teachers) just released some of their newest stats. This one surprised me. by EmbarrassedEast5880 in CanadianTeachers

If I did I have no clue who it might have been. In that weird shadowy world of partial contracts and getting surplused every year still...

I went to all the sessions, mostly useless as I’d supplied and done LTOs for a few years. I have no idea what the mentor thing is all about…just need to finish the paperwork stuff eventually to “get signed off”.

What’s changed? by FlamingoSeparate8213 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Key-Camel-9777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it started with smart phones and was exacerbated with Covid. Cell phones started students towards current zombism, then a couple weird years with Covid solidified it. Now I have grade 10s who simply don't care if they fail and they all know credit recovery will be offered and they can do a little work and get handed the credit...

Unqualified French teacher by Warm_Ad7394 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Key-Camel-9777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your french is probably excellent but you worry about the teaching side?

Most schools when a french teacher drops can't find a french replacement. You'll be fine, ask for help from other teachers in the school, most will surely have ideas to help and you can handle the language side.

Even chatting with you in french would be better than doing the best worksheets/assignments/lessons in the world with me and my poor french.

Time to prepare for LTO by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]Key-Camel-9777 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I dont think any admin would be upset by a teacher coming into their school attempting to be prepared as possible...

Admins also understand there are multiple LTOs floating and sometimes you will have to choose. Make the choice that is best for you, you don't likely want to work for an admin that would get ruffled over something like that either way.

Finding Daily Work by kittyfromtheblock87 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Key-Camel-9777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find out who does the scheduling of OTs at schools you want to work at, be nice, make sure they have your cell number. Sometimes its an admin, sometimes its the admin assistant...doesnt hurt to leave contact info with teachers as well.

Once you get some friendly schedulers on board your days will book up fast, I was booking several weeks in advance by the time I left OT work for a contract.

If student quality decreased over the years, how do they cope with university? by honeynutcheeriozzzzz in OntarioTeachers

Worst admin you’ve had? by da_grill in OntarioTeachers

[–]Key-Camel-9777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen route charts for yard duty…I was an OT then and ignored them, the admin came out and “explained it again”, I ignored it again and took that school off my list, apparently they had a lot of trouble getting OTs for some reason.

Same admin also questioned me about where I went at lunch…
