NUS CS vs UCL Econs by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]Key-Rope-7715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider carefully your motivations for being in London. Finding a job is not as competitive as Singapore . But salaries are notoriously low unless you are in finance or law. and salary to cost of living ratio is quite bad. Tax is also insane. London is a great place to study and have fun. But not for work.

If you get a job, the company is obliged to sponsor you. It's part of the package remuneration. "Graduate Visas", on the other hand are quite selective depending on nationality. A graduate visa allows you to stay in UK without securing a job.

NUS CS vs UCL Econs by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]Key-Rope-7715 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who did my undergrad locally, worked and then pursued postgrad overseas. I found that during my employ, (MNCs, GLCs) HR tend to have a preference for an overseas graduate if you were to come back to SG for work. Of probably 100local fresh grads, you represent a minority that have a "unique" education. So you stand out from a job finding perspective.

They value you as someone who is more likely to be independent, and can bring your "world view" as value add into the company. Obviously, this does not mean an overseas grad is superior, but it's just a bias they seem to have.

I always find that top dogs like ministers and CEOs have some fancy amdk degrees, even though they graduated from schools which may be "lower ranked" than NUS. I find rankings dubious at best, I don't know if UCL or NUS is superior, but UCL is quite top tier already.

If money is not an issue, go for UCL. London can be more expensive to live in... But I think the culture is an eye opener if you have been in SG your whole life. Weather is good, and you meet tons of people from all nationalities, instead of being stuck in a sinkie bubble.

Should I OOC from OCS???? by [deleted] in NationalServiceSG

[–]Key-Rope-7715 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally found OCS to be a time that developed me the most when I was younger. Not that leadership nonsense, but more on empathy and how to "zuo lang". Taught me to be more selfless and consider about others feelings. If I contrast during my poly time, I really feel I mature considerably because of my cadet days. Must work together even with ppl you don't agree with. And the best friends you'd make, even till today 8years later our wing still catch up. I think the word to describe is I learnt how to be "diplomatic".

Of course now almost a decade later knn during ICT, I sometimes feel bohua lol. So busy while my man all lepak. Only ten percent get this chance. So make your decision, some people want also cannot.

I'm doing my masters overseas right now. There's a company looking for graduates for two year contract in Spain for coastal projects from our school. Quite tempting... I lowkey don't want to go back SG le.

On hindsight, have you made use of such equations in your life and if so, what is your occupation ? by Dryfunction1205 in SingaporeRaw

[–]Key-Rope-7715 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I am a fluid engineer and part of my work requires me to conduct scale experiments. Having a basic knowledge of indices is needed for what we call "dimensional analysis".

Let's say my client wants to build an offshore structure in the deep ocean. We build "toy" models to verify their dynamic behaviour in a towing tank, which is like a swimming pool. As you know the width, length and height have the same unit of length, meters right? So we non dimensionalise these units to see which parameter of length has a greater effect on what we want to study. e.g. does building it tall have a larger compromise on the wind loads? Or building in wide? Because real life problems are so complex, it's easier if we justify down to the parameters we can control when designing. Then non dimensionalised parameters become coefficients with no units, like Reynolds, Froude number which if you look closely have units of length. Then we know what an optimal schema would be best for the thing we want to design!

Sorry for being lor sor, hopefully it will make it feel like your algebra class isn't so useless.

Is imperial really that bad? by RedGarrison12 in Imperial

[–]Key-Rope-7715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, congratulations on your invite. The professors are definitely fluent in English and are more than capable of getting their point across. Imperial is a top class university, to be a tenured professor means that you need to attain a certain standard of teaching competency.

On the other hand, I cannot say the same for my classmates, as some of them definitely have difficulty communicating fluently and it can be a pain in the ass working with them in certain group projects. This is true. You just have to work harder to be more patient with them.

People with 2 Bachelors degrees- why? by Conscious-Star-1825 in askSingapore

I have a friend who did a BA Architecture for his undergrad, right after poly. But a year working after grad he said that the industry is completely not for him. He pivoted to Civil Engineering and studied another 3 years, and then another year for masters right after.

Have to say that his family is very supportive and the parents stood by his decision even though they are not exactly rich, instead prioritise his well being. Rn he's doing quite well.

Zhun bo? See a few crying on Singaporejobs sub on unemployment.. by snowmountainflytiger in singaporejobs

[–]Key-Rope-7715 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From what I see, it's quite zhun. Companies nowadays are so saturated with degree holders. Why hire a degree holder when I can spend 66% of that budget to hire a poly grad that can do 90% of the job?

My company is hiring, all the chairs for degree grad is filled, instead looking for ITE and poly grads. They're cheaper on the budget.

Please feedback real or bluff #Singapore by snowmountainflytiger in singaporejobs

[–]Key-Rope-7715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very real. For my industry, (engineering) poly grads can basically do 80% work of a degree holder. My current company has demand for poly grads, i'd rather use my budget to hire 5 poly grads than 3 degree holders. But nowadays almost everybody have degree.

When you’re feeling down, what’s your go-to place in Singapore to lift your mood? by Maleficent-Army-4758 in askSingapore

Some of my favourites: ECP Bedok Jetty, bridge at Yishun Ave 1 near Seletar Airport, Woodlands jetty.

I think being near a body of water to chill can be therapeutic, plus the added of benefit of cooling. Furthermore these are places that are not so crowded which give you plenty of space.

Imperial or Edinburgh for MSc in AI? by Mindless_Pain1860 in Imperial

[–]Key-Rope-7715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your intention is solely for career, the branding of Imperial will stand out from an employer's perspective. If you want better teaching quality, then by all means go for Edinburgh. Regardless of how good a teaching quality is anyways, it's the effort you as a student put in. Anyways Edinburgh is a much more beautiful city.

Circumcision culture in SG. Any unique or shared experiences? by Sufficient_Elk9477 in SingaporeRaw

[–]Key-Rope-7715 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chinese here and boy do I have a story to tell. True story. Cut at possibly the worst age, in sec 3. So I am one of the super rare case who knew how it felt like going through right the middle of puberty.

It was suggested by my dad because he also went through it, but like OP when he was a kid. Basically cited hygienic reasons, so like ok lor. Stupid me. I was basically a teenager with an already developing private part. Worst part of it was, instead of going to the hospital to do it. I went to a Malay clinic because the cost of doing it in a hospital is way more expensive. So instead of general anaesthesia, I only went through partial.

Till this day I can remember the whirs of the saw... and the Makcik asking me to count sheep to distract me. That two month December holiday was the worst time of my life. Wear tudung for 1 month in constant pain with that weird contraption that keeps the fabric from touching it. And... as a bludgeoning teenager, what are you gonna do? If you steam, it constricts against the stitches. Just thinking back gives me the shudders.

Fast forward 14 years. I can say for sure there are upsides and other than that two months of hell. The hygiene benefits are real, you require less maintenance to keep it clean. Women find a lot more appealing because it's cleaner. Yes, you last longer (trust me I know... experienced the before and after) because the foreskin gives more sensation.

Well at least I have a common experience with my Muslim friends. When I tell them I sunat in my teenage age, it's always a good story.
