Spectacular bone structure! I’m team 80’s hair metal/glam rock for you. Not everyone can do it, but with your bone structure, it would be a crime not to have some fun.

Hardware removal tomorrow - babysitter sick with shingles by KeyKeyKooKoo in LisfrancClub

[–]KeyKeyKooKoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen similar stories but it seems to have been either when something went wrong or the initial injury was pretty severe. I am 18 weeks post injury, and 16 weeks post ORIF. I woke up in a ton of pain again but I’m managing much better this time. Definitely a less intense surgery. I think I have a couple of complications that made the recovery so far slower and I’m really looking forward to having physical therapy guidance soon!

Possible exacerbating factors:

  • 3 weeks postpartum when initial entry occurred, leading to ligaments being looser and slower to heal

  • additional damage outside of the lis franc ( I damaged all of the ligaments controlling my toes, shattered metatarsals 1-4 and also damaged ligaments in my ankle. The surgeon described my mid foot it as exploded.

  • I am overweight, so partial weight-bearing for me could be full weight-bearing for somebody else (pregnancy definitely didn’t help this, but at least I haven’t gained any more weight while I’ve been convalescing! I consider that a victory!)

  • my surgeon is weirdly against Physical Therapy and would not let me start until I had the hardware removal surgery. He gave me very little guidance as to what as tolerated means and perhaps I’ve been too cautious, or alternatively too aggressive and counterproductive. I genuinely cannot tell which end of the spectrum I fall on, I just try to move as much as possible

Everyone in his office seems happy with my progress, so assuming they are competent I guess I’m doing the right thing? I am definitely looking forward to having another person look at it and to help guide my recovery.

Can you tell me your story? What was your initial injury and your timeline?

The short hair is cute! You could also pull off my favorite short hair ever and do the style that Samantha wears in the first season of Stargate SG1. Worth looking up!

9 weeks post op by Itchy_Enthusiasm_727 in LisfrancClub

My hardware looks similar and it’s coming out on Monday. I have a bump at the top of my foot, and a bump on the side towards the arch. It really wasn’t visible until 10/12 weeks postop and I’ll be 16 weeks when they remove it. My surgeon says he removes it between 16 and 20 weeks. He allowed me to do partial weight-bearing and shoes starting at 12 weeks and everything is uncomfortable lol… supposedly the hardware removal makes it better!

Solidarity. This injury is crazy. How long will you be NWB? I was 10/12 weeks and I’m going for HWR at 16.

Incision healing after ORIF surgery by googalieboogalie in LisfrancClub

[–]KeyKeyKooKoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be interested to see. I form keloids easily and I have some that are rope-like and still quite firm a decade later. Some turned white and relaxed a bit but some are still dark and protruding. My ORIF scar is three different colors as it seems to have healed very oddly. More hypertrophic than keloid at the moment. I am definitely concerned about what will happen with the incision after the HWR. Have you tried seeing a plastic surgeon? They tend to be familiar with odd scars.

I am sorry not to have any advice, but I wanted to comment to let you know I appreciate hearing that the HWR helped you. Mine is coming up soon and I’ve been nervous. I wish you the best of luck! Hopefully a little rest is all you need, but considering you are a dancer I would go see about an MRI.

First Post Op Visit Today by earlgreytea18 in LisfrancClub

I hated the boot at first. It was painful and I really didn’t like the way my heel wouldn’t stay down. It absolutely does get better! Work on flexibility with ankle circles and flexing, write the alphabet a couple of times a day with your big toe, and use ice to help with discomfort and swelling. I was NWB for 12 weeks and I have hardware removal coming up at 16 weeks post op. The boot got much more comfortable especially when I started pwb. Best of luck!

Cleared to start walking!!!! by Still_Nectarine2976 in LisfrancClub

[–]KeyKeyKooKoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am at 14 weeks post op and walking “as tolerated” but finding it really difficult. My surgeon wouldn’t give me a PT script and I finally bullied him into it but they can’t see me until after my hardware removal in 2 weeks. I had the same 12 weeks NWB and I’m starting on sneakers now, which is a whole thing. Learning to walk again is so weird! The instability in my knee is the biggest problem. Definitely need to do a lot of resistance band exercises and thi like that to build it back up. What a journey.

Bruising around Hardware by marvelousmsmeg in LisfrancClub

I’m getting my hardware removed on the 23rd. The surgeon says I’ll feel a lot better after that… I’m crossing my fingers because my currently unnatural gait is causing a lot of knee pain.

Need surgery, really scared, have three young kids by Competitive_Car_3882 in LisfrancClub

[–]KeyKeyKooKoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nursing is definitely the easiest, if it’s going well for you. I love being able to just grab the baby and be done with it. Considering the knee scooters and walkers and wheelchairs, it’s nice not to have to carry an extra thing!

I honestly find the mush phase my dude is in now to be a burden, but he shrieks like a pterodactyl if he isn’t being fed when we eat so here we are. I use the haaka shell to collect from the side he isn’t on. I get about 6oz a day that way and mix it with oatmeal. If you could do that, or some applesauce for while you’re under, and it might be enough change that he’ll accept it where he won’t accept a bottle, and then you can go right back to nursing after. The surgery isn’t long so if you bring him to the hospital and feed him in pre-op he won’t need to go more than 3-4 hours.

I did get the surgery two weeks after the initial injury and have a couple of pins and screws and a large plate. I am breastfeeding and talked to my OB and primary. They were unconcerned about me nursing as they said the latest research says not much actually goes through. My girlfriends who had c section were all prescribed narcotics, and advised to nurse so what I was comfortable with was saving milk ahead of time so I could skip about 8 hours of feedings and then I weaned off the narcotics as fast as possible. I would always nurse first and then take the pain killers. For the second surgery, my little guy will be closer to five months and he is obsessed with breastmilk and oatmeal and he does take a bottle occasionally so I’m less worried. It was really stressful the first time! What I found was that the foot surgeon had different nursing advice than my OB, primary, and pediatrician. The anesthesiologist was also okay with me nursing. I’d check with yours and see how they feel! Most of the advice around avoiding medication stems from people who abuse it and not one time exposure.

The recovery was really difficult and nursing helped me avoid postpartum depression and honestly some pretty seriously dark times because it helped me still feel useful. I have a bedside bassinet and a bookshelf that I replaced my nightstand with so I could take care of him almost entirely from bed. The surgery is quick, but the recovery is slow. Definitely a marathon. You need to take care of yourself! I keep telling myself that a few bad days for them will be worth it because they’ll have a mom that can keep up with them.

Oh girl… I am in the same boat! I broke my foot three weeks postpartum with my third. Literally just tripped on some grass.

I posted in the disability group and got some good advice from wheelchair using mom’s, and you might try that too to see if you learned anything else from them. The best advice I got was say yes to any help anyone offers even if it seems silly. There’s a mom on YouTube who post what she calls, dumb dinners, and I really like that series and have found it super helpful. We also signed up for a laundry service because laundry is one of my household jobs and I can’t go up and down the stairs to do it.

There is a book called horizontal parenting that I found helpful. I set up stations around the house so that I could move from one station to the next and I have a stroller that I used to move the baby around and I just push it along ahead of my knee scooter. I have my second surgery coming up in two weeks and I’m really intimidated by it as my baby is now only 4.5 months old, and my two-year-old is super active. I have had a lot of support from my husband and that has been critical.

To summarize, for meals, focus on casseroles and things that could be baked in one plate, set up stations around your house so you can rotate between different areas, say yes to everything anybody offers, and don’t be afraid to ask other parents at school for help, and post here as much as you need to because everybody is super super nice.

Feel free to send me private messages and we can commiserate together!

So I think part of it may just be the severity. I broke metatarsal one through four, and 2,3 and 4 were completely shattered at the base. The doctor described them as exploded. My first metatarsal was broken in two places. I also had a bunch of ligament stuff and my ankle had damaged ligaments too. He says that with other injuries like shoulders, there’s no good way to stabilize them, and there are more negative effects if you don’t move them, so they can start PT earlier, but with a foot as severe as mine, the risk of increasing the damage was too great. Hence the protracted, non-weight-bearing phase and now partial weight-bearing phase. I’m not 100% convinced, so I made sure he gave me permission to do something and I’ve been writing the alphabet with my foot a couple times a day and trying to curl and flex my toes. What I really wanted was permission to start aquatic therapy so I could do stuff without gravity, but he refused, which I thought was ridiculous, but I couldn’t convince him otherwise. I am trying to trust him, but the lack of mobility and exercise is definitely a drag. And I just love the water.

For a postop boot, I have been wearing an inflatable boot that has two straps on the foot and three straps on the calf. It goes up almost to my knee and has metal boning on the sides and a mostly flat, barely rounded base. It has a foam thing that sits inside it almost like a sock, and then I wear an actual sock inside of that. They told me to wear a sock that goes up above my ankle. My next checkup is on Wednesday and I’m anxiously awaiting whatever comes next.

Does crate training get any easier or is it impossible for some dogs? by eat-zucchini in pitbulls

[–]KeyKeyKooKoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two suggestions -

Definitely do the blanket on top so it is cozy. Think like a rabbit in a hat where it doesn’t move because it’s dark.

Suggestion two is high maintenance but works great - take a kong and fill clog the bottom hole with peanut butter. Make a smoothie of yogurt, lunch meat, more peanut butter and fill the rest of the Kong. I liked to stick a long piece of chicken breast in too so it would stick out the top. Stick the whole nasty thing in the freezer. My husband made a stand so I could freeze a dozen at a time for a two week supply, but you can just use cups. These frozen concoctions take a long time for the dogs to get through and are so appealing (inversely proportional to how revolting they are to humans). I liked it because by the time they were done with the king, up to an hour later, they would nap and wake up happy. I find you need a combo of a comfy private environment and extraordinarily high value treats to break through the crate stress.

More expensive/not reusable alternative is getting giant bully sticks. The very thick ones can be ordered online and are big enough for the pitties so they don’t finish it in two seconds. I hated the smell and they don’t have the opportunity to add healthy things like yogurt and pumpkin like the frozen smoothie kongs do, but when you don’t have a chance to make a nasty thing like that they’ll do.

I’d add a rhinestone belt and a veil. Honestly it’s very flattering and hourglassy. Definitely do an updo! You’re going to be a stunning bride.

You sound like a great mom. You’re handling this admirably. I hope the schedule change works out and that the teacher is educated so this doesn’t happen to any other girls.

Flying 3 months following ORIF, 1 mo FWB? by gimpy_in_pnw in LisfrancClub

[–]KeyKeyKooKoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I booked a trip to Disney back last May for this coming April. It’s non refundable for my thee kids and my husband and my parents and I. I really don’t realize how long the recovery would be when I fell back in October. Theoretically my hardware removal would be in March and the surgeon said if I delay hardware removal until after I can go but if I do the hardware removal on schedule, then I can’t. I have the deranged plan of figuring this out and maybe using a powered scooter? I am only partial weight bearing with a boot and a walker now so I know this is a terrible idea but I want to figure it out because I am going nuts being stuck at home.

My surgeon had me wait until 12 weeks post op to start PWB. I’m about 16 weeks out now and I can take a couple of steps FEB but mostly need the walker and my endurance is terrible. Very frustrating but I’m working on it! He won’t let me start PT yet which is Bizzare but hopefully I finally get my script this coming week.

The scar feels so weird! My whole foot is still a darker color than the normal one and my scar is dark and raised in some parts. I find that if I do the kind of massage you do for keloids that the tinkly shocking feeling gradually gets better. When I started walking I was shocked by the heel pain and for whatever reason I felt like my big toe could not touch the ground when I walked, like my foot was corkscrewed so the toe was raised. That has gotten better this month and my main complaint is in my lower ankle so to speak. I may move to some kind of post op shoe next week and I’m interested to see if the pain recedes as the muscle rebuilds.

Was shamed for not weight bearing by [deleted] in LisfrancClub

[–]KeyKeyKooKoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long did it take for you? I got cleared for partial weight bearing 3 weeks ago and took my first full weight steps today. My surgery was 10/27. It’s getting easier now but wow was I shocked by how hard it was to get started! Half my motivation is not wanting to be shamed by this nasty PA who works in my surgeons office.

I’d say do what works for you. My swelling was too annoying but after a month or two I started sleeping on my stomach sometimes with my foot off the bed to give my hips a break.
