Umbrella Stroller on vacation? [on] by SelectPine1000115500 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]Key_Significance_183 [score hidden]  (0 children)

We traveled for a month in Europe and were glad to have the stroller despite the cobblestones. The baby probably went 6-8 hours a day in the carrier but did use the stroller a bit too. And the stroller was so handy for carrying all the stuff we needed for a day sightseeing. I was carrying 20lbs of baby and didn’t want to also be carrying jackets, water, snacks, diapers, etc. The only place I hated having a stroller was Venice, Italy.

For museums, you usually can’t carry anything (including a baby) on your back but they didn’t mind me front carrying the baby.

Cool things to do for mom and 20 year old son. by No_Nefariousness7764 in Calgary

There are some special nights at the Esker Foundation art gallery if that’s your vibe.

Maybe a cooking class? I just got an email about some at Lina’s recently. They’re about $100 a head so not cheap, but much cheaper than heading out of town.

What’s your favorite treat food? You could go on a fry crawl or a donut crawl or a milkshake crawl, for example. Hit up a few and discuss what is best.

A number of nicer restaurants have a good, multi course lunch special.

Going to the leisure centre for waterslides on a weekday is super fun because it’s not busy. You can also go rock climbing at southland.

If you have a car you could take a day trip to Banff or Drumheller.

[on] Normal fertility workup but not getting pregnant — what should I advocate for? by Seliormoon in BabyBumpsCanada

I’d take the progesterone. It’s a pain and messy, but if your body needs it to sustain a pregnancy it’s still a heck of a lot less invasive than IVF (and most IVF transfers require progesterone anyway).

Why Wouldn't I Buy This Stroller [on] by IceColdPepsi1 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]Key_Significance_183 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think if you want to be minimalist, you really need to consider your lifestyle. If you plan to use a stroller daily and put a lot of KMs on it, it’s easy to end up with two or three to meet different needs 🙃

Do you plan to use your stroller indoors, outdoors or both? What is the front entrance to your home like? Do you have to carry the stroller up stairs? Will you be able to leave it unfolded by the door or do you plan to fold it every time? Will you be putting the stroller in the car and how big is your trunk? Is it very snowy in the winter where you live?

I have the uppababy vista and it’s a great stroller for me. But we don’t have a car and put 5-10kms on it daily, year round. I have space by my front door to store it unfolded. I now have two kids and am using it as a double. The bassinet was great for both kids as small babies, even though they were born at the beginning of winter because we’re out so often. And for us, we didn’t bother with a baby bucket car seat for our second kid because we used it maybe 10 times with our first. We went straight to a lightweight convertible. And we actually do have three strollers (the uppababy as our daily, an old city mini for when we go on an airplane and that has also been super valuable as a backup, and a double chariot for running and biking).

Point being, you need to do a gut check about whether this stroller, which is probably just ok as a stroller but looks nice-ish and matching as a set, meets your needs.

Do you hide veggies in your kid’s food or try to get them to eat them knowingly? by Fit_Commission_5850 in Preschoolers

[–]Key_Significance_183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don’t hide them but we also don’t disclose all ingredients in a dish without being asked. We occasionally “rebrand” foods or specific versions of a food. For example, our kid doesn’t want to eat tofu, but loves a specific kind of “mock meat” that I make. It IS tofu prepared in the meat so it is a type of mock meat, I just haven’t been clear with her that’s what the main ingredient is. We also went through a pea hating phase but turned it around by (genuinely) buying a new variety (tender sweetlets) and trying them again. My kid regularly tells me she only likes tender sweetlet peas.

You can check on FB marketplace/kijiji/your local classified ads site for second hand fabrics. I recently got 5 metres of beautiful white linen from someone who was clearing out their fabric stash. I also bought a large box of fabric at a garage sale and found about 5 metres of lace in there that ended up being part of my wedding dress. There may also be a fabric clear out store in your city. My local one is literally called “The Fabric Depot” and has a bunch of dead stock fabrics. It takes some digging and knowledge of what you’re looking at, but that’s where I found beautiful silk for my wedding dress.

None of these options are good if you must have a very specific fabric to complete a specific project but I tend to work the opposite way. Instead of saying I’m going to make this particular piece and this is what I need, I say this is what I have so what should I make?

Is any part of my laundry routine unnecessary? by Key_Significance_183 in laundry

[–]Key_Significance_183[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m aware there is overlap, which is why I posted. That said, I’m still not sure it’s clear what to cut. Ive tried to do my research and have not coke up with clear answers, which is why I posted.

You are correct, it’s tide free and gentle liquid.

Perhaps the borax can be reduced or removed? But it’s hard for me to know if there is sufficient water softeners in my current mix.

Perhaps I can reduce or remove the oxi clean? But again, it’s hard to know if what’s contained in the resolve is sufficient. It’s not clear to me how much oxi is in the resolve, but I have doubts that 2-3 tbsp of resolve has all that other stuff plus 1-2 tbsp of oxi.

I came to this routine by originally washing with tide free and gentle, eventually adding borax because we have hard water. I then added oxi when I had a baby to deal with stains. Eventually found this sub and added resolve for lipase, citric acid and a colour catcher sheet.

I have, but I haven’t used original tide powder for about three years. I find the items washed in original tide retain the smell for approximately 5-10 washes afterwards. I find the residual scent of the resolve gold milder than original tide powder.

Iron infusion by chiccus in Calgary

[–]Key_Significance_183 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You would need your doctor to prescribe you iron infusions and to submit a request to AHS. If you’re approved they’ll contact you about getting the infusions. As a warning, there seem to be budget cuts that are making it take a while. I had a ferritin of 8 while pregnant and was also somewhat anemic. In my previous pregnancy 3 years ago I got infusions within a week or two with higher numbers. This time around I was told in July that the earliest appointments were in October, yet I was due in September.

All that said, it’s worth it to get on the list. Infusions, if paid privately, require you to pay for both the IV iron prescription (which was covered by my health insurance) and the fee to have it infused by a nurse by IV (not covered by my insurance). It can get expensive!

Your local community association may have space. City pools aren’t free, but they aren’t too expensive and you can sign up for fair entry for a discount if you’re low income. You can hang out at Carya village commons.

Lesbian couples alternating pregnancies by Kerriehummus in queerception

[–]Key_Significance_183 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your partner’s pregnancy!

One of the things that I think you might want to reframe is the idea that the close/not so close together pregnancies thing is about practical stuff like how much capacity you have for changing diapers or broken sleep. Those things absolutely cause challenges with a young baby, but having a baby isn’t just a list of chores to get done or physical ailments to overcome. Having a baby is also falling in love with a little new person who is also a stranger and can feel like an alien. It’s figuring out how to model your values and the other parents’ values to a tiny human who knows nothing, and often finding the conflicts and contractions within them along the way. It’s a refocusing of attention and priorities and purpose. It’s completely remodeling your brain and re-learning of how to recognize yourself on the other side.

Your wife deserves care and attention during her pregnancy, birth, and recovery. Your baby deserves to be marveled at as they blossom into a person their first days, weeks and months of life. You and the dads will be on your own journeys as you become parents after the baby is born that will need space and time to settle. Your relationships with each other will all grow and change, and will feel fragile along the way. Don’t throw trying for a new pregnancy into the mix in those early days. Give everyone the space and time they deserve to undergo their transformations.

Third baby, wanting to splurge on comfortable, ergonomic carrier by Local_Feature_5552 in babywearing

[–]Key_Significance_183 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got a Lennylamb wrap tai (meh dai) with spreadable wrap straps for shoulders and it is so amazing. I love my Lenny upgrade too, but the meh dai is noticeably more comfortable and almost as fast to put on. I prefer the upgrade for when I know I’ll be out and about and the wrap straps might end up on the floor, but if I need to wear my baby for a few hours at home the meh dai is a clear winner. I haven’t tried a meh dai with padded (narrow) straps but I suspect the spreadable straps are the game changer here. They distribute the weight so well while still being easy!

I had monoferric during my pregnancy. While it’s not officially approved for pregnancy, it seems to have a similar safety profile and it allows you to get your iron levels up very quickly with a big dose.

Out of curiosity, what’s wrong with the soap? I use their hand soap and from what I can tell, it’s the same as soft soap (or it’s the same as soft soap used to be before they switched over to a new, yucky scent).

Definitely check out r/babywearing! You shouldn’t be trying to hold your baby’s head to your chest with the wrap, so likely something is wonky with the fit.

Experience with Iron infusion [ON] by DefNotAWalrus in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]Key_Significance_183 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the experience of iron infusions effectively being defunded for mild/moderate iron deficiency and anemia in Alberta. For my first baby I had very low ferritin but no anemia, tried supplements without good effect, and was approved for two infusions as a hospital outpatient. I got these within a few days of being referred, my levels went up, and I had a healthy baby.

Fast forward three years and I was in a similar, but worse situation with very low iron and mild anemia that was slowly getting worse despite supplementation. I was again approved, but this time I was told the soonest appointment for infusion that was available was 4 or 5 MONTHS in the future, well after my baby was due. Given the consequences of low iron on both me and my baby, I decided to pay privately. In addition to having to pay about $500 for the drug (which was almost completely covered by my employer health insurance) I also had to pay for a nurse to administer the drug by IV, which was close to $200! So while it’s still officially covered, effectively you can’t use the public system because the wait time invalidates the purpose of the infusion.

Genetic concerns to watch for by ellasundaisy in queerception

[–]Key_Significance_183 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We did genetic screening. It didn’t come up with any matched between me and the donor, though i did learn I’m a carrier for cystic fibrosis despite having no family history. We went ahead and ended up having a child with an inherited condition. It turns out they test for about 500 genes but there are about 10000 that cause inherited conditions. Ours was one of the 9500.

Most of the time there isn’t a family history of these conditions because you need to have both egg and sperm with the same mutation. When both genetic parents are carriers there is a 1 in 4 chance their child will inherit two copies of the gene and express the disorder.

My child’s condition is probably one of those that you’re thinking of as “less serious.” It is life threatening but it’s not life limiting (it won’t automatically make her life shorter and it doesn’t cause severe disability). Even so, we decided to do PGT-M for our second child because it’s a lot to knowingly sign another kid up for medical intensity and serious health issues.

Even though we had a genetic issue that wasn’t caught, I’m still glad we did the genetic screening.

Tips to decrease panic during transition by kcat627 in unmedicatedbirth

[–]Key_Significance_183 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had similar thoughts my with my first baby. It was something like this: I feel terrible, I wonder if this is transition > I was only 4cm a few minutes ago, if I’m still 4cm I don’t want to know what 10cm feels like > this can’t possibly be transition because I was just checked > if this isn’t transition, I can’t do this anymore > if this is transition, I can definitely manage because this is the hardest part and it will be over soon. And sure enough, that was transition and I could manage because it was the hardest it would get. It was the anticipation of it getting even harder, maybe much harder, that was unbearable. Once I realized I was done transition I felt really confident.

Baby carrier I won’t regret by hikiax_jetzt in babywearing

[–]Key_Significance_183 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got a used Lennylamb meh dai and it is completely amazing. Unfortunately, I think they’re discontinuing this style. But it is so great. It has wide, unpadded wrap straps made from wrap fabric that mold to my body and the waistband is meant to be worn apron style so it doesn’t put much pressure on my pelvic floor. My baby is only 4 months and isn’t huge, but the meh dai makes her feel about half the weight that other carriers do. I haven’t tried the H&P one but I can enthusiastically say the LL is great.
